Cruze’n with Holden

Fieldays visitors had the fi rst close-up look at Holden’s new mid-sized offering - the Cruze - the

rest have to wait until next month.Cruze is Holden’s small-size replace-

ment for the Astra and Viva and indica-tions it will out-spec its opposition.

The Holden Cruze is built at the GM-Daewoo plant in Gunsan, South Korea, but the design and development process is fully international.

The starting point was GM’s new Delta global platform that is the founda-tion for not only Cruze, but also the new Opel/Vauxhall Astra range, the Chevro-let Volt and a host of other vehicles.

Importantly the Delta forms the basis for a new car that will go into production alongside Commodore and the other VE car derivatives at Holden’s Elizabeth

plant near Adelaide from next year. This is a critical move for the Austral-

ian car industry. Holden has confi rmed the rumours

that a hatch will be not only built, but designed, in Australia.

It may be wishful thinking, or simply provide a catchy headline, but the name Torana keeps cropping up in Aussie me-dia speculation.

The models available in New Zealand next month are the 1.8 litre petrol and 2 litre turbocharged common rail diesel. Gearboxes are a choice of fi ve speed manual or six speed automatic with manual mode.

Economy starts at 5.7l/100km for the diesel manual and peaks at 7.5l/100km for the petrol automatic.

Price will start at just $27,000.

Standard features for the CD includeelectronic stability control, ABS, trac-tion control, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution, six airbags, au-tomatic headlamps, steering wheel audio controls and cruise control.

The CDX (petrol only) gets 17” alloy wheels, front fog lamps, leather steer-ing wheel, leather appointed seats with heated front seats, rear parking sensors, body coloured door handles with chromeinserts and interior sports accents.

SAFETY FIRSTA bonus for the small car is a fi rst up

fi ve star rating for safety in the AustralianNew Car Assessment Programme test.

The result puts the Cruze at the top of the safety ratings alongside the new Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon.

Handling package for Mazda2By Dean Taylor

Mazda has given the already great Sports version

of their small ‘2’ car a bit of extra ability in the form of a performance handling pack-age.

The S version now becomes an SP thanks to Mazda New Zealand, who premiered the concept at Big Boys Toys 2008.

The Mazda2 SP pack-age was then submitted to Autocar magazine for a three-way comparison with the Toyota Yaris RS and Suzuki Swift Sport - the report pub-lished in January rated the Mazda best of the three.

With the proliferation of sports or limited versions of s m a l l car of-fe r i ng , Mazda f e l t the SP package would enhance their ‘Zoom-Zoom’ styling.

The Mazda2 ZS already receives front fog lights, rear spoiler, 16” alloy wheels and a six stacker CD system over the base model.

The 16-valve DOHC 1.5 litre engine develops 76kW of power and 137Nm of torque.

The SP adds 17” Wolf S35 alloys fi nished in black chrome, with matching wheel nuts and branded centre caps, performance Toyo low pro-

fi le tyres, h e a v y duty, low-ered King

springs, window tints, new rear light treatments, Mazda2 logo carpets and stainless

steel scuff plates and chrome indicator surrounds and ex-haust extension.

The locally devised variant is recommended for the black or dark grey models and is available through selected

dealers.The driving experience

of the model provided by Wilksbrooke Motors’ is ter-rifi c.

The stickier tyres and slightly lowered stance give

the little Mazda that extra edge in corners that makes for exciting driving.

And the overall make-over achieves the aim of producing a sportier and more aggres-sive looking package.

Mazda right behindKidsCan Telethon

Mazda New Zealand is getting behind The Big Night In Telethon on TV3 on August 8 to raise money to enable the charity KidsCan to support Kiwi kids living in poverty.

As the exclusive vehicle sponsor of the event, Mazda will be offering viewers the chance to bid on the all-new Mazda3 which will be up for auction on www.sella.co.nz.

The company is also supplying the event organisers with Mazda3 vehicles for promotional use in the lead up to the event.

“Mazda is proud to be part of Big Night In Telethon 09, an event which gives New Zealanders the chance to come together and directly help Kiwi kids engage in their education and become the very best they can be,” aid Andrew Clearwater, managing director Mazda New Zealand.

“These are values which fall close to the aspirations of our own Mazda Foundation and for this reason we are delighted to be in a position to support KidsCan in their efforts toward levelling the playing fi eld for disad-vantaged children.”

It’s been 15 years since New Zealand’s iconic Tel-ethon fi rst appeared on our screens raising money for childrens’ causes and preparations are now underway to make The Big Night In Telethon 09 a spectacular television event to remember. A variety of the country’s sports stars, including the KidsCan Stand Tall ambassa-dors The All Blacks, along with actors, comedians, mu-sicians, community and cultural performers are already on board with more to be announced.

The Big Night In Telethon will screen from 7pm, Sat-urday August 8 until 6pm Sunday August 9 on TV3.

ABOUT THE KIDSCAN STANDTALLCHARITABLE TRUST

The KidsCan StandTall Charitable Trust (KidsCan) is a national charity dedicated to ensuring Kiwi kids less fortunate than others have a bright future.

KidsCan provides three targeted programmes - ‘Rain-coats for Kids’, ‘Shoes for Kids’ and ‘Food for Kids’, which remove the barriers preventing fi nancially disad-vantaged children from getting the most out of their education and life.

Back to future for JesseJesse Wiki is a young

man on a mission to do well in the world

of Supercross - for himself, his family and his spon-sor Peter Glidden Honda (PGH).

His goal is to take out a New Zealand senior title, and unusually he has re-turned from a stint riding for a major factory team to his roots where he believes he can perform better.

Wiki started riding at the age of two-and-a-half when his dad bought him his fi rst motorbike. He was hooked.

As a teenager he rode for PGH for six seasons and in 2003 he won the New Zealand Junior Supercross Championships. Good re-sults continued and he was offered the factory ride.

He has been No. 3 in NZ Supercross for the past three years and was fourth last year in Open Moto-X.

About three months ago he approached Peter Glid-den with a proposal to ride again for the local team.

The 22-year-old believes the more hands-on approach of the local team will be good for his career, and that he can take on, and beat, the factory riders.

He rides every weekend, either competing or practis-ing. Main goal is to win the Open New Zealand Moto-X title. The series is run over four rounds of three 20 minute races per round in October until December.

He will also compete in

the New Zealand Supercross events early in the New Year and any other meets he can get to.

Mr Glidden says he ad-

mires a young man with such a desire to do well, but mainly it is because Wiki has incredible family support that he is pleased to once

again be his sponsor. He says Wiki is passion-

ate about the sport - so look out as Te Awamutu will have a new national champion.

My pride and joy Mazda B1600

MAZDA fan Ryan Padman in John Dixon Motors workshop, where he is a mechanic, with his rotary powered B1600 ute and an assortment of other old-school Mazdas he either owns, looks after or are in the family.

Marque of choice for John Dixon Motors mechanic Ryan Pad-man is Mazda - the rarer the

style the better. This year he fi nished his 1978 Mazda

B1600 ute project, started when he of-fered a TradeMe seller $600 while on holiday in the South Island.

Ryan paid the cash and drove the ute home from Christchurch.

It looked pretty good when he got it, but it turned out about seven layers of paint of varying colours were holding some of it together.

The previous owner was a builder and it also had a toolbox fi tted.

“It was ugly,” says Ryan.He had the layers of paint blasted off to

reveal the extent of the damage and found lots of rust to fi x.

But he’s glad he went to the trouble, be-cause between himself and mate Ben Ken-dal the metal work was straightened and given a coat of that fashionable ‘brown’ paint.

Ryan had been thinking brown all along, but it seemed no-one agreed with him.

In the end he went with his gut instinct, and he likes it.

Back at the workshop was a badly rusted RX7 waiting to give away its 12A engine and box.

With new engine mounts, gearbox cross member and a bit of reshaping the fi rewall, the rotary slotted into the ute.

Drum brakes all round weren’t going to stop the newly re-powered ute, so a set of B2000 front discs and callipers were fi tted and given some extra stopping power thanks to a Hillman Hunter brake booster.

The deck was given a new lining and the interior got a brand new old-school make over.

Ryan engaged CH Allen to redo the dash, headlining, seats and door cards in a mix of brown, tan and cream to tie eve-rything together.

He had the really old Mazda logo (from

the 30’s he thinks) included in the seat and door card design.

Naturally the ute was lowered and then he played with a few sets of wheels before going with his preferred option - Isuzu Big-horn rims with mandatory white walls.

Plans are to take the ute to a few shows and events over summer, so it hasn’t seen a lot of time on the road yet.

Ryan’s daily runner is a Mazda Genteel (929) which has been lowered and fi tted with white walls.

He also drives a 1990 Series 5 RX7 - believed to be a factory race version.

The car has factory lowered suspension and a twin exhaust. It was purchased with a

roll cage, although Ryan thinks that prob-ably was retro-fi tted.

He’s played a bit with the turbocharger, but otherwise its standard.

The workshop wagon is a 1983 Mazda 626 with its standard two-litre engine.

He’s been helping a mate get his rotary powered 626 road legal and his sister Rose has the ‘baby blue’ 1977 Mazda 808.

Many people might think enough is enough, but Ryan keeps his eyes out for any other Mazdas to add to his collec-tion.

He says the right Mazda 121 or RX5 might attract his attention, and he still likes the Series 1 to 3 RX7s.

It can be hard to keep up with repayments when something unexpected happens like you lose your job, or you become ill or

injured and can’t work. When something unexpected happens you

have the right to apply to the creditor for re-lief under the hardship provisions of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act. This means you can ask to reduce your payments or take a payment holiday.

Remember, reducing your payments or tak-ing a payment holiday will mean that you end up paying more over the long term, and it will take you longer to pay off your loan.

You can only ask for hardship provisions if you are up-to-date on your payments, so you need to act quickly. Also you can only apply for the hardship provisions if the loan is for personal or household use. So if the car was bought for business use it won’t be covered.

If you took out payment insurance when you got the loan then that may cover your situation. Check the terms and conditions in your insur-ance policy.

If you are having trouble with your payments,

but you don’t qualify for the hardship provi-sions you can still:QTalk to the fi nance company about reduc-

ing your payments or taking a payment holi-dayQGet advice from a budget advice serviceQIf things are really tough, fi nd out more

about a summary instalment order, no-asset procedure or bankruptcy from the Insolvency and Trustee Service (www.insolvency.govt.nz or 0508 467 658).

Keeping your car might not be the best for your situation, so look at all your options. Con-sider returning the vehicle to the fi nance com-pany. You can ask them if this is possible. It will save you the cost of having it repossessed. You will still owe money but the debt won’t include extra penalty interest and repossession costs.

For advice about your options call 0508 BUDGETLINE (0508 283 438) to fi nd your nearest budget advice service or to speak directly to a budget adviser.

You can fi nd out more about how to keep your car at www.keepyourcar.org.nz, or your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

Car payments too tough? There are alternatives

Got what it takes to be a leader in road safety, or know someone who does? If so, the organising com-

mittee of New Zealand’s premier road safety awards programme wants to hear from you soon.

Entries close on July 8 for the 2009 Road Safety Innovation and Achievement Awards.

The winner in each award category will re-ceive a cash prize of $2500, and a repre-sentative from each winning entry will receive free travel to attend the awards ceremony in Auckland.

Entries are open to individuals, organisations and communities for innovations and outstand-ing contributions to road safety.

Awards will be made in fi ve categories this

year: Education, Community, Organisations, Vehicle-Based and Engineering.

If you can show proven innovation, achieve-ment, commitment and sustainability in your road safety initiatives, let organisers know and earn recognition for your efforts.

Since 2003 these awards have recognised road safety innovations initiated by individu-als, organisations and communities.

The awards are funded by the NZ Trans-port Agency, and administered by an organ-ising committee with representatives from the Automobile Association, Police, NZTA and ACC.

New Ranger series - built Ford tough

Ford’s Ranger utility lineup has reached 20 variants with the ad-dition of a XL four wheel drive

Double Cab Chassis model.Primarily targeted at the rural commu-

nity, the XL 4WD double cab chassis has the fi ve-seat capacity with the fl ex-ibility of a drop side, fl at deck body.

The new model is available in manual transmission only. The 3.0-litre four-cyl-inder Duratorq diesel engine features a variable geometry turbocharger which virtually eliminates turbo lag, provides a user-friendly torque curve and promotes smoother and faster acceleration.

The engine produces 380Nm of torque at 1800rpm with 115kW of power developed at 3200rpm. The en-gine has 90% of maximum torque avail-able from just 1400rpm and achieves competitive fuel consumption of 9.2

litres per 100km.Ranger ’s rear suspension, carefully

tuned for improved ride and handling, has been strengthened to support the vehicle’s class-leading hauling and tow-ing capabilities with longer leaf springs and a new stabiliser bar. The Ranger is one of the most capable vehicles in its class with a maximum payload of one tonne and the ability to tow up to 3.0 tonnes.

The vehicle boasts driver and pas-senger front and side airbags, side in-trusion beams, four wheel ABS brakes with EBD and passive anti-theft system (PATS) as standard equipment.

Comfort and convenience are also catered for with power windows, power mirrors, power door locks with remote central locking, air conditioning and a 12 volt DC accessory socket.

The Ford FG Falcon utility lineup has been extended with the only

dedicated LPG fuel option available in the Kiwi ute mar-ket.

Both dedicated LPG XL and R6 Supercab variants are powered by the E-Gas 4.0-litre DOHC DI-VCT in-line six-cylinder engine which pro-duces 156kW of power at 4750rpm and 371Nm of torque at 2750rpm. Ford says the LPG engine provides an ideal alterna-tive fuel option for high-mileage ute customers.

The payload is one tonne - is almost twice as much as the Falcon XR6 Ute - with the maximum braked towing capacity the same at 2300kg.

The XL model is a four-speed column shift automatic with a three-seater confi guration. The fi xed centre seat provides room for a third passenger and has been repositioned since the previous LPG Ute model.

When not required the cen-tre seat can be folded down to provide a centre armrest and cup holders.

The R6 version has bucket seats and features a four-speed auto-matic with sequential sports shift. With 16” alloy wheels, the R6 has body colour side mirrors, rear bumper and side rockers and also sports a single oval chrome exhaust fi nisher and fog lamps.

Both utes have cruise control, climate air conditioning, power windows and mirrors and CD and audio.

Need an excuse to get Sky

By Dean Taylor

Apparently not everyone loves the TV show Top Gear, but plenty do - whether it’s re-runs or new shows.

So now there is a new option to see even more Top Gear - it’s on UKTV, which is only available from Sky Digital.

Now it’s only running Series 2 re-runs, but so what.In fact it should be fun to look back - after all the team is

younger and its the fi rst series with Captain Slow. The Stig will be wearing black and the reasonably priced car is the Suzuki Liana. And of course it features the irreverent, witty and unbiasedly (not sure about that - have they ever liked

anything Japanese?) honest team that takes cars to the limit and beyond to fi nd out if they are any good or not.

Series 2 includes some hot car buying tips for those with more sense than money, a look at the luxury end of the car market, contenders for the worst car and the fastest supercar,an episode on Jaguars, an attempt to break the land speed record while towing a caravan, driving safety, a hot hatch race, the future of car design, and a race to decide who is the fastest evil megalomaniac in the universe.

Regular features include test-drives on the aerodrome track, a Love/Hate Board, the Greatest Car Ever and Star In The Reasonably Priced Car. I’ll be watching.

Tractor a winner

TRACTOR FACTOR by Matamata College student Rebecca Jones was one of the more unusual creations in this year’s National Fieldays Ag Art Wear - but it got the DriveBy vote obviously. It seems it also got the judges’ votes as it was the winning entry in the Under 21 section. Tractor parts in the creation included steering wheel, grille, lights, inner tube, mud fl aps, exhaust pipe and front wheels.
