Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS)Completed in 2008, the Phase One of the DTSS comprises a 48 km deep sewer tunnel which runs from Kranji to Changi, over 60 km of link sewers, two 5 km deep sea outfall pipes and the centralized Changi Water Reclamation Plant (CWRP).

Phase Two of the DTSS is envisaged to be developed before 2030.

Changi Water Reclamation PlantAt the heart of the DTSS is the CWRP, a state-of-the-art plant capable of treating 800,000 m3 (176 million gallons or 320 Olympic size pools) of used water a day.

The plant was officially opened by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as one of the highlights of Singapore International Water Week in 2009.

CWRP sits on a site area of only 32 hectares, one-third the size of a conventional plant. Together with the deep tunnel, Phase One of DTSS replaces three of the six reclamationplants and accompanying pumping stations, freeing up to 135 ha land for other developments.

Some key features of the CWRP include a deep pumping station, a sludge dryer and a covered plant with odor control.

The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) is a visionary project by PUB, Singa-pore’s national water agency. Designed to be cost-effective and efficient, DTSS can meet the city-state’s long-term needs in used water collection, treatment, reclamation and disposal for the next 100 years. At the heart of this mammoth system is the Changi Water Reclamation Plant, a state-of-the-art compact and covered used water facility.

Last year PT. Perusahaan Listrik Negara or PLN (State-run power company) decided that 100 tourism resort islands should be powered by solar power. This program was later extended to include 1,000 islands in Indonesia which will be powered by solar power by 2014. To support this development, ABB hosted a forum to cover all technical aspects of solar power.

ABB’s Discrete Automation and Motion division recently hosted a solar power customer forum in Makassar. The forum was dedicated for stakeholders within solar power plants to display project references, products and solutions offered. The event was opened by Ir. Nyoman S. Astawa, MBA, General Manager of PLN for East Kalimantan. He was accompanied by Purnomo, Power Plants Manager of PLN for East Kalimantan. In Nyoman S. Astawa’s introduction, he described the current and potential solar power plants (PLTS) projects for 1000 Indonesian islands. For East Kalimantan, there are two PLTS, located in Sebatik island 340 kWp and Derawan island 170 kWp.

Solar power expected to boost local economic growthThe shift to PLTS in some areas of East Indonesia has allowed more access to light for the people in these areas. It has also helped hasten the increase of electrification ratio and at the same time reduce the dependency of fuel. These positive impacts are expected to boost the economic growth especially for the local people.

ABB committed to upscale solar power in IndonesiaThis specific customer forum showcased a close collaboration between ABB’s different divisions (Discrete Automotion and Motion and Low Voltage Products). Within ABB there were also a strong regional presence at the forum; Kevin Dang (Regional Sales Manager for Power

Electronics), Jari Sarkinen (Regional Sales Manager for Solar Inverters), Chooi Ean Hoong (Regional Technical Support Manager for Automation), and Joshi Raghavendra (Sales Manager for Renewable Business). By their presence, ABB wanted to show its support to the development of the solar power business industry in Indonesia.

Jefri Pardede, ABB’s Manager for Power Electronics and Manager for ABB’s strategic initiatives of power business, started the presentation with an introduction to ABB’s solutions for solar power plants. Joshi Raghavendra continued the session with presentation of Microgrids & Renewable Integration.

Great interest in solar power solutionsA large audience attended the forum including participants from PLN as well as end users, and system integrators. The audience was not only locals from east Indonesia but also attending from PLN Sulselrabar (South, south east and west Sulawesi), and East Kalimantan, as well as also there were guests coming from Bandung, West Java.

Storing solar powerFerdinand Sibarani, Sales Engineer of Power Electronics in ABB Indonesia led an interactive session on Energy Storage

System (ESS). He guided the audience to topics such as the basic understanding and characteristics of solar power, how users can store and utilize excess power from solar (during day time), to be used at any time, whenever required. All challenges, solutions, function, benefit and types were presented.

The audience showed a high interest in the advanced redundancy feature that ABB’s Energy Storage System Converter PCS100 ESS has. They went through a comparison of ABB PCS100 ECC with Modular ESS without redundancy and the traditional ESS available in market.

The session continued with Jari Sarkinen describing solar inverters portfolio which covers central inverter PVS800 power ratings from 100 to 630 kW and string inverter PVS300 power ratings from 3.3 to 8 kW. Chooi Ean Hoong continued with PLC AC500 in solar applications for solar tracking solutions, generator control, ESS interface, solar inverter monitoring, remote monitoring and data logging.

Energy measurement and management

CIRCUTOR solutions for the ISO 50001 standard

Measuring equipment Once the necessary measuring points have been defined, the equipment is chosen according to the needs of each area. Notable features of the equipment include:

CVM power analyzers. Equipment with the capacity to measure energy, power and electric variables such as voltages, currents, harmonics, etc. EDMK, MKD, EMS energy meters. Measurement equipment to measure active and reactive energy. LM impulse centralisers. Variable integration equipment for electric, thermal, mechanical and other energy types. EDS energy telemanagers. Concentrators of energy consumption and variables designed for companies with distributed branches.

Measurement diagram The purpose of the measurement diagram depends on the type of installation that is the aim of the standard, basically consisting of two types:

Energy management system for a local management plant, where the aim is the division of the plant into areas and then into energy uses. Examples are industries, office buildings, malls, health centres, etc.

Energy management system for remote centres. Energy telemanagement. In this case, the main consumption uses of a remote centre is measured and the information is automatically sent to the central control centre. Examples are company dealers, store chains, bank branches, network of primary health care centres, etc.
