What Makes Up the

Solar System?

Sun

Planetsand

other small objects

Page 3: Pp1

THE SUNAka Yellow Dwarf Star

The sun is the center of our solar system and holds everything in place by its gravity.

It is a large star, which are hot balls of glowing gas that give off energy.

We need the suns light energy, without it plants wouldn’t grow and Earth would be too cold for anything to live on it.

Page 4: Pp1

Planets

Eight Planets orbit the sun

These planets are separated and classified as Inner and Outer planets.

Page 5: Pp1

Inner Planets

Mercur

Venus EarthMars

The Inner Planets consist of the 4 planets closest to the sun.

They are…

Page 6: Pp1

Inner Planets cont…

All the inner planets have rocky surfaces.

They are smaller and warmer because of how close they are to the sun.

You are able to see Venus, Mars, and possibly Mercury with a telescope.

Page 7: Pp1

Earth and Mars are the only inner planets that have moons.

Earth has 1 and Mars has 2.

Page 8: Pp1

THE MOON IS EARTH'S CLOSEST NEIGHBOR IN SPACE, BUT IT IS STILL FAR AWAY. The Earth-moon distance is about 239,000 miles

That’s crazy to think since you can see part of the moon every night.

Earth’s Moon

Page 9: Pp1

Venus ( Earths Sister)

Surface is rocky, with a constant cover of thick clouds

Mercury:Surface is rocky, with many craters

Earth:Mostly water, with some land areas.

Mars:Surface is rocky, with red dust and no water.

Outer Planets

The outer planets are the ones farthest from the sun.

They are…

JupiterSaturn

Neptune

UranusPluto

Page 11: Pp1

Jupiter

Jupiter is the largest planet with the most moons, it has 61!

Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, is a huge storm on its surface.

Page 12: Pp1

SaturnSaturn is one of the two planets with rings.

Saturn has at least 33 moons.

Its rings reach out about 258,000 miles from its surface.

Page 13: Pp1

Uranus•Has at least 25 moons

•2nd planet with rings

Neptune•Has at least 13 moons

•Is now considered the farthest planet from the sun

Page 14: Pp1

Again, Neptune is now considered the farthest planet because….

until 2006, when scientists removed Pluto from the list of planets, Pluto was the 9th and

farthest planet.

However, scientists have placed it in a new group called “Dwarf Planets”.

Page 15: Pp1

PlutoPluto is not like the other outer planets.

It is small and made up of ice and rock.

Pluto has at least 3 moons, one moon it almost as large as Pluto itself.
