The market itself is cyclical. Newer riders aren’t buying new motorcycles but are taking advantage of a strong used-unit market. Pricing may be somewhat to blame, but manufacturers need to also find an aesthetic that pleases the younger generation. Supersport bikes are clearly not the best to ride around town, and with the more urban-centered Millennial genera-

tion, a bike that has some more utilitarian use is becoming more desirable. We also have to keep in mind that we are selling to the digital generation as well: If there is a YouTube video on how to repair a problem their bike is experiencing, they are watching it and learning how to do it on their own. To a dealer, that may spell a loss in service work, but to a parts-and-accessories department, it may be a boon to tools as well as parts sales.

The motorcycle and powersports market is currently flat due to a number of factors. Some categories are growing more than others, but the market is down overall, according to the latest Motorcycle Industry Coun-cil report. We see UTVs, ATVs and other off-road segments doing better than others at the moment. Side-by-sides have been very solid for the past

few years, and it’s hard to tell where the market will go next with all the new units that have been introduced lately. Some problems with supply and recalls have dampened sales in the first part of the year, but that appears to have been remedied. The big trend will be how Millennials will pick up the sport. We see signs that they are interested in rid-ing and participating, but it may not be what we think of as a traditional powersports customer. Side-by-sides and UTVs will continue to grow because they can be used for a family rather than one rider. The price point is high, but the customers who buy them are usually adding custom components.

The growth in the side-by-side industry has been tremendous since the very beginning when Yamaha Rhino was the very first vehicle. Polaris was second to market with its 800, and the model selection has grown every year since. Almost every OE is involved. You look at the dirt-bike side, and it’s several OEs, and it’s the same thing with snow—there are a few OEs. But

when you look at the UTV market, there are many, many more OEs that are involved. So the model selection is getting better, and the technology is getting better. There’s just something for every pocketbook and for every family environment, whether it’s one person with the RS1 or a family of four in a four-seater. It’s an affordable package for the family, and it’s just kind of fun.
