Power, Teamwork, Leadership

“Power is always associated with that which supports the significance of life itself. Power appeals to what uplifts, dignifies, and ennobles. If we analyze the nature of force, it becomes readily apparent why it must always succumb to power. Force automatically creates counter-force and therefore is self-limiting. Force always moves against something, whereas power doesn’t move against anything at all.” David Hawkins, “Power vs Force”

This week I am asking all of us to pay close attention to the difference between power and force in our thoughts and actions as well as the world stage. As David Hawkins suggests, when we are in our power we are rooted in our life’s purpose, our principles, and our core truth. We are grounded in essence. When we are participating in force we have stepped off the solid ground of being and set up a force/counter-force of limited efficacy over time.

Effective leadership and strong teamwork are created when we stand in our power, collaborating with and valuing others’ core truth – even if we don’t always agree. Too often we can fall into ways of micro-aggression, believing that we must force another to think or act in the way we want them to, or believing that rejection, judgment and criticism will effect change. We may get a temporary “win” from this approach and think it works, but these tactics always back-fire. Instead of long-term cooperation and respectful exchanges of differing views, we end up creating defensive responses, coalitions built on fear and mistrust. Our power - the purpose and meaning that uplifts, enriches and ennobles - becomes distant.

This month’s topics are centered on the concept of “aiming” ourselves to make sure the arrow of our power is let fly straight and true, to hit the bull’s-eye of our intention. Watch closely your own use of power vs force this week. Wherever possible, stand in your power, releasing the need to force an outcome.
