A complete heart block means that there is no communication between the SA node, AV node and the Purkinje fibers so the ventricles are not paced by the SA node at all. The ventricles will attempt to pump some on their own, but the rate and contraction is NOT effective enough to perfuse the body.

What do you do?Usually if a patient has 2nd degree heart blocks consistently, arrangements are made to implant a pacemaker. But if the patient goes into 3rd degree, a patient may need to be externally paced until implanted pacemaker can be placed. Anticipate and gather the lifepak defibrillator/pacemaker and place pads on patient. Be prepared and monitor patient closely.
