Every year the amount of power outages Americans experience increases. In fact, The U.S. Department of Energy recorded 3,600 in 2014 alone! When your power goes out, what is your first response? Make sure your family is safe then find the candles? The flashlights? Whenever an unexpected power outage occurs there is always the fear of not knowing when or if your power will come back on. What if you never had to worry about losing your power at all? With a propane powered standby generator, you don’t! This equipment, along with a steady fuel flow from your propane tank, will continue to give your home power during an outage. A propane powered generator is installed above ground outside your home and starts automatically, the moment the power goes out. They also come in a wide variety of sizes, giving you the flexibility to choose the right one to fit your family’s needs. Rather than running around your home looking for a light source, sit back and relax while your generator allows for a fully functioning home. Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986

To comply with Proposition 65, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, we are obliged to issue the following warning:

PROPANE contains chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm. State law requires us to warn you of the presence of these chemicals. Benzene, soot and formaldehyde are such chemicals. A trace amount of benzene may occur in propane, but will normally be consumed during combustion.

Exposure through leaking gas is possible. Soot and formaldehyde, byproducts of burning gas, are minimized by proper combustion. Delta Liquid Energy encourages all of its customers to use propane safely. You should read and follow all use, care, and manufacturer instructions for propane appliances and equipment. Proper ventilation and frequent inspection of propane appliances and equipment are highly recommended.

Our service technicians are available to check and adjust your propane gas appliances. A warning odor is added to propane so that leaks of unburned gas can be quickly detected. If gas odor is detected, call us immediately.

Which is Right for You?Standby Generator or Portable Generator?

While both types of generators offer a solution to home backup power, it is important to understand one key difference: standby generators are a permanent solution while portable generators offer a more temporary solution. Because they are connected to the home’s electrical system and propane supply, standby generators provide a seamless transition of power and keep things running smoothly when an outage occurs. A portable generator requires the homeowner to get the generator out from where it is being stored and manually connect it to the home’s electrical system via a transfer switch or a separate cord connecting to individual items. Portable generators also need to be refueled on a regular basis.

Generator Safety Should Always Be a Top PriorityWe can’t stress enough to always read and follow the manufacturer’s operating manual before running a generator. Pay close attention to all instructions and safety considerations to ensure proper use of the equipment.

Safety is key when operating a portable generator. Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a reality. Never operate a portable generator inside your home, open or closed garage, basement or near windows or vents that could allow CO to enter the home.

Installing carbon monoxide alarms in the living spaces of your home will alert your family and you to carbon monoxide poisoning if generator exhaust enters the house.

Do not ever over-fill your portable generator’s tank. Propane is a flammable gas and if a tank is over-filled the fuel can flow onto a hot engine, causing a fire or explosion. Always allow some room in the tank for the propane to expand. Also, it is important to remember to never fill your fuel tank while the generator is operational.

The winter months are here and proper usage of your propane powered equipment is important. As the days get shorter and weather gets cooler, it stands to reason that your propane usage will go up. Here are a few ways your family can maintain a warm winter while still enjoying all the benefits of your propane appliances:

Maintaining a sufficient supply of propane in your tank is necessary to keep your home functioning during the winter season. Delta Liquid Energy uses a routing system to ensure your tank gets refilled based upon your normal usage. If you have unexpected high use during this time of year, you can periodically check your tank’s gauge and contact us to come refill your tank. We will do our best to never let you run out of gas! Another option to continually monitor your tank level is to add a satellite driven monitor to your tank for a small increase in your service fee. This monitor will send DLE your tank reading daily so that we can keep a close eye on when to schedule your next delivery.

Even though your propane powered grill or portable heater may emit a nice amount of heat, remember to never use your outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas. If a natural disaster strikes and you are without power for an extended period, it still is never safe to use propane appliances intended for outdoor use, indoors.

Propane cylinders and outdoor appliances require proper ventilation and should be stored outdoors. Finally, it is always best to leave repairs and maintenance of your propane equipment to the professionals. Schedule an annual checkup for your appliances to make sure they are in proper working order.

**If at any time you feel a propane appliance is not working properly, do not try to repair cylinder or tank parts on your own. Give us a call and we will come to your home and make any necessary repairs.**

Tips for a Warm, Safe WinterA Few Reminders on Safe Use of Your Propane This Winter

It is always important to hope for the best but prepare for the worst as safety is a top priority if your home experiences a power outage. Being prepared will help keep your family calm should any instance cause you to lose power. Here are five useful tips to ensure your family is ready in the event of an emergency:1. Prepare a Plan – Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do and where to go during a power

outage. Designate a safe room to meet, post a list of emergency contacts, know how and where to shut off all electrical and propane power. Review your safety plan with your family often!

2. Keep a Kit – Extra supplies such as water, non-perishable food, clothing, blankets, flashlights, and batteries should be kept in a place that is easily accessible to all family members.

3. Make Sure Your Nose, Knows! – All members of your family should be familiar with the smell of propane. It has a very distinct odor like that of a skunk spray or rotten eggs. Ensuring everyone in your home knows this smell will be helpful to detect any potential leaks.

4. Detect Dangerous Gases – Install a carbon monoxide (CO) detector on each level of your home. CO is a dangerous, colorless, odorless gas that can be generated from defective appliances. A detector will sound an alarm if there are excessive amounts of CO in your home. Being proactive by installing a CO detector will keep your family safe.

5. Remain Relaxed – Above all, remember to remain calm in any severe situation. Make sound judgement calls to ensure the safety of yourself and those around you. Use battery powered radios to stay informed and cell phones to stay connected by subscribing to text alerts from government agencies.
