De v e l o p m e n t s in Information Technology have reengineered both

mankind’s lifestyles and the operations of businesses. Ongoing and rapid developments have offered promise but not without challenges and impediments.

This trend is expected to continue. Developments in big data and analytics are no exceptions. Most businesses are likely to be impacted with these developments. For the third-party logistics sector too, big data and analytics will offer scope to reengineer supply chains. This in turn, will significantly impact other businesses.

The Mc Kinsey Global Institute (MGI) defines

Big Data as “databases whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, manage and analyse” [Mehrotra (2012)]

According to Wikipedia, “Big Data

is a term for data sets that are so complex that

traditional data processing application software is

Big Data and Analytics:A Revolution for the Logistics Industry

Dr B V Cadambi

inadequate to deal with them. Big data challenges including capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, sharing, updating and information privacy.”

Thus, Big Data is characterized by large volumes of a variety of data and where the velocity of data generation is astronomical. Consider for example, Burlington Motor Carriers, a leading truckload carrier who transport different materials, some of which are hazardous using drivers with varied expertise levels. A variety of trucks are deployed including trailers and sometimes trucks with air conditioning facility. Customer requests for pickup and drop timings are communicated and these vary from same day delivery to two days delivery. Transportation and loading/unloading times are subject to uncertainty. The company’s IT systems capture data with details of customer requests, truck and driver availabilities on a real-time basis. The importance of real time systems is owing to both uncertainties and varieties.

Such data could be analysed and deployed for quality decision making and consequently to step up operational performance. Burlington Motor Carriers used these data for the development of a real time scheduling system using Operations Research drawing on external expertise. The goals of the scheduling system are to minimize the total miles of empty truck movement, meeting delivery commitments to customers and satisfying drivers who request for service completion points at proximity to their homes. It was found that the proposed system outperformed intuition on all the three goals. [Powell et. al. (2002)]

Effective use of data is referred to as analytics. Davenport and Harris (2007) define analytics as “the effective use of data, statistical

and quantitative analysis, exploratory and predictive models and fact-based management to drive decisions and actions.” The authors refer to business intelligence as a “set of technologies and processes that use data to understand and analyse business performance” and the two together constitute business analytics. Business analytics serves to capitalize on the power of Big Data.

Big data and analytics have impacted logistics service providers and hence their clients too. Two other examples are cited below

UPS, a leading provider of specialized transport and logistics services operates worldwide. Their operations span package pickup/delivery, sorting packages at hubs, feeder operations in which packages are moved from one hub to another or to a delivery centre. UPS uses both road and air transportation. Analytic approaches are used at all operations. For instance, analytic approaches along with map data, customer data and GPS are used to provide drivers with optimized routes. This has resulted in reduced miles traversed and this in turn has reduced fuel consumption leading to cost savings. Also, deliveries per day has increased. [Winters et.al (2010)]

“The budget proposals on the logistics sector aim to address the

cost and performance inefficiencies in the logistics supply chain. The broader goal is to bring down the logistics cost to GDP ratio to make it on a par with the global standards. A potent way to enhance supply chain efficiency is to push infrastructure development. So, the government is rightly focusing

on building warehouses, cold storages through PPP model and providing viability gap funding to spread the network of efficient warehouses to the remote parts of the country which will reduce unnecessary wastages and boost profitability.”

Mr. RK Narayan, CEO, Allcargo Logistics & Industrial Parks Private Limited

“The government’s focus on logistics is highly appreciated. The National

Logistics Policy is a constructive move and will bring a positive shift in the logistics industry’s current position. Creation of single-window clearances and rolling out more favourable policies is another step as logistics is important and will act as a catalyst in driving economic growth. These steps in Budget will foster employment generation and skill development which are vital to sustainable and long-term growth.”T.A. Krishnan, CEO & Co-founder, Ecom Express Private

“It is heartening to see how this year’s Union Budget focuses on

promoting India as an investment and innovation hub. Focus on entrepreneurship, skill development and supply chain economy as well as thrust on technology are important for the growth of the Government’s Digital India and Make in India programs.”

Mr. Vartul Jain, SVP and Chief Financial Officer GreyOrange

“The focus on logistics through the development of 9000 km of

economic corridors is a welcome move. It will encourage economic transformation and seek to improve connectivity that is much needed for the growing economy. We look forward to the National Logistics Policy which will clarify the roles of the Union Government, State Governments

and key regulators. We are keen to know about the e-logistics market as mentioned by FM. It will be interesting to see the thrust on agri-warehousing and the proposal of running Self Help Groups (SHG) in the villages to reduce logistics costs.”

Using a blockchain distributed ledger network in tandem with IoT sensors will provide cold

chain participants with needed controls to help automate and secure every step in a temperature-sensitive itinerary.

The driver of a refrigerated truck returns to his rig after a short break and notices that the display unit on the side of the vehicle registers the temperature inside at almost 60 degrees Fahrenheit—well above the freezing point it’s supposed to remain at. He makes a note in his log and calls his supervisor, who tells him to come in immediately. “We’re going to have to destroy the goods you’re carrying,” the supervisor says.

How often does that kind of keen-eyed, proactive supervision take place in the typical consumables-based supply chain? To judge from the increasing number of food contaminations being reported, not often enough. Which is why it’s important to automate the monitoring of a supply chain’s many starts, stops and hand-offs—and remove the human factor from that decision loop as much as possible

The solution for these so-called cold chains: deploying blockchain distributed ledger technology combined with Internet of Things sensors.

When combined with IoT tools, a blockchain network can assure cold chain partners that temperature-sensitive commodities such as food, pharmaceuticals and chemicals are monitored and well maintained throughout the supply chain itinerary. Meantime, the vagaries of human observation and decision-making are kept to a minimum.

A Public ProblemThat we don’t have great tracking

mechanisms for perishable goods can be

“Blockchain and IoT come together to reduce cargo spoilage in supply chains”

By C. Prasanna Venkatesan – Director, Digitization and Advanced Technologies, Industry Solutions Group, Oracle - USA

deduced from the fact that the public is typically made aware of a contamination problem only after it’s already a widespread problem. It can take as long as 10 months, for example, for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to recall tainted products from store shelves, according to a recent report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

When tracking perishable commodities throughout the supply chain journey, not only are data points related to time and distance required, but also temperature, humidity and altitude, among others. And while most refrigerated shipping containers or trucks have metering units built into them (as in our example above), most often that data isn’t monitored back at headquarters. Or if it is transmitted, it’s sent only to the owner of that particular container or truck, likely sitting in a siloed server, unavailable to other supply chain participants.

That’s why using blockchain and IoT in tandem is so important. By attaching sensors to perishables at the pallet or crate level, data connectivity is maintained throughout the supply chain journey, whether items are on a truck, a train or a boat. And by using a blockchain network, all supply chain participants share access to that data as soon as it’s relayed from the field.

Safety MeasuresBlockchain, in tandem with IoT, provides

the real-time continuity and control, along with after-the-fact failure analysis, to make safety measures demonstrable and certifiable. The Dairy Farmers of America, for example, is working with a blockchain platform provider on ways to mitigate contamination issues.

The emerging cold chains for food alternatives and pharmaceuticals generated using biotech engineering techniques are tailor-made for blockchain and IoT. For instance, a bio-engineered vaccine might require a highly exact and disciplined temperature-controlled environment stretching from manufacturer to patient.

Government regulators, for the most part, are taking a wait-and-see approach to requiring the use of blockchain in cold chains. The Singapore government, however, is moving ahead aggressively to establish blockchain platforms and applications for many of its industries, including food and healthcare.

Blockchain is about trust and IoT is about control. Combining them provides a technology-based framework that supply chain systems have been lacking—especially those that need to keep their cool.
