SUPERINTENDENT Dr. Beverly Deis
As most of you know, the Polo R-VII School District in
conjunction with the City of Polo and the Polo R-VII Education
Foundation, received a Community Development Block Grant
written in the spring of 2013 for a new Early Childhood
Education Center. The Early Childhood Education Center will
be located just north of the school. Hopefully, construction will
begin in late August and with construction comes numerous
inconveniences. One of the main inconveniences will be with
the large parking lot north of the school, as we are planning on
using the north side of the parking lot for construction traffic.
However, even if we lose some parking spaces for football
games for one season, it will be worth it when the project is
completed. If you have questions regarding the project (or any
other questions), please feel free to call me at the school.
The year is going by quickly as we will soon have
graduation ceremonies at Polo R-VII School. Summer School
will begin on Tuesday, May 27. Please contact Mrs. Palmer or
Mr. Ross if you have questions about Summer School.
As always, Polo R-VII School District welcomes visitors
to our school. Please check in with the Central Office any time
you are visiting the school.

ASK ALLI
1. Why do girls obsess over prom?
Prom is a chance for girls to dress up for an evening.
Around here, girls don’t get to dress up in fancy dresses except
for this occasion which is only once a year. Every girl has a side
where she loves to dress up and have all eyes on her as she
enters a room. Prom is the best place for this to happen.
Personally as a girl I love buying the fancy dress with the high
heels and having a chance to get out somewhere more expensive.
2. What color of prom dress should I wear?
When picking out the perfect dress there are a few things
you must remember. First off if you’re pale don’t pick a pale
color. Try to avoid colors like yellow and white, instead do a
color that’s either bright or dark. If you’re dark complexioned
you can rock any color. Secondly think about your hair. For light
hair girls, light colors aren’t your friend. Dark hair girls you’re
lucky, you can wear almost every color. Hope this helps!
3. How can I stop rumors from spreading?
First off, if you’re not involved then don’t get involved.
Second, don’t be the person who gets caught spreading them. No
one likes people who spread rumors! Finally, if you hear a rumor
that you know isn’t true, speak up and correct who is telling you
the rumor. Rumors are created by those who are jealous. Rumors
are hurtful, so be the person who stands up for what’s right.

Grade Girls Basketball By: Mikayla Reavis
During the basketball season, the 5th
and 6th
grade girls’ team
won two games during their season. They lost two games, playing a
total of four for their season, not counting tournaments. This year the
team attended four tournaments, placing in two of them. They placed
2nd
at Osborne and 3rd
at the Braymer tournament.
The girls were coached by Sarah Rechtermann, who was also
the coach the previous year. There were 11 girls on the basketball
team this year. “Many of the girls showed a desire to learn and
improve the team through hard work,” said Coach Rechtermann. “One
of our biggest weaknesses was many of our girls would fight for the
ball and that would lead to potential foul trouble.” She also said that
one of their biggest accomplishments this year was working together
as a team. “The girls knew what they needed to do individually and as
a team to run each play.”
Sarah said that she was proud of all of the girls because every single
one of them improved over the season. “At the beginning of the year,
many of these girls were very timid and didn’t fight for the ball, but
by the end of the season, these girls turned into Panthers.”
Rechtermann stated. The team had a very successful season this year.
The parents of the girls, and Coach Rechtermann were very proud of
the hard work and enthusiasm the girls had throughout the season.
Saying Goodbye to Part of the Panther
Family By: Danielle Allen
Mrs. Patty Dixon has been teaching at Polo since the 1997-98
school year, 17 years ago! Her favorite part about being a teacher is
helping her students understand that they’ll be happier liking what they
have to do than doing what they like to do. ‘’I will miss the students
very much. I will also miss the many friends I have made with Polo R-
VII Family.’’ After retirement Mrs. Dixons’ plans are to visit her
grandchildren more often, catch up on much needed sleep, enjoy
gardening and being outdoors, getting organized at home and
completing many projects she has put off.
‘’Over the past 34 years I have made a livin’ doing what I have
always wanted to do- TEACH! I have made life out of what I have
given to many children and their families. I always wanted to teach my
students how to live this life on earth and face struggles and improve
their worth, not just the lessons in a book but how to choose the proper
path wherever they may go, to understand truth and know right from
wrong and gather all the beauty of a flower, to dance or sing a song. I
hope I have helped children to grow in wisdom and in grace. I feel that
we both won and I have filled my place, doing my part for character,
confidence, and happiness in many hearts.’’ – Mrs., Dixon
Mrs. Sherrie Silvey, kindergarten and first grade teacher, is
retiring after 14 years. Since 2000 Mrs. Silvey has been a member of
the Polo R-VII staff. Mrs. Silvey loves teaching. Her favorite part of
teaching is when the kids ‘’get it’’, and ‘’they are so excited they beg
me to show them more or they want to research a subject further.’’ She
also said she gets a ‘’kick out’’ of their amusing comments and
reactions. ‘’Light bulb’’ moments are one of her favorites that she will
miss. She loves seeing students use the knowledge they are learning. ‘’I
will also miss the daily, unconditional hugs (Kindergartners & first
grades – past & present, and give great hugs). After retirement Mrs.
Silvey plans are to enjoy family time – grandchildren in particular,
traveling with and without grandkids. She would also like to take back
up guitar lessons. She would like to keep in touch with the Polo student
and staff, and do a little substituting when she can.
‘’I have truly enjoyed working in the Polo school system. I have
enjoyed the camaraderie that can be found with the K-12 staff, as well
as the districts patrons and parents. Polo R-VII District is a wonderful
place and makes great memories.’’ –Mrs. Silvey
Mrs. Connie Hogan, kindergarten teacher, has been a part of the
Polo staff for 21 years. Helping each student succeed and work to the
best of their ability is one of her favorite things about being a teacher.
She has made many wonderful memories over the past years. ‘’I will
miss the students the most. I will also miss the staff and my Polo
School Family. Mrs. Hogan plans on spending more time with her
grandchildren, she says she also might get a ‘’new’’ job or travel a
little. ‘’The sky is the limit!—said Mrs. Dixon
Annual Green Hills Banquet By: Billie Thompson
This year the annual Green Hills Banquet was held at Polo
High School on March 28, 2014. Most of the school organizations
and clubs helped to raise money for their members. The
organizations that helped out were the Polo Pride Band, the Polo
FBLA chapter, and the Polo SADD chapter. Each organization
made money for their contributions to the banquet. They each had
their own responsibilities for the event. The FBLA ran the kids zone
where they entertained the children of members. They had a movie
playing, a bunch of carnival type games and they even had a cake
walk. The SADD chapter directed people on where into the parking
lot and helped the handicapped to the door with golf carts. The band
not only served the meal to the members but also set up and cleaned
the event.
Many people attended this banquet. There was a tasty free
meal provided which consisted of brisket, potatoes, a cookie, and a
piece of bread. They gave multiple prizes for members of all ages.
A few of the prizes that were given were money, toys, and bikes.
This year student had a blast not only be at the banquet, but work
the banquet. If you missed the banquet this year, make sure you
don’t miss it next year.

Third Graders Phone a Friend for Fun
Polo Third Graders in Mrs. Dixon’s and Mrs. Perry’s class took
a field trip on Wednesday, April 23rd
to Green Hills Telephone
Company. The students took a tour of the building after participating in
the PIE-Partners in Education Program for the 2013-2014 School year.
During the visit, the students saw a fun internet video, were given a
brief description of what the employees do as we passed by their desk,
trace a call demo, fiber splicing, locationg cable and were given treats
from Sherryl Garcia and Bobbi Mattox, our tour guides. During the
school year, the students learned history of the telephone, online safety
and how to use a telephone directory.

Polo Junior and Senior Prom By: Hannah Beshears
The Polo junior and senior prom was Saturday April 26,
2014. The theme for prom this year was Club 2K14. Prom was held
at the Polo Community building from 8:00-11:00 pm. The DJ for
prom this year was Curtis Floray. After Prom was held in the Polo
High School gym. The doors opened at 11:30 pm, and no one was
allowed in after 12:30 am. During after prom, the students had
plenty of options for fun activities. According to the
sponsors/advisers for the after prom committee, there was a photo
booth for friends to take pictures together, a monster dual mega
slide that was as tall as the gym, gladiator jousting, 3 on 3
basketball, and El Diablo the mechanical bull. Plus, refreshments,
frozen drinks and all you can eat pizza was served. After Prom
ended at 3:00 am, and breakfast was also served at that time.
Club 2K14 prom was an overall success. With over thirty
couples attending everyone had a great time!

Contest Season is in the Air for FFAers By: Lisa Tackett
Contest season is in the air for the students in the FFA chapter here
at Polo High School. They have been busy these last few weeks
studying for their particular contests that they chose. They went to
4 contests.
On March 25th
, there were four freshmen that went to
districts for FFA Knowledge. Those four students were Jennifer
Farmer, Averie Heil, Shelby Stump, and Billie Thompson; Jenni
Farmer and Billie Thompson tied for the highest scoring
individuals on the team. Out of 30 Knowledge teams in the
Northwest area these four Polo girls placed 11th
with a score of 169.
Unfortunately they did not make it to state this year but all of the
girls did a great job this season.
On April 1st, Polo FFA students on the agronomy, dairy
cattle, dairy foods, entomology, farm management, floriculture,
forestry, livestock, meats, nursery and landscaping, poultry, and
soils went to their district contests. With so many district contest
areas and students involved, we will break this down for you.
Agronomy placed 8th
out of 25 schools with a score of 1,738. The
members on this team were sophomores Dylan Deornellis, Erik
Johnson, Austin McKinzie, and Parker Smith. Erik Johnson was the
highest scoring individual on this team. Dairy cattle placed 25th
out
of 27, with a score of 638. The members on the team were
freshman Austin VanOster and Ryan Virtue. Austin VanOster was
the highest scoring individual on this team. Dairy foods placed 18th
out of 28 with a score of 539. The dairy foods team consisted of
seniors Kayla Eisman, Kolton Roark, Jonathan Shelton, and
freshman Zackery Phillips. Kayla Eisman was the highest scoring
individual for this team.
Entomology placed 22nd
out of 27 teams with a score of
1,002. The team had sophomores Cheyanne Dye, Danielle Gurwell,
Mikayla Reavis, and Lisa Tackett. Mikayla Reavis was the highest
scoring individual on this team. Farm management placed 7th
out of
24 with a score of 595. Juniors Cati Boruch, Sidney Copeland,
Mattie Curp, and Senior Alex Johnson were all on the team. Alex
Johnson not only got highest individual on the team but also out of
all 80 kids he placed 1st in the entire contest. Floriculture placed
19th
out of 33 teams with their score being 1,157. The floriculture
team had seniors Logan Stump, Loren Wagner, and Juniors
Jennifer Adams and Alisha Ross. Logan Stump was the highest
scoring individual from the Polo floriculture team.
Forestry placed 12th
out of 23 teams. The team had seniors
Houston Stone and Justin Thompson along with juniors Wiley
Martin and Adriana Segar. Houston Stone was the highest scoring
individual for this Polo team. The livestock team placed 16th
out of
24 with their score being 1,128. The livestock team had all
freshmen. The team included Autumn Burton, Jake Leonard, and
Taylor Rash. Autumn and Jake Leonard tied for 1st on this Polo
team. The meats team placed 12th
out of the 26 teams that were
there. Meats included juniors Kayla Carr, Jessica Farmer, Jacob
Hicks, and Skylar Howe. Jacob Hicks earned the highest scorer for
this team.
Nursery and landscaping got 16th
out of 17 teams, due to
having only having one week to study for the district contest. The
nursery team had all sophomores Hannah Beshears, Emily Fickess,
Michael Leamer, and Adrianna Staus. Michael Leamer was their
high scorer. The poultry team placed 20th
out of 20 teams, but they
also only had one week to study. The team consisted of
sophomores Montanna Heil and Brandon Hubbard with freshman
Joely Hicks and Alex Myers. Brandon Hubbard was their highest
scorer. The soils team got 3rd
out of 21 teams. The team was a
group of sophomores who were Gage Aubrey, Tyler Erickson,
Jenna Johnson, and Brittany Sheppard. Brittany Sheppard was their
highest scorer.
On April 24th
-26th
the agronomy team, farm management
team, and soils team all went to Columbia for State FFA contest.
All of the Polo FFA students did a great job studying for their
selected contests this season. Even though some of them had to
study for two contests.

FBLA Has a Successful Streak in 2014 By: Aimee Walker
This semester has been a very busy one for the Polo FBLA
chapter! The FBLA members competed in the District Leadership
Conference in Trenton, Missouri in February, hosted a Senior Citizens
Prom in March and a Community Blood Drive in the spring. The FBLA
State Leadership Conference was held April 13th
-15th
down in
Columbia, Missouri.
In February, Polo’s FBLA traveled to Trenton, Missouri to
North Central Missouri College to compete in the District Leadership
Conference. Each year, the FBLA members take online tests or
compete in live interviews for districts. Fifteen Polo FBLA members
went to compete. Out of those members, seven qualified for the State
Leadership Conference in Columbia, Missouri.
On March 15th
, the FBLA members hosted a Senior Citizens
Prom in the school’s multi-purpose room. Each year, Polo’s FBLA
hosts a “prom” night for the senior citizens of the surrounding
communities. The theme for this year was the Roaring Twenties. They
had an outstanding turn out of about eighty people! Dinner was served,
with a silent auction following after. The members and their sponsor,
Ms. Arth, took a lot of time and effort on this to make it a memorable
night for everyone.
The Community Blood Drive was held on the 20th
of March in
the multipurpose room at the school. Several FBLA members
committed to working tables & volunteered from an hour to a few
hours at a time. Each year, once in the fall and once in the spring, the
Polo FBLA hosts a Community Blood Drive. The goal for donations
this year was 35 units of blood. That goal was met with 48 units of
blood donated, and 55 donors who came and either gave blood or
attempted too. Sometimes people have low iron, a heart rate that is too
high, or weigh less than 100 pounds, which makes them not eligible to
donate blood. So out of 55 willing donors, there were 48 units of blood
donated.
In April, FBLA President Mason Misel, Vice President Tristan
Rardon, Secretary Aimee Walker, Treasurer Jennifer Adams, Jacob
Hicks, Joely Hicks and Skylar Howe traveled to Columbia, Missouri
for the State Leadership Conference. Mason, Jacob, and Skylar all
qualified in the Personal Finance test. Joely qualified in the Word
Processing test. Tristan, Jennifer, and Aimee qualified as a group for
the Community Service straight to state contest, which just happened to
be this year’s Senior Citizen prom. Unfortunately, none of them
advanced to the National Leadership Conference in Nashville,
Tennessee in June.
All of the members have had several opportunities to be
involved and active in their FBLA chapter. Hopefully, more
opportunities come along that the organization can be involved in to
further prepare them to be future business leaders.
On Your Mark, Get Set, It’s Track Season! By: Jessica Farmer
The school year is starting to fly by faster and faster now that
everything is winding down except for track! It is just getting started!
The Polo Middle School track team was supposed to go to South
Harrison on April the 14th
, but was postponed due to some random
crazy weather. It will be rescheduled to a later date.
The track team will be involved in five different meets. They
will travel to North Andrew on the 17th
of April, Lexington the 22nd
,
Lawson the 29th
, and Worth County on the 8th
of May. They had better
get their running shoes on, because they have a busy schedule ahead of
them!
Mrs. Fickess is the coach of the middle school track team which
is a group of 18 students. These students include: 7th
grader Madison
Baughman, Shelby Copeland, Sommer Gurwell, Brittany Sperry, and
Taylor Wagner, Nickolas Myers, and Jared Robison. The 8th
graders
are: Sierra Dye, Amanda Hilburn, Makenzie Jay, Megan Latimer,
Teagan Logan, Drake Burton, Luke Cory, James Fleener, Dalton
Frazier, Garrett Jones, and Dylan Sales.
This is a great group of athletes but it will be difficult to spread
only 18 into each event. Mrs. Fickess said that there are a few really
good distance runners. There are some students that will have their four
events filled but also need to go on a relay team. There are many
challenges to overcome but she believes that this group will be just fine
and finish strong!
With all the meets that the middle school will attend, Coach
Fickess feels that Lawson will be the toughest. The plan at the Lawson
meet is to separate the 7th
and 8th
grade into their own events. Being
with their own age group will be helpful for the students, but this meet
will take a lot longer than any other meet.
This year has been very fun and interesting for all the students
and Mrs. Fickess. The students have a nickname for their group. At
breakdowns of huddles, the student will scream “Baby Savers!” The
story behind this was from one day at practice when they found a
toddler wandering around the streets about a block away from his
home. They actually found his home and brought the toddler back.
Apparently, the mother was on the phone when the child escaped the
baby lock. This was one of the many memorable events that have taken
place this season. Mrs. Fickess also mentioned that during every
practice, there seems to always be someone that farts during sit-ups. I
thought that was pretty funny! This year should be very successful and
continue to be fun.
To Cheer or Not? Is That Even a Question? By: Mattie Curp
Cheerleading tryouts are one of the two athletic tryouts that
Polo R-7 actually holds the other being for color guard. Girls were
running around frantic trying to make sure that they had their cheers
memorized perfectly for the big day. Coaches, cheerleading
coordinators, and girls alike ran around April 7th
through April 9th,
ensuring that the tryouts were the best Polo has ever had.
Four women ran the cheer tryouts this year and worked very
hard to make sure that it was fair for everyone. Kim Templeton has
been working off and on with the cheerleading program since 2010,
first as the Varsity football cheerleading coach, now as the
cheerleading coordinator. Varsity Football Cheerleading coach,
Michelle Curp, has been a coach at Polo since 2010 and started with
the junior high squad. Varsity Basketball Cheerleading coach,
Danielle Green, started coaching for us last year. Leanne Meadows,
Junior High Cheerleading coach, was a new coach for Polo this year,
but will not be continuing coaching next year due to scheduling
conflicts.
On April 9th
, the tryouts were held at 5:30 p.m. for both
Varsity and Junior High. The Varsity girls did two cheers they learned
at practice and one that they came up with on their own, whereas the
Junior High did one cheer learned at practice and one of their own.
The judges this year were Braymer and Richmond’s Varsity
Cheerleading coaches, both of which are competing next year. When
being scored, the participant’s teachers are given an evaluation sheet
on the said person’s behavior in class. These scores are then added
with tryout scores and those with the highest overall scores are the
next year’s new cheerleaders.
The results for the 2014-2015 cheer squads are:
Varsity Football Cheerleading- Danielle Allen, Cati Boruch, Mattie
Curp, Skylar Howe, Adriana Segar, Emily Fickess, Adriana Staus,
Stormy Farmer, Jorgia Cory, Jenni Farmer, Joely Hicks, and Billie
Thompson
Vasity Basketball Cheerleading- Skylar Howe, Jorgia Cory, Stormy
Farmer, Emily Fickess, Adrianna Staus, Jenni Farmer, Joely Hicks,
Billie Thompson, Megan Latimer, and Sierra Dye
Middle School Cheerleading- Maddy Baughman, Mariah Clevenger,
Shelby Copeland, Sommer Gurwell, Kallie Heil, Brittany Sperry,
Taylor Wagner, and Jordan Rash
Track Stars By: Joely Hicks
This year has been going great for the Polo High School
track athletes. Jill Rardon, the short distance coach, is excited about
everyone’s personal records, the nice weather, everyone’s great
attitude, and that her track kids are fun to coach. Coach Rardon sees
this season ending with the girls being district champs for the 3rd
year in a row, and she thinks the boys will end up on the top also. I
asked her how the season has been going, she replied, “I have an
excellent young team with a lot of enthusiasm, everyone works
hard.”
Jonathan Pickrell is the high school track coach. For distance
runners, Coach Pickrell believes that both teams have potential to
do great at districts, but it depends on how hard they keep working
and how much they want it. He said, “Everyone is getting really
good times, a lot of new kids that have never went out for track are
impressing me with their times. This year we have strong relays and
have a lot of potential to make it to state.” Coach Pickrell is excited
because it is his first year as a track coach and is he ready to go back
down to state. This year watch his kids compete with bigger schools
this season.
Cati Boruch is a junior at Polo and is also one of the captains
of the high school track team. She is also very excited about this
year. Cati said that everyone seems to be getting along great, and
they are improving their times more and more almost every meet.
Cati is very happy to be one of the captains on the team and is
thankful. Good luck to the high school track team and the last of
their season, I am excited on how they will end out the season.
