Power is delivered to thespindle through a two speedgearbox allowing high spindlespeeds as well as powerful lowend torque. The gearbox andspindle motor are isolated fromthe spindle, eliminating transferof heat and vibration.
Isolated Gear Box (DI Gear Box)*
The headstock casting is made of Meehanite and ribbed on theoutside to increase the surface area for better heat dissipation. Theheadstock and main spindle are manu-factured in a temperaturecontrolled environment then assembled and tested in our cleanroom. The heavy duty cartridge type spindle is supported by a doublerow of cylindrical roller bearings in the front and rear, with duplexangular thrust bearings in between. The cylindrical roller bearingsfeature a large contact surface which ensures the highest rigidity forheavy loads and superior surface finishes. All spindle bearings arepermanently grease lubricated precision class P4.

The 45kW (60.3Hp) spindle motor provides power for heavy stock removal, greatly reducing the number of roughing passes required.The reliable digital AC spindle motor provides fast acceleration and is maintenance free. The preloaded spindle bearings arespecifically calibrated to maintain the perfect balance of rigidity and speed. The geared headstock ensures optimal power throughouta wide speed range.

The large 12 and 10 station heavy duty turret features a largediameter Curvic coupling and hydraulic clamp force. The heavyduty design provides unsurpassed rigidity for heavy stockremoval, fine surface finishes, long boring bar overhang ratios,and extended tool life. Turret rotation, deceleration and clampare all controlled by a reliable high torque-hydraulic indexmotor. Unclamp and rotation are virtually simultaneous. Turretindexing is non-stop bi-directional, with a 0.25 second nextstation index time. Turning tools are securely attached to theturret by wedge clamps.
Fast Turret Indexing
Preci-Flex ready rotary tool holders are availableon the milling versions. Preci-Flex is a toolingsystem utilizes the existing ER collet taper in therotary holders. The spindle face is precisionground relative to the taper and there are fourdrilled and tapped holders in this face. The Preci-Flex adapters locate on both the taper and thespindle face for maximum rigidity.
Preci-Flex Ready Rotary Tools
The large 12 station heavy duty turret features alarge Curvic coupling diameter. This heavy dutydesign provides unsurpassed rigidity for heavystock removal, fine surface finishes, andextended tool life. Indexing repeatability is±0.0055 degrees. Turret indexing is non-stopbi-directional. An extremely reliable high-torquehydraulic motor provides for quick turretindexing. 32mm square tool holders aremounted directly to the turret. The boring barcapacity is 60mm. The turret features a flexibledesign, allowing for left or right handed, ID orOD tool placement.

PUMA 480 series
Rapid Traverse
The PUMA 480 series is a true 45 degree slant bed design. The bed is a one piece casting with both the saddle and tailstockguideways in the same plane to eliminate thermal distortion. The heavily ribbed torque tube design prevents twisting and defor-mation. Fine grain Meehanite processed cast iron is used because of its excellent dampening characteristics. This ensures highrigidity with no deformation during heavy cutting. The slant angle allows for easy loading, changing and inspection of tools. Allguideways are wide wrap-around rectangular type for un-surpassed long-term rigidity and accuracy. The guideways are widelyspaced to ensure stability and fully protected. Each guide-way is induction hardened and precision ground. A fluroplastic resin,Rulon£ó 142, is bonded to the mating way surfaces, for its wear and friction characteristics and then hand scraped for a perfectfit and center height. Optional long bed enables extra-long shaft machining.

Safety Design for HumanAxis Drive Construction and Tail Stock
Double-Paneled Safety Window
The operator safety can be enhancedthrough the front door with its shockabsorbing laminated glass and doublepanel construction. The windowswithout grating also provide a clearview of the machine inside.
Double Pretensioned Ball Screw
Programmable Tailstock
The programmable tailstock body is mounted on the sameguideway surface as the headstock. The heavy casting,large 120mm (4.7 inch) diameter quill, and precisionMorse Taper #6 live center provide outstanding rigidity.The 120mm (4.7 inch) quill stroke is activated by eitherthe program or foot switch. Auto lubrication is provided tothe quill and guideways.
Axis Drives
Each axis is powered by a maintenancefree digital AC servo motor. These hightorque drive motors are connected to theball screws without intermediate gears forquiet and responsive slide movement withvirtually no backlash.
Operator's Panel
The operator control panel is mounted on an adjustablependant for easy viewing and accessibility during set-upand operation. The layout and location of the panel isergonomically designed to be efficient and convenientfor the operator. Comprehensive alarm diag-nostics areprovided for the machine, control and programmingerrors.

Each ball screw has been carefully selected toachieve a combination of high accuracy, highrapid traverse rates and high feed thrust. All ballscrews are fully supported on both ends.
Both the X and Z axes features a double pretensioned ball screw, supportedon each end by precision class P4 angular contact thrust bearings. Both axesare driven by large diameter, high precision ball screws.

Collection of Waste Lubrication Oil
Less waste lubrication oil extends the life timeof the coolant water and cut down the grimeand offensive smell of the machine inside.
No Coolant Leakage
Rigorously designed, manufactured and testedmachine covers do not permit coolant leakagein any condition. The factory always keeps ourenvironment clean.
Metered Way Lubrication
Automatic lubrication is providedto all guideways, ball screws andthe tailstock quill. A maintenancefree piston distributor delivers aprecise quantity of oil to eachlubrication point. The 1.8 L (0.5 galon) reservoirlasts up to 80 hours. A low levelalarm prevents the machine fromrestarting without lubricant.
Electric Torque Limiters
Each axis ball screw is protected by electric torque limiters tominimize damage in the event of a crash. Upon impact, the limiterimmediately stops the machine.

Coolant System
The high pressure flushes chips out of drilled holes, reducesthe need for peck drill cycles, meets the requirements of mostinsert drill manufactures and significantly increases tool life.
Tool Pre-Setter
The automatic tool setterreduces set-up time byminimizing the need forskim cuts, measurementsand entering tool offsets.The tool setting arm ismoved by an electric motorand can be controlledthrough the program.
Hydraulic Power Unit
The temperatureof the hydraulicoil is regulated bya cooling system.
