• World Rabies Day is observed globally on 28th

September every year.

• This day is observed to raise awareness about

the impact of rabies on humans and animals,

provide information and advice on how to prevent

the disease and take efforts to control rabies.

• The day also marks the death anniversary of the

French chemist and microbiologist, Louis

Pasteur’, who developed the first rabies vaccine.

• 2020 theme : ‘End Rabies: Collaborate,

Vaccinate’.

Rabies

• Rabies is viral disease that causes inflammation of brain (acute encephalitis) in warm-blooded animals.

• It is zoonotic disease i.e. transmitted from one species to another, commonly by bite or scratch from infected animal such as dogs to humans.

• The rabies virus infects central nervous system (CNS) and ultimately causes disease in brain and death.

• Domestic dogs are most common reservoir of rabies virus.• Dog-mediated rabies accounts for more than 95% of human deaths.• Its symptoms include neurological problems and a fear of light and water.• Vaccination of pets helps to prevent and control rabies.

NCDC sanctions Rs 19444 crores in first instalment for MSP operations support to

three states during Kharif season 2020-21

एनसीडीसी ने खरीफ सीजन 2020-21 के िौरान तीन राज्ों को एमएसपी संचालन सहायता के वलए

पहली वकस्त में 19444 करोड़ रुपये की मंजूरी िी

● National Cooperative Development Corporation

(NCDC), the apex financing organization of Union

Agriculture Ministry has sanctioned as first instalment,

funds amounting to Rs 19444 crores to the states of

Chhattisgarh, Haryana and Telangana for Kharif

paddy procurement under Minimum Support Price

(MSP) operations.

● These amounts have been sanctioned to assist the

States/ State Marketing Federations in undertaking

paddy procurement operations in a timely manner

through their respective cooperative organizations.

● Chhattisgarh gets the highest amount to the tune of

Rs 9000 crores.

● Haryana has been sanctioned Rs 5444 crores and

Telangana Rs 5500 crores.

● This proactive step by NCDC during the COVID

pandemic will give the much needed financial support

to farmers of these three states who account for

nearly 75% of production of paddy in the country.

Govt committed to increase public healthcare spending from existing 1.15% of GDP

to 2.5 % by 2025

• Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that

the government is committed to increase

the public healthcare spending from the

existing 1.15 per cent of the GDP to 2.5 per

cent by 2025.

• He added that the 15th Finance

Commission’s high-level group on health

has concurred that healthcare spending

must be raised substantially in the next five

years in view of the present pandemic.

• The minister informed that the National

Health Policy 2017 envisages increasing

the public health expenditure to 2.5 percent

of the GDP by 2025.

• The policy recommends that State

governments should spend more than 8

percent of their budget on the health sector

by 2020.

ADB approves Rs 2,200 crore loan to develop Rajasthan's secondary towns

एडीबी ने राजस्िान के माध्यवमक शहरों को विकवसत करने के वलए 2,200करोड़ रुपये के

ऋणको मंजूरी िी

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved

a 300 million dollar (about Rs 2,200 crore) loan to

finance inclusive water supply and sanitation

infrastructure and services in secondary towns of

Rajasthan.

• The project is expected to build citywide access for

improved water supply services for about 5.7 lakh

people and enhanced sanitation services for about

7.2 lakh people in at least 14 secondary towns.

• These localities have 20,000 to one lakh residents.

• Through the project, water supply systems in at

least eight project towns are expected to improve

by 2027 with about one lakh households including

all urban poor households benefiting from five new

or rehabilitated water treatment plants and 1,350

km of distribution networks.

• Citywide sanitation systems based on the most

cost-effective solutions will also be developed.

• The project will build on three earlier related

projects and sector reforms funded by ADB in

Rajasthan.

India’s Sandalwood trees facing serious threats from Sandalwood Spike Disease

भारत का चंिन का पेड़, चंिन स्पाइक रोगर के गंरभीर खतरे का सामना कर रहा है

• India’s sandalwood trees are facing a serious

threat due to Sandalwood Spike Disease (SSD).

• The natural population of sandalwood in

Marymoor Sandal Forest of Kerala and various

reserve forests in Karnataka, including MM Hills

(Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary), are

heavily infected with SSD.

• It is an infectious disease which is caused by

phytoplasma.

• About 1% to 5% of sandalwood trees lost every

year due to the disease, scientists warn that it

could wipe out the entire natural population if

measures are not taken to prevent its spread.

• Another concern is, any delay in arresting the

trend may result in the disease spreading to

cultivated sandalwood trees.

• The present rapid spread of the infection is

largely due to restrictions on green felling in

forests, which has allowed vectors to spread the

disease to healthy trees.

पेड़ खो जाते हैं, िैज्ञावनकों ने चेतािनी िी है वक अगरर

इसके प्रसार को रोकने के वलए उपाय नही ं वकए गरए तो

यह पूरी प्राकृवतक आबािी का सफाया कर सकता है।

• एक और वचंता की बात यह है वक इस प्रिृवत्त को रोकने में

वकसी भी िेरी से चंिन के पेड़ों की खेती में बीमारी फैल

सकती है।

• संक्रमण का ितषमान तेजी से प्रसार काफी हि तक जंगरल

में हरे रंगर की कटाई पर प्रवतबंध के कारण होता है, वजसने

िैक्टर को बीमारी को स्वस्ि पेड़ों तक फैलाने की अनुमवत

िी है।

Sandalwood Spike Disease:

• It is an infectious disease which is caused by phytoplasma.• Phytoplasmas are bacterial parasites of plant tissues — which are transmitted by

insect vectors and involved in plant-to-plant transmission.• There is no cure as of now for the infection.• Presently, there is no option but to cut down and remove the infected tree to

prevent the spread of the disease.• The disease was first reported in Kodagu, Karnataka in 1899.• More than a million sandalwood trees were removed in the Kodagu and Mysore

region between 1903 and 1916.

Initiative to preserve and promote Kashmiri Pandit culture

homeland seven times, the most recent being

in 1990 when they were forced to flee the

Kashmir valley on account of being targeted by

JKLF and Islamist insurgents.

• Since then, they have been scattered across

numerous cities in India and abroad.

• This has led to the gradual erosion of culture,

language, and heritage.

• Recognising the challenge and driven by a

passion for the community, three corporate

stalwarts: Sanjay Kaul (ex country head –

Apple, India), Ajay Kaul (ex CEO, Jubilant

Food Works), and Mukesh Kachroo (ex CTO,

Gain Capital, USA) have joined forces to

launch an initiative, called ‘Iqwat’, to preserve

DRDO completes key process relating to production of Pinaka rocket system

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize

• The award is named after the founder Director of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), the late Dr (Sir) Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and is known as the ‘Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (SSB) Prize for Science and Technology’.

• The Prize is given each year for outstanding contributions to science and technology.

• Any citizen of India engaged in research in any field of science and technology up to the age of 45 years. Overseas citizen of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) working in India are also eligible.
