What is Rotary? Rotary International is an association of Rotary clubs worldwide. It’s made up of more than 33,000 Rotary clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. The members of these autonomous clubs are called Rotarians, and they form a global network of 1.2 million business and professional leaders, all volunteering their Time, Talents & Treasures to serve their communities and the world.

In the beginning…
The first Rotary Club was organized in Chicago in 1905, by Paul P. Harris.

The club, with four members, met in rotation at the offices of the members - thus the name Rotary.(Attorney, coal dealer, mining engineer & merchant tailor)
There are currently 34,000+ clubs with 1.2 mb members, in 200 countries & Geographic regions worldwide.*

Rotary recognized that fellowship alone would not keep a group together — there needed to be a purpose.
First project was public rest rooms in downtown Chicago.

Women in Rotary
In 1988-89 women were admitted to Rotary.
Each year about 25% of the District 6220 club presidents are women.
Lorraine Teuke was Wausau's first woman member in 1988 (our club's secretary for over 35 years)
Rosemary Barnes was our first women president (1998-99) Joined in 1989.
Object of Rotary
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
First. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

In 1985 1,000 children were infected by the disease every day in 125 countries

The declaration follows last week's May 5, 2014 emergency meeting
in Geneva on the spread of polio. Members from the 10 affected
countries (Afghanistan, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia,
Israel, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia and Syrian Arab Republic)
participated in the information exchange.
Experts are concerned about how civil war, strife and unrest
threaten the UN's goal of eradicating polio by 2018.

Vocational Training Teams These are groups of Rotarian or non-Rotarian young professionals who travel to another country to learn or teach about their professions. The program is funded either by a Rotary Foundation district, global or packed grants

Exchanges Rotary Youth Exchange Program
16-18 year olds are exchanged worldwide.
Part of a 8,000+ students/year program.
Rotarians host these young people in their homes for three to five months.
Students become part of the family.
Wausau has hosted students from, Australia, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan & Spain, Belgum, Mexico, Sweden, Norway, & Venezuela to name a few
In the past we have sent students overseas through the "outbound" RYE. Goal is to participate annually
Central States incl: Ontario, WI, MI, Ill, Ind (premier
program in USA)
Rotarian Action Groups (RAGs)
autonomous groups of Rotarians, Rotaractors, Rotary program participants and alumni organized around a specific expertise (such as water, microcredit, a specific disease, etc.) who provide assistance and support to Rotary clubs and districts in implementing large-scale community development and humanitarian service projects. RAGs fund their activities by raising money using their own resources or connections
