Executive Summary

Introduction Dell Inc. (Dell) commissioned its System Performance Analysis team to compare similar 4-socket servers, the

Dell PowerEdge R815 and the HP ProLiant DL585 G7, using the industry-standard SPECpower_ssj2008

benchmark to compare the performance, power draw, and performance/watt using the latest AMD Opteron

6000 series processors. First, the servers were compared in an apples-to-apples manner, configured as

similarly as possible with four 12-core AMD Opteron Model 6176 processors, and identical memory and hard

drive selections. Then, differences between the platforms were examined by changing one parameter at a

time and re-measuring power efficiency. To ensure the lowest power draw, the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 was

equipped with its more expensive High Efficiency power supplies for all tests.

The results showed the Dell PowerEdge R815 costs less and consumed less power in all tested

configurations, while consuming half the rack space, and delivering better raw performance in all

comparisons when both systems used AMD Opteron Model 6176 processors.

Key Findings Key findings from the study for power and performance are summarized below.

Performance/Watt

The Dell PowerEdge R815 achieved a higher performance to power ratio across all load levels than

the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 in all tested configurations.

Performance

Despite drawing less power, Dell PowerEdge R815 provided higher raw performance than the HP

ProLiant DL585 G7 in all comparisons using AMD Opteron Model 6176 processors.

The Dell PowerEdge R815 delivered this higher raw performance and greater power efficiency in just

2U of rack space, half the rack footprint of the 4U consumed by the HP ProLiant DL585 G7.

Power

In the apples-to-apples base configuration, the Dell PowerEdge R815 consumed 4% less power at 100%

target load and 14% less power at idle, resulting in a 11% performance/watt advantage (Figure 1).

With both servers configured with two power supplies, the minimum requirement for 1+1 redundancy

on both platforms, the Dell PowerEdge R815 had a 7% performance/watt advantage (Figure 6).

Since both systems were 1+1 power supply-redundant in all tested configurations, the third and fourth

power supplies on the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 add minimal additional redundancy, while causing it to

have 11% lower performance/watt ratio, consume 7% more power at 100% utilization, and consume

19% more power at idle, compared to the Dell PowerEdge R815 (Figure 7).

The AMD Opteron Model 6180SE processors, available on the HP ProLiant DL585 G7, increased its raw

performance by only 6%, while drawing 22% more power at 100% load, thus causing its

performance/watt ratio to be 10% lower than the Dell PowerEdge R815 with AMD Opteron Model 6176

processors (Figure 8).

6

Price

Even with its greater power efficiency, the Dell PowerEdge R815 costs 2% to 13% less than the HP

ProLiant DL585 G7 in the tested configurations.

The Dell PowerEdge R815 had a 9% to 20% advantage in the ratio of dollars per performance per

watt.

Rack Density

The Dell PowerEdge R815 provides 114% to 123% greater rack density due to its greater power

efficiency and smaller (2U) rack footprint.

Test methodology and detailed results are documented in this paper.

Methodology SPECpower_ssj2008 is an industry standard benchmark created by the Standard Performance Evaluation

Corporation (SPEC) to measure a server’s power and performance across multiple utilization levels. Appendix A

details the test methodology used by Dell, Appendices B and C provide detailed configurations for the tests,

and Appendix D provides detailed report data that supports the results in this paper.

Comparison 1: Apples-to-Apples Configuration (1 PSU) In order to establish a baseline comparison between the two systems, they were configured as similarly as

possible, with identical processor, hard drive, and memory configurations. Both systems were equipped with a

single power supply unit (PSU), and storage controllers were also matched as closely as possible between the

two systems. The HP ProLiant DL585 G7 was equipped with its more expensive High Efficiency PSUs for all

comparisons.

The configuration used in Comparison 1 is summarized in Table 1. This base configuration is maintained

through Comparisons 2 through 4 except as specifically noted in the Comparison description.

Table 1: Detailed Configuration for Comparison 1

In order to maximize both systems’ power efficiency, each was equipped with Low Voltage Registered DIMMs

(LV RDIMMs) for all tests. While the PowerEdge R815 supports dual-ranked 4GB LV RDIMMs, the ProLiant DL585

G7 only supports single-ranked 4GB LV RDIMMs2, which led to the R815’s higher raw performance in all tests

even when both systems used identical AMD Opteron 6176 processors.

Comparison 3: Maximum PSU Configuration The HP ProLiant DL585 G7’s ability to accommodate a third and fourth power supply could be seen as an

advantage for that platform at first glance. However, in all tested configurations, two power supplies were

sufficient for 1+1 redundancy on both systems, so the third and fourth power supplies provide additional

redundancy only in the unlikely event of two power supplies failing at once.

And, as Figure 7 shows, the HP ProLiant DL585 G7’s power efficiency is significantly hurt when the third and

fourth power supplies are installed.

Figure 7: Comparison 3 - SPECpower_ssj2008 Results: Maximum PSU Configuration

With the third and fourth power supplies installed, the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 consumes 7% more power than

the Dell PowerEdge R815 at 100% load, and 19% more power at idle. As a result, HP’s solution scores 11% lower

Comparison 4: DL585 G7 Support for 6180SE Processors A potential differentiator for the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 is its ability to accommodate four AMD Opteron 6180SE

processors. However, as Figure 8 shows, the minimal (5%) raw performance advantage in this configuration is

more than offset by the 22% higher power draw compared to the Dell R815.

For this comparison, both servers were configured as similarly as possible, as in Comparison 1, with the

Summary The results of the SPECpower_ssj2008 testing show the Dell PowerEdge R815’s support for 4GB dual-ranked LV

RDIMMs gave it a 1% to 2% advantage in raw performance in Comparisons 1 through 3, and also illustrate a 7% to

12% advantage for the PowerEdge R815 in greater power efficiency. The Dell solution won on

performance/watt in all tested configurations. While the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 supports installing four power

supplies and the 6180SE processor, testing showed that installing these options actually caused a drop in that

server’s performance/watt ratio in the tested configurations.

The Dell solution also cost 2% to 12% less in the tested configurations, and had a 9% to 20% advantage in dollars

/ performance / watt ratio. Its 2U form factor gave it 114% to 123% greater power efficiency per U of rack

space.

As energy costs rise and data center rack space grows increasingly valuable, the greater performance, smaller

rack footprint, and higher performance/watt ratio of the Dell PowerEdge R815 make it a compelling solution

compared to the HP server.

Appendix A—Test Methodology

SPECpower_ssj2008 Standard SPECpower_ssj2008 is an industry standard benchmark created by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (SPEC) to measure a server’s power and performance across multiple utilization levels. SPECpower_ssj2008 consists of a Server Side Java (SSJ) workload along with data collection and control services. SPECpower_ssj2008 results portray the server’s performance in ssj_ops (server side Java operations per second) divided by the power used in watts (ssj_ops/watt). SPEC created SPEcpower_ssj2008 for those who want to accurately measure the power consumption of their server in relation to the performance that the server is capable of achieving with ssj2008 workload. SPECpower_ssj2008 consists of three main software components:

Server Side Java (SSJ) Workload—Java database that stresses the processors, caches and memory of the system, as well as software elements such as OS elements and the Java implementation chosen

to run the benchmark.

Power and Temperature Daemon (PTDaemon)—Program that controls and reports the power analyzer and temperature sensor data.

Control and Collect System (CCS)—Java program that coordinates the collection of all the data. For more information on how SPECpower_ssj008 works, see http://www.spec.org/power_ssj2008/. All results discussed in this whitepaper are from “compliant runs” in SPEC terminology, which means that although they have not been submitted to SPEC for review, Dell is allowed to disclose them for the purpose of this study. All configuration details required to reproduce these results are listed in Appendices A, B, and C and all result files from the runs compared are included in Appendix D. Both servers were configured by installing a fresh copy of Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008 Enterprise R2 (Service Pack 1) with the operating system installed on a two-hard drive RAID 1 (in the case of the Dell PowerEdge R815) or RAID 1 + 0 (in the case of the HP ProLiant DL585 G7) choosing the “full installation” option for each. The latest driver and firmware update packages available to both servers were installed at the beginning of this study. Refer to Appendix B for details. The Dell System Performance Analysis Team ran SPECpower_ssj2008 ten times per configuration across both

servers and chose the run with the highest overall ssj_ops/watt for each configuration to compare.

BIOS Settings BIOS settings differed between the two manufacturers, so we tuned for best-known SPECpower_ssj2008

performance results. To improve power efficiency, we changed the memory speed of both systems to 1066MHz

from the default of 1333MHz, and changed their HyperTransport frequency to HT1. Virtualization was not used

in these tests so AMD Virtualization support was disabled on both servers.

For the Dell PowerEdge R815 the following settings were used:

DRAM Prefetcher Disabled

Hardware Prefetch Training on Software Prefetch Disabled

Hardware Prefetcher Disabled

HT mode set to HT1

Memory Speed set to 1066MHz in BIOS

AMD Virtualization was disabled (default)

Page 25: Power Efficiency Comparison of the Dell™ PowerEdge™ R815 ...i.dell.com/.../Dell-2u-R815-versus-HP-4u-DL585.pdf · Power Efficiency Comparison of the Dell PowerEdge R815 and HP

Power Efficiency Comparison of the Dell PowerEdge R815 and HP ProLiant DL585 G7 Rack Servers

25

For the HP ProLiant DL585 G7 the following settings were used:

Wake-on LAN was disabled

Dynamic Power Savings Mode Response set to Slow

HT mode set to HT1

Memory Speed set to 1066MHz in BIOS

AMD Virtualization was disabled

The HP ProLiant DL585 G7 did not provide the option to disable any hardware prefetchers in its ROM-

Based Setup Utility (RBSU).

OS Tuning To improve Java performance, large pages were enabled by entering Control Panel->Administrative Tools-

>Local Security Policy->Local Policies->User Rights Assignment->Lock Pages in Memory. An option was

changed to add Administrator.

Operating System Power Management mode for all solutions was changed left at Balanced (the default) and

Balanced mode was edited to turn off the Hard Drive after 1 minute.

We configured both servers with a separate IP address on the same subnet as our SPECpower_ssj2008 controller

system where the Director, CCS, and PTDaemon components were located, and connected both servers directly

to the controller system through NIC 1 for their respective runs.

SPECpower_ssj2008 Configuration IBM J9 Java Virtual Machine (JVM)8 was used for both solutions, as this JVM provided the best performance for

SPECpower_ssj2008 of any of the available choices at the time that this study was undertaken.

The following JVM options were used on both servers, as they are the best-known JVM tunings for

SPECpower_ssj2008 for the IBM J9 JVM when running with larger memory configurations:

-Xms1875m -Xmx1875m -Xmn1400m -Xaggressive -Xcompressedrefs -Xgcpolicy:gencon -

XlockReservation -Xnloa -XtlhPrefetch -Xlp

The following bindings were used to ensure that each of the eight JVMs ran on six logical processors:

start /affinity [3F,FC0,3F000,FC0000,3F000000,FC0000000,3F000000000,FC0000000000]

Power Meter Configuration

We used the Yokogawa WT210 Digital Power Meter for the actual power measurement of the servers, as this is

the most commonly used analyzer for SPECpower_ssj2008 publications at the time that this study was

undertaken.
