PPI PVC Range Composition NSF Version 24.1

Issue Date: June 2011

Foreword

The NSF version of the Plastic Pipe Institute's (PPI's) PVC Range Composition is a subset of those ingredients accepted by PPI and published in PPI Technical Report TR-2, PPI PVC Range Composition Listing of Qualified Ingredients*. The formulation for PPI, and all applicable PPI policies, are officially presented as PPI Technical Report TR-2, and the PPI Technical Report TR-3, Policies and Procedures for Developing Recommended Hydrostatic Design Bases and maximum Recommended Hydrostatic Design Stresses for Thermoplastic Piping Materials*. For a brief history of the PPI PVC Range Composition, the reader is referred to the “Foreword” of PPI TR-2. As of the date of issuance of this document, the NSF policy regarding the PPI PVC Range Composition is given in NSF International Certification Policies for Plastics Piping System Components.

Note 1: The use level of an NSF/ANSI Standard 14 Listed ingredient shall be in accordance with the main body of the PPI PVC Range Composition, but shall not exceed the maximum use level indicated in the Official NSF Listing for the designated ingredient. A primary function of titanium dioxide is to protect PVC resin from possible adverse effects by the ultraviolet (UV) light in sunlight. Experience indicates that the 0.5 phr minimum provides suitable UV protection for extended outdoor storage of PVC pipe but may not be adequate for permanent protection for installations that are subject to continual UV exposure. For such cases requiring greater UV protection, larger quantities of titanium dioxide should be employed.

TABLE 10B – FUNCTIONALLY EQUIVALENT INGREDIENT PACKAGE

This table lists the percentage of the maximum allowable usage that each ingredient contributes when used at its maximum use range. Additional amounts of other approved ingredients can be added, but the total combined percentage cannot exceed 100% of the allowable. The addition of other Functional Equivalent Ingredients is not allowed. See the example following this table.
