2010 PRESEASON NFL LATE PHONE PLAYS OPEN 2-1 67%!!!! We are writing this Issue early so as of presstime we can let you know that we have finished Week 1 of the Preseason with an impressive 2-1 67% mark on our Late Phone Plays. Updates on the preseason can be found on our comp lines daily. As many of you are aware Northcoast Sports does not release a Late Phone Play on every single game being played. In fact, on any given Saturday with 40-50 games to choose from, usually there are between 5-7 H rated Late Phone Selections released. Isolated games such as the games now being played on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday and Friday Nights are generally released not as a Late Phone Selection, but as a Marquee Play on Northcoast's Private Play Hotline (for just $15 each play). The Private Play Hotline Marquee Plays are updated on game day and are available at 1-900-438-9467 for $15 or online at www.ncsports.com or on the NC Debit Card system for $9. night game but does have a huge game vs Miami Fla on deck. Marshall also has a big game on deck vs in-state rival WV, new HC Doc Holliday’s alma mater. The Buckeyes also fall into the Bonus System on page 2. IOWA ST 30 N Illinois 27 - Iowa St caught a lot of good fortune LY and not only made it to a bowl, but beat Minny and that gives them added confidence for 2010. They have 11 ret starters and are now in the 2nd year for HC Rhoads. N Illinois is a dangerous team with 15 ret starters and keeps getting more athletic in coach Kill’s 3rd year. Iowa St does have a strong offense with 7 starters back including QB Arnaud and RB Robinson and they rate the edge on offense (#44-81). NI has the much more veteran D and LY allowed just 330 ypg while Iowa St allowed 416. NI has the defensive edge (#61-99). Iowa St rates the home and ST’s (#31-94) edges. Rhoads is 3-0 ATS as a HF but they do have rival Iowa next week. Kill is 5-2 as an AD upsetting Purdue and almost upsetting Minny, Wisky and Tenn. UTAH 30 Pittsburgh 27 -The Utes are 15-4 SU but 9-10 ATS in home openers S/’91 (0-3 ATS run). Utah is 19-7 SU since 2001 vs BCS teams. Utah beat Pitt 35-7 (-15) in the ‘04 Fiesta Bowl (only meeting). Pitt is #107 in terms of exp heading into ‘10. While Utah has just 4 starters back on D, 3 are up front and they should improve upon LY’s 3.7 ypc rush allowed as they take on Pitt’s solid rush attack led by Dion Lewis. Both teams have a pair of solid RB’s but Pitt has a first time starting QB and a young O-line making its first road start at night, in altitude, facing a sold out crowd. Usc 34 HAWAII 13 - Let’s see how Lane Kiffin handles openers. In 2005 Pete Carroll travelled out here as a 36 pt favorite and left the islands with a 63-17 win. UH is 0-6 vs USC and in the L/3 games (‘99, ‘03 and ‘05) has allowed 60+ points in each (avg score 62-19). The Trojans are 12-1 SU and 11-2 ATS in their 1st road game and have won the last 5 season openers by a 52-10 avg. USC is 3-9 ATS as an AF but after a “poor” 9-4 season and the massive NCAA pen-alties, USC has an “us against the world” attitude and will try to regain some swagger here. MIDDLE TENN 34 vs Minnesota 27 - First meeting. The last time Minny traveled to face a Sun Belt team we used our famous FREE Sept 5H on Florida Atlantic as they were a 7 pt HD and well motivated and they knocked the Gophers off at home. Minny finished that year 1-11 and Fla Atl went to a bowl showing why we used the matchup. This is a similar situation as MT is the best team in the SBC and Minny with just 2 ret st’rs on defense looks to be in a rebuilding year. Minny does have a veteran offense led by QB Weber and 8 other starters back and they have been to a bowl in each of the last two years. These teams are close talent-wise but we give a slight edge to the well motivated HT and they should be the 2nd ever Sun Belt team to knock off a Big Ten foe. UAB 30 Florida Atl 20 - The Blazers exploded for season highs in pts (56), rush yds (330) and total yds (622) in LY’s home win. The HT is 2-0 SU and ATS outgaining the visitor in each by 127 ypg. UAB is 12-2 SU (3-4 ATS) S/’96 in home openers. UAB loses the key player on their team in QB Joe Webb but with 16 ret starters has their deepest most exp team in HC Callaway’s 4 years. Schnellenberger usually picks his spots in non-conf games and this one falls into the winnable category and he has a veteran QB in Jeff Van Camp and a 1,000 yd rusher in Alfred Morris. Their big question is the O-line which lost all 5 starters and now takes on a veteran UAB front 7 on the road. Callaway is 3-1 as a HF and FAU is 6-17-1 as an AD.

FRIDAY, September 3rdArizona vs TOLEDO - AZ had 28-12 FD and 452-244 yd edges in their 41-16 home victory over UT in ‘08. UA is 5-0 all-time vs current MAC teams but has lost 8 straight road openers (1-7 ATS). Since 2001, UT has hosted 6 BCS schools going 5-1 SU (only loss to Purdue in ‘07). They beat Colorado 54-38 LY and own wins over Pitt, Kansas, Iowa St, Minnesota and Purdue in ‘97. UT is 14-4 SU and 8-3-1 ATS since 1992 in Glass Bowl openers. Arizona only has The Citadel on deck. Toledo has 11 ret starters but HC Beckman is now in his 2nd year and the Rockets are 10-3 as a HD. Arizona rates large edges in all 3 areas with the most significant being ST’s (#9-105) and defense (#33-111). Get the Friday Night winner on the Private Play Hotline for just $9 using the Northcoast Debit Card system. Call on Friday, Sept 3rd after 3:00 pm ET.SATURDAY, September 4thMICHIGAN ST 34 W Michigan 17 - LY the Spartans dominated the Broncos (35-0 at HT) with season highs in pts, FD’s and yds. Michigan St has won 11 straight home openers by 23 ppg covering 4 of the L/5. WM meanwhile has lost 15 straight road openers by an avg of 24 ppg (0-4 ATS run). The Spartans were just 6-7 LY after losing their bowl but have a much more exp’d backfield. Western is our pick to win the MAC West TY as they have a much more veteran D. They did upset Illinois in ‘08 and Iowa in ‘07 with both of those wins keeping the Big Ten schools from a bowl at the end of the year. Mich St lost to CM LY in week 2 and with only Fla Atl on deck will be fully focused. WM is on a 2-7 ATS run as an AD. WM does lose longtime QB Hiller and their first time starting QB may not be able to exploit a Spartan secondary that allowed a 32-6 ratio LY (#103 pass D).

KEY SELECTIONS4H OKLAHOMA over Utah St - The Sooners are our pick to win the National Title this year and even with Florida St on deck they are off an 8-5 season and will look for a con-fidence booster. Their offense avg 51.1 ppg in ‘08 and LY’s inj plagued bunch dropped to 31.1 ppg. This year with 8 starters back incl QB Landry they figure to be more like ‘08. Last year Utah St had the two headed monster of QB Borel and RB Turbin. Turbin and top return-ing WR Morrison are injured so the Sooners D should be able to neutralize Borel. Utah St has 8 starters back on D but we rate OU’s D #4 and Utah St’s #102. The Sooners (-45’) defeated the Aggies 54-3 in the last meeting in ‘07 in Norman as OU racked up 617-153 yd and 24-8 FD edges despite USU holding a 31:39-28:21 TOP advantage. OU is 4-0 vs Utah St with their avg win by 58-7. LY, in their injury plagued season, OU went 1-2 as a 20+ pt HF but they are not afraid to run up the score as they went 6-1 prior with an avg score of 57-15. In their two reg season non-conf wins LY the Sooners won by a combined 109-0 including a shutout of explosive Tulsa. FORECAST: OKLAHOMA 48 Utah St 33H Tcu over Oregon St † - This game will be played in the new Dallas Cowboys Sta-dium. The Beavers struggle on the road in Sept as they are 1-10 ATS with their avg loss the last 6 (0-6 ATS) by 18 ppg ATS. TCU will not only have a large crowd edge at this “neutral” site game in Texas but will be excited to make a statement vs a team that was one play away from being in the Rose Bowl LY while only having Tenn Tech on deck. TCU has our #11 off and #10 D while OSU checks in at #37 and #28. TCU is 18-6 as a HF and you can lay the lumber with Patterson in statement games. Here are some angles making TCU our first Technical Play of the Week. TCU is 15-5 ATS as a fav and have gone 6-3 ATS vs BCS foes. The Frogs have also covered 5 straight season openers 4 of which were BCS teams. Meanwhile Oregon St has gone 0-5 ATS in their first game away from home losing by an avg score of 44-15. The Beavers have also failed to cover 9 straight Sept games away from home. FORECAST: Tcu 37 Oregon St 163H MICHIGAN over Connecticut - 1st meeting. This is the “dedication” of Michigan Sta-dium after a $226 million refurbishment. Conn is 2-0 vs Big Ten with both wins over Indiana. UM HC Rodriguez was 4-0 SU and ATS vs Conn with WV. Michigan is 13-3 SU but 5-10 ATS in home openers. Connecticut is 7-3 ATS in road openers (4 straight SU). Including LY’s bowl, the Huskies were a perfect 6-0 ATS as an AD w/3 outright upsets. Conn returns 16 st’rs from the team that dominated SC in the bowl while Mich returns 15 from a 5-7 team. UM is in the 3rd year of Rich Rod’s schemes and LY opened the year 5-2. We rate the defenses even but UM has the edge on offense and ST’s. Conn is a dangerous dog but the Wolves are the stronger team and well motivated and grab the home win. FORECAST: MICHIGAN 37 Connecticut 24

OTHER SELECTIONS2H FRESNO ST over Cincinnati - LY FSU outgained (443-357) and outFD’d (25-15) Cincy in a 28-20 loss (+17). UC is 4-1 ATS in trips to the far west. FS is 10-1 in home open-ers incl 3-1 vs BCS tms. Pat Hill loves statement games and here he takes on the defending Big East champ which has a new HC and just 12 ret starters. Both teams have explosive offenses and Cincy only has Ind St on deck while Fresno has a bye so it is a big opener for both. It won’t be hard for Hill to motivate the team and fans facing only their 4th BCS team at home in the last 7 years especially one that was 12-0 and ranked #4 going into LY’s Sugar Bowl. The Bearcats are the stronger team overall but Fresno has the coaching continuity and LY outFD’d Boise, Cincy and Wisky (all 3 finished the season ranked) and get the W at home. FORECAST: FRESNO ST 38 Cincinnati 312H TROY over Bowling Green - Two of the least exp’d teams in the NCAA battle here as Troy has just 9 ret st’rs and BG just 8. LY Troy had a veteran team taking on a BG squad with a new HC in the opener on the road. Troy jumped out to a 14-0 lead but then checked out for the rest of the game and BG got the home upset, 31-14 (+7). Troy is playing with legitimate revenge and has more talent on the defensive side. BG’s offense revolved around QB Sheehan who is gone so their young QB makes his first road start a long way from home in the heat and humidity of the South. BG has won 7 in a row as an AD (4 outright) but was a Sr/Fr team in ‘09 that is very inexp in ‘10. Troy was 5-0 ATS at home LY winning by an avg of 21 ppg and +201 ypg and starts their season off on a solid note. Troy is our inaugural Revenge Play of the Week. In LY’s season opener Troy was a 7 pt fav at BG and jumped out to a 14-0 lead. The Trojans then allowed 31 unanswered points. Now at home again in a season opener their will be no letdown with HC Blakeney reminding his players of the loss. Troy has now covered 7 straight as a HF & has won & covered EVERY home opener since becoming a DI in 2002. FORECAST: TROY 38 Bowling Green 172H NEBRASKA 52 Wku 3 - The Cornhuskers are 16-0 SU and 10-4 ATS in home openers since 1994. Last year the Huskers swept the Sun Belt part of their schedule beating FAU, Ark St and UL by an avg of 47-4 (3-0 ATS) and they only have Idaho on deck TY. The Husk-ers are a legitimate Top 10 team and have our #5 rated D while WK comes in at #119 on that side. WK is a stronger team this year with 18 ret starters but LY in their 2 games vs a BCS foes they were walloped by Tennessee (63-7) and USF (35-13). We used the Huskers LY in all 3 vs SBC teams and see no reason to jump off them especially now that they have a much improved offense. Check out the Bonus System on page 2 and of those teams that won and covered LY’s bowl, they are now 12-2 ATS as a favorite of 24+ points. FORECAST: NEBRASKA 52 Wku 3

OTHER GAMESTHURSDAY, September 2ndSOUTH CAROLINA 33 Southern Miss 16 - This game was arranged by ESPN for national telecast on the opening Thurs of the college season. SC has opened the ESPN Thurs night season in 4 of Spurrier’s 5 years here. SC is 6-2 SU on Thurs under Spurrier (4 of those wins were season openers). This is the first meeting between SC and Southern Miss. SC has won 10 straight openers. SM is a prime contender in CUSA and has both QB Davis and WR Brown back at 100% health and always has a tough D. Spurrier is 10-7 ATS as a HF and Fedora 4-2 ATS as an AD. SM only has a IAA foe on deck while SC plays Georgia. OHIO STATE 38 Marshall 7- These two last met in 2004 and Ohio St needed a last second 55 yard FG to pull out a 24-21 win. OSU should be excited for a rare Thursday

PAST HISTORY MATCHUPS2009’s MEETINGS

UAB (-6’) 56 Florida Atlantic 29 - The story of this game was that FA QB Smith was inj’d and out for the year. Also, UAB’s offense was unstoppable. MSU 30-219-383-0 WM 11-94-117-1† Missouri (+6’) 37 Illinois 9 - Edward Jones Dome in St Louis. IL lost WR Benn on the first se-ries (inj) and was w/o their top RB for the game and #2 RB for the 2H but MO dominated and Gab-bert in his first start hit 25-33-319 outplaying Juice Williams (18-28-179). After an IL punt, MO went 79/14pl for a 32 yd FG. Surprisingly MO took its 2nd poss 75/6pl with a 49 yd TD pass, 10-0. IL went 67/9pl but settled for a 24 yd FG, 10-3 (13:40 2Q). After a 16 yd IR, Mizz started at the IL26 and got a 44 yd FG on a 0 yd drive, 13-3. IL went 51/10pl and on 4th & 1 Williams tripped over his own feet (4:21). MO took advantage again. CU’s 2nd poss ended on an int and 11 yd ret and face mask brought it out to the 50. CSU went 50/10pl for a TD, 14-0 end of 1Q. CSU got a 43 yd pass as part of a 52/6pl drive for a 29 yd FG. CSU was int on a deep pass (like punt) at the CU40 and the Buffs after getting a FD at the 28 nailed a 54 yd FG, 17-3 (2:50 2Q). CSU after a pers foul FD got a 26 yd run and nailed a 45 yd FG with :05 left and had a 265-63 yd edge at the half. UL went 79/9pl for a TD. After a KO went out of the EZ but offsides forced a re-kick, UK’s Locke got a 100 yd KR for a TD, 10-7. Two poss later UL went 52/12pl but was SOD at the UK15. UK went 85/10pl for a TD, 17-7. UK got to the UL5 but the clock ran out. After a 65 yd KR to open the 3Q, UL got a 23 yd FG. After a fmbl, UL went 33/5pl but had a 28 yd FG bounce off the upright. OTHER COLLEGE GAMES CONT FROM PAGE 3FLORIDA 55 Miami, Oh 6 - The first game of the post-Tebow era. This is just the 2nd meeting between these 2 teams and Miami won the last meeting 16-7 in the 1973 Tangerine Bowl. UF is 8-0 SU (3-5 ATS) vs MAC teams since ‘90 winning by an avg of 52-12. UF is 17-3 ATS vs FBS non-conf foes under Meyer. Florida has won their last 12 openers by 39 ppg and is 6-1 ATS in them. They do have USF and Tenn on deck but beat bowl bound Troy 56-6 LY in a similar spot. Miami was just 1-11 LY but is a much stronger team with 19 ret st’rs. They did have a respectable #58 pass D and UF will be more of a pass oriented team TY with Brantley at the controls. Natu-rally, this is a Top Ten team vs perhaps a bottom ten team, so UF can name the score and Meyer is known to put the hammer down and may want to give his young QB some confidence.† Missouri 34 - Illinois 20 - St Louis. This is the last scheduled game of the Braggin’ Rights rivalry. The Illini are 2-7 SU and 1-8 ATS vs the Tigers including 0-5 SU/ATS in St Louis. In ‘09 Tigers QB Gab-bert threw for 319 yd and 3 TD in his first start as an inexp Missouri team thrashed the exp’d Illini 37-9. LY Missouri had 9 ret st’rs LY and some major stars to replace but TY has 16 ret st’rs including Gab-bert and they only have McNeese St on deck. Illinois has just 12 ret st’rs and a new QB. The Tigers are the stronger team in all 3 areas and have dominated the series. We think that will continue. † Colorado 27 Colorado St 17 - Last year the game was played in Boulder but for the next 10 years it will be played at Invesco Field in Denver. Colo St upset the Buffs LY but has not won 2 in a row in the series since 2000. The dog is 14-6 ATS in the series. The Buffs are 1-4 ATS as a favorite over 2 years but CSU HC Fairchild is just 1-6 ATS as an AD. CU has 17 ret starters and HC Hawkins is on the hottest of seats at CU. Colo St only has 11 ret starters and must break in a new QB. We rate CU #52 on off and #45 on D while CSU is only #108 and #68 and Hawkins (-11) did defeat Fairchild at this site 38-17 in the ‘08 opener. Northwestern 31 VANDERBILT 23 - Last met in ‘52. NW is 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS on the non-conf road and Vandy is 4-0 ATS in season openers. Vandy is 0-5 ATS as a HD and has just 11 ret start-ers and lost HC Johnson abruptly in July. NW is 0-3 as an AF in 3 yrs but is off a bowl, only has Illinois St on deck and has 13 ret starters. They do have a 1st time starting QB making his first start in SEC country and Vandy usually has more rabid fans at the start of the year when hopes are high. HC Fitzgerald is now in his 5th ssn and after first teaching his kids to learn and expect to win, he’s taken it to the next level as NW is 7-3 SU away L2Y and have covered 8 of 9 AG. MISSISSIPPI ST 34 Memphis 17- Memphis has lost 4 in a row ATS and 10 in a row SU in this series (last met ‘03). MSU is 0-7 ATS as a HF in the last 5 years and they have a key Thursday game vs Auburn on deck. The Bulldogs do have 14 returning st’rs and are off a pair of losing seasons so they can not take any game for granted. Memphis has a new QB making his first start in SEC country with cowbells, but UM figures to get better play out of that position this year. Memphis is 2-6 as an AD and lost by 18 ppg on the road LY but has a new HC. † TEXAS 41 Rice 10 - Reliant Stadium. While this is technically a Rice home game the crowd will be almost all Burnt Orange and that gives us some line value here in this battle between 2 former SWC foes. The Owls are 1-5 ATS vs the Longhorns since 2003, losing by an avg score of 49-10, including a 52-10 win by the #7 Longhorns in 2008. UT is 12-6 ATS in non-conf play. Rice is a much improved team this year with 17 ret starters after having just 3 starters back on offense in ‘09. They also have some BCS transfers at QB and RB. Texas needs to give their young QB confidence and they only have Wyoming on deck so it is a good spot vs our #96 rated D. Texas has our #1 rated D and Mack Brown has a habit of putting down the hammer in games like this. Rice is 1-5 ATS vs ranked teams with the avg loss by 42.5 ppg.

a TD. Two pl later UL got a 66 yd TD pass, 27-24. UK punted with 5:39 left but Guy fmbl’d the punt on their own 24 and UK had a TD 3pl later. UL got to the UK21 but QB Burke was int’d. UA did get a 98 yd KR TD by Miller, 14-14. This time SU went 40/9pl but missed a 39 yd FG. After a partially blk’d 6 yd punt, SU went 28/4pl for a TD, 21-14 (6:47). UA did get 76 & 53 yd punts but SU drove 59/4pl for a TD with 10:46 left to get ahead of the spread. UA was sk’d and fmbl’d at their own 49 with 3:07 left and SU got a 4th & 2 FD and ran out the clock. SU 20-234-105-2 UA 9-0-191-2Army (+3’) 27 EASTERN MICHIGAN 14 - Army took their opening drive 57/12pl for a TD, 6-0 (xpng). EM was int’d at the Army 11 on a deep pass. EM fmbl’d and Army 2pl later had a TD, 13-0 and that was the score at the half. EM went on a 61/8pl drive but missed a 21 yd FG. Two poss later EM went 52/8pl and on 3rd & 8 got a 20 yd TD pass, 13-7 (13:58). Army answered with a 79/7pl drive for a TD, 21-7. EM got 1 FD & punted (8:51). Army on 3rd & 10 got a 75 yd run by Mealy to the 5 and the TD on the next play to ice it, 27-7 (6:53). EM went 70/9pl for a TD with 3:31 left but Army rec the onside kick. ARMY 11-300-8-1 EM 14-40-183-3 CINCINNATI 28 Fresno St (+17) 20 - FSU had 25-15 FD & 443-357 yd edges. FSU blew a couple of chances in the RZ which cost them. The Bulldogs’ strategy was to keep UC’s offense off the field by running. They ran 57 times for 290 yards. UC went 77/7pl for a quick TD & FSU went 55/11pl but settled for a 36 yd FG. UC went 71/5pl for a TD. Two poss later FSU went 85/12pl for a TD, 14-10 (11:48 2Q). Each went on long TD drives with FSU getting a 21 yd TD pass on 2&gl with :07 left 1H, 21-17. FSU took their opening 3Q drive to the UC36 but after 2 pen’s, punted on 4th & 31. FSU was about to take the lead going 59/14pl but on 4th & 2 Colburn was int’d at the 8 & ret’d to the 29. UC went 71/6pl for a TD, 28-17 (13:09). FSU went 48/10pl but settled for a 49 yd FG, 28-20. UC got 2 FD & punted (3:55). FSU got to the UC38 with 1:50 to go but on 4th & 8 fired inc. UC 15-57-300-0 FSU 25-290-153-1BOWLING GREEN (+7) 31 Troy 14 - Troy went 80/7pl on its opening drive. BG converted on 4&6 to the 25 but was int’d on the next play. BG 89/13pl for a TD with another 4&6 conv, 14-14 (3:49). Troy missed a 36 yd FG then was int’d & ret’d 13 yd. BG went 53/10pl for a 21 yd FG, 17-14. BG went 49/4pl for a TD, 24-14. Troy, on 4&6 was int & ret’d 64 yd for a TD with 2:24 left. BG 21-50-339-1 TROY 17-41-263-2East Carolina (+4’) 44 TULSA 17 - EC had a commanding 401-112 yd edge in the 1H but only led 20-7. EC opened with a 63/10pl drive for a 29 yd FG. EC missed a 48 yd FG. EC fmbl’d at their own 46. OTHER COLLEGE GAMES (cont from pg 4)NOTRE DAME 34 Purdue 20 - The home team is 10-4 SU and has covered the last 2 in this series. The Boilers are 4-1-1 ATS vs non-conf BCS opps on the road. The Irish lead this series 7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS. PU trailed 17-7 LY but took a 4Q lead vs ND before eventually giving up the winning TD w/:25 left. PU has been outgained in 6 of the L/7Y vs ND. The Irish have a new HC and should get the most out of their talent. Purdue is capable as they beat Ohio St and Michigan and almost upset Oregon LY but with just 11 starters back and a new QB and young OL making their first road trip it will be tough.Kentucky 27 LOUISVILLE 24 - LY UK trailed 27-24 late in the 4Q until UL’s Guy fmbl’d a PR and UK rec’d. Three plays later UK WR Cobb grabbed the gm-winning TD with 4:28 left for a 31-27 win. UK RB Locke had 310 all-purp yds and 2 TD’s incl a 100 yd KR. For 10 straight years the team with the most rushing yds has won (UK 168-133 LY). Louisville was 7-1 SU/ATS in the Governors Cup but has lost 3 straight. Last time here UK was outFD’d 16-13 but got 2 FR TD and a 7 yd drive for a TD for a 27-2 win. Both teams have new HC’s but Joker Phillips has been the coach in waiting here so there is not the usual new coach adjustment period but UK has just 11 ret starters. The Cards have good talent and 12 ret st’rs and a new attitude under new HC Strong who faced UK yearly as the DC of Florida. This one looks like a toss-up so go with the more stable coaching staff which had the benefit of bowl practices LY. OREGON 48 New Mexico 6 - The Ducks have gone 8-2 SU/ATS in regular season gms vs non-BCS schools. NM has not won or scored a TD in a season opener S/’05 and has been outscored by an avg of 26-5 the L/3Y. The Lobos went 0-2 SU (1-1 ATS) LY visiting BCS tms losing by 28 ppg. Autzen Stadium is one of the toughest venues in the country and LY 4 of their 7 HG’s were vs ranked teams yet they won by an avg of 21 ppg with a 165 ypg edge (-29 ypg on road). LY NM lost by an avg of 26 ppg in their road games. The Ducks do have a big trip to SEC country on deck. NM has a 1st time starting QB in a hostile environment and vs our #16 rated D. UO is 18-8 as a HF. KANSAS ST 24 Ucla 23 - Last year a young K-St team off an upset loss to Louisiana traveled to the West Coast and lost 23-9 despite a 19-16 FD edge (was outgained 359-268). Kansas St has won their last 20 home openers (9-3-1 ATS) by an avg of 26 ppg. They are similar in terms of ret experience but UCLA has the veteran QB and the defensive edge. Kan St has the top offensive player on the field in RB Thomas and LY was much tougher at home (+108 ypg) than on the road (-89 ypg). UCLA rates as the #44 team in our rankings while Kan St is #67 but K-St has a good sized home edge and this is an unusual trip for the West Coast team. Syracuse 27 AKRON 13 - UA has split their 2 meetings the L/2Y. LY UA had an early 7-0 lead and the gm was tied at 14 after a 98 yd KR TD to open the 2H but the Zips had just 35 yds (1.8 ypp) the rest of the way. This will be the 3rd str meeting (1st in Akron). SU was upset 2Y ago being outgained by 125 yds but LY got revenge holding the Zips to 191 yds.

SU held UA to 0 rush yds (fewest all’d S/‘91). Akron is 4-1 SU/ATS in home openers and 8-4 ATS as a HD. The Orange were short on scholarships after their coaching change LY but are in the 2nd year of Marrone’s schemes and have better depth and 15 ret starters. Akron has a new HC and this looks like a rebuilding year. Syr is 3-23 on the road SU but gets the season started with a win. BYU 33 Washington 30 - In their last meeting in 2008, BYU blocked UW’s 35 yd PAT at the end of regulation to escape with the 1 pt victory. The long PAT came after QB Locker was called for a celebration penalty for throwing the ball into the air after a TD. Including bowls, UW is 17-9 SU and 10-6 ATS vs current MWC members. The Cougars are 5-2 SU at home against Pac-10 teams. BYU is 8-3 ATS in home openers. Washington is 1-5-1 ATS in their 1st away game. The Huskies are 9-18-1 ATS on grass the last 9 years. UW is the 10th most exp tm in the country while BYU is #112. BYU has been in the altitude all month heightening their home field edge and is 22-2 SU at home while UW is 0-5 SU on the road under Sarkisian. OKLAHOMA ST 31 Washington St 17 - They last met in ‘08 with Okla St wining 39-13 on the road (-7). OSU looks like they are in a rebuilding year with just 8 starters back but will need to start off the year on a good note. They are switching to the TT offense and have 2 non-BCS teams on deck. Wash St is by far the strongest version that Wulff has fielded but they had a huge gap to make up between themselves and the rest of the BCS as they were -260 ypg in Pac-10 play LY. If this game was played LY OSU would have been about a 42 pt favorite and while the two teams are a lot closer TY we still give OSU the edge in all 3 areas with the big-gest being ST’s (#44-112) and defense (#57-103) and they are 8-3 ATS as a HF. ALABAMA 45 San Jose St 3 - First meeting. UA is 19-2 SU, 6-10 ATS in season openers and 11-20 ATS as a DD favorite since ‘05. Saban opened up 1-7 as a HF here but is on a 6-3 ATS run. San Jose has lost its last 7 road openers by an avg of 46-10. The Tide has a huge game vs Penn St on deck and with a veteran offense may hold some back. Army 31 E MICHIGAN 18 - EM is 0-3 SU/ATS vs Army all-time (3rd straight yr playing). Last year in the opener EM trailed 13-0 after 3Q’s with just 116 yards as the teams finished w/25 total FD’s. Army is 1-6 ATS in home openers. Army has rushed for 300+ in each of the L/2Y vs EM. EM allowed 6.3 ypc rush LY and while their front 7 is improved, the Cadets will still have success there. Army’s 16 ret starters are unusually high for a service academy and this is not a daunting road trip as EM avg just 5,016 fans LY (#120). Army has been an AF just 7 times since ‘97 and is 0-7 ATS in that role. We feel Army will be in bowl this year for the first time since 1996 which is the last time they covered as an AF.

AUBURN 34 Arkansas St 13 - Auburn is 3-2 ATS vs the SBC winning by an avg of 43-4 and is 11-5 as a fav of 20+ pts. Ark St has been shutout twice in their last 3 SEC road gms and lost 27-0 in ‘06 here with 91 of their 177 yds in the 4Q. Auburn does have to play Miss St on Thurs so there is a legitimate look ahead threat and Ark St only to lost to Iowa by 3 on the road LY, upset Texas A&M in College Station in ‘08 and almost upset #4 Texas on the road in the ‘07 opener as a 39 pt dog. While ASU has just 11 starters back that is similar to the amount returning the L2Y. Ark St is a team capable of hanging inside the large number. SUNDAY, September 5thTulsa 34 E CAROLINA 24 - Last year Tulsa trailed EC 20-0 and cut the deficit to only 6 after 3Q’s but a horrible 4Q that included 2 IR TD’s, a SOD at the EC7 and a 49 yd EC FR TD led to the 44-17 blowout. The home team has lost 3 str (upsets the L2Y). In the last visit from Tulsa (‘06) EC never had the lead being held to just 241 yds. East Carolina is 1-5 ATS in CUSA openers. These two met in the CUSA Title game in ‘08 and Tulsa was at home and had a 28-14 FD edge but lost due to TO’s. TY Tulsa has 14 ret starters and is a much stronger team than the ‘09 version while EC is making some large changes on both offense and defense and has just 7 ret starters with 32 lettermen lost and figures to be in a rebuilding year. The visitor is 3-0 SU/ATS. TEXAS TECH 38 Smu 24 - In their 3 recent meetings SMU has been non-competitive with TT winning by an avg of 42-6 but they covered the last meeting in ‘08 (+36’) losing 43-7. Both teams have pass happy offenses with June Jones firmly committed to it but Tommy Tuberville has opted to stick with Leach’s pass attack while adding more running to it. Texas Tech is 16-1 SU and 12-2-1 ATS in home openers. Both teams have explosive offenses and TT’s edge on defense is not as much as you would think (#53 vs #75). SMU is 13-5-1 as a DD AD and is capable of making this a game in the 4Q.

MONDAY, September 6th† Virginia Tech vs Boise St - Landover, MD. This is VT’s 2nd game at this stadium and the 1st was a loss in ‘04 losing 24-13 (+17) to #1 USC. This is a national title elimination game and Boise St fields a team that can knock off any foe in a one game showdown (beat Okla and TCU in Fiesta Bowls) and they have a bye next week. Boise is the most exp’d team in the country with a 92% exp grade and 20 ret starters. VT has a super backfield with QB Taylor and RB’s Williams and Evans. They only have 4 starters back on defense but DC Bud Foster always fields a solid group. VT will clearly have the crowd edge and this one is on a green grass field not Boise’s preferred blue home surface. A Boise win here could have them playing in the BCS National Title Game at the end of the year and they have our #2 rated ST’s which counters an edge which VT usually has. UNDERDOG PLAY OF THE WEEKOver the past 26 years this play has been a reader favorite hitting 188-137. Over the last 9 years the Underdog Play of the Week has added 33 OUTRIGHT UPSET WINNERS to the incredible record! Here is the first Underdog Play for the 2010 season:

Baltimore. Surprisingly prior to the ‘05 meeting (MD won 23-20), these in-state foes last met in 1965 (30 miles apart). Maryland is 3-11 SU and 4-10 ATS on artificial turf since 2003. Maryland has the large edge of having the entire month of August to prep for the Navy option and only has Morgan St on deck. The Terps have just 12 starters back from a 2-10 team but will more resemble their bowl squads of the previous 3 years. We rate their D #59 (Navy #84). Navy has 12 ret starters (tied for most in 4 yrs) from the team that walloped Missouri in the Texas Bowl. MD’s best edge is on ST’s (#14-73). We will call for the Terps to pull the upset. FORECAST: Maryland 31 Navy 27

OTHER COLLEGE GAMES CONT † North Carolina 20 Lsu 13 - Chick-fil-A College Kickoff in the Georgia Dome with tickets evenly split and a sellout expected. LSU last faced an ACC school in the ‘08 Chick-fil-A Bowl in this dome and whipped GT 38-3 as a dog. This is their 3rd trip here in 6 years (6-1 SU all-time here) while NC has not played in a dome S/’02. NC is the much more veteran team with 19 st’rs back and most of their starting defensive players are at the top of the draft boards for next year (provided no susp by NCAA investigation). LSU finished #17 LY but only has 10 st’rs back and despite being 9-4 was outgained by 23 ypg in ‘09! This is a great game to open the year and important for both leagues but we will call for the Tar Heels to come out on top as long as the majority of their players are cleared to play. Wisconsin 44 UNLV 20 - UW is 6-2 SU, 1-5 ATS in this low scoring series which has avg’d just 27.3 ppg the L/3 (not incl the ‘02 game which ended with 7:41 left 4Q due to an electrical outage). The Badgers are 4-1 ATS when opening the season on the road and usually have the crowd edge for these Sept trips to Vegas. In their last meeting UNLV almost upset the #5 Badgers before falling late, 20-13. The Badgers had just 10 ret st’rs LY but are much stronger this year with 16 back and only have San Jose on deck. New UNLV HC Hauck steps into a good spot as UNLV had talent but underachieved the last few years. He does have 15 ret st’rs including QB Clayton and some solid WR’s. UNLV has decent talent in their front 7 on D but allowed 5.7 ypc rush in ‘09 and that is deadly vs a Wisconsin team that is at its best when able to run downhill and UW has one of the best O-line’s and RB corps in the country. UNLV is 12-7 as a HD and UW is 3-5 as an AF but teams that dominate the line usually get big wins. GEORGIA 41 Louisiana 10 - 1st meeting. Under Richt, UGA is 4-0 SU but 0-4 ATS vs Sun Belt teams winning by an avg of 41-17. The Dawgs are just 2-7 ATS as a DD HF and on a 1-9 ATS run as a HF. UL is 0-12 SU but 7-5 ATS in road openers. Georgia has the best O-line in the country and super RB’s. UL allowed 4.6 ypc rush LY but have 5 of their front 7 back. UL upset Kansas St LY at home and only lost to Illinois by 3 and at Kan St by 8 in ‘08. CLEMSON 45 N Texas 17 - First meeting. Clemson is 4-0 SU vs current Sun Belt opps with the avg score 44-15. North Texas is a much improved team but does have a 1st time starting QB in Death Valley vs an defensive front 7 loaded with NFL caliber players. Clem-son only has Presbyterian on deck while NT has more winnable games vs Rice and Army on deck and may try and stay healthy for those.

To Read rankings - YPC is yards per carry for each team's offense and defense. Turnover edge is the amount of turnovers that team is + or -. OFF YPP is offensive yds per point. This shows the avg amount of yds a team travelled per point scored. The lower the number the more efficient the off. DEF YPP is defensive yds per point. The higher the number here, the better the def is at making their opponents work at scoring points. The remaining columns show the team's rank in that category. Next to the passing ratings there may be a H or an X. On the offensive side a H means they are completing over 59% of their passes while the X shows that their QB's are completing less than 53%. Defensively, the opposite holds true as the H has that team's def holding its opp under 53% completions and the X shows that they allow over 59% completions.

PRO STAT PLAYSUsing a strictly statistical analysis on the information above, our resident statistician releases a top play of the week during the NFL regular season each week in the Power Sweep Newsletter. This gives you a play based strictly on their ranking offensively and defensively against their opponent. Quite often this ends up being one of the higher lined games.

BOWL HANGOVERFor a team to get to a bowl game, they had to have been successful the previous year. Teams off a 14 pt loss did lose a bit of their swagger. Now going on the road in their opening game the next year or facing a superior foe, this team which lost confidence, is perhaps unable to regain it in a much tougher situation. We have found that since 2000, teams that have lost by 14 points or more in a bowl that are either an underdog or away from home are a poor 12-25 32% ATS. Therefore, Play AGAINST a team that lost by 14 points or more in a bowl game and opens up the following season away from home or as an underdog.
