0How have you changed over the years? How have you stayed the same? Come up with two lists ( a t-chart) of as many things you can think of regarding how you have changed and stayed the same during your life. Think: physical appearance, personality, likes, dislikes, etc.

Page 11: [PPT]The Giver · Web viewFinal Giver Assignment Memory Book Assignment sheet: Questions? Checklist/note taking space Daily rough drafts Should keep up with good copies each night

Graphing Memorable Events0 Brainstorm the ten most significant things that have happened in

your life (good, bad, painful, sad.)0 Summarize each one with a phrase.0 For example, if you moved to Pennsylvania from California and you

feel that this was one of the most significant events in your life so far, write a phrase such as “Moving to PA from CA.” Other ones might look like “Grandpa passed away”, or “Got our dog Maple.”

0 After you have determined your 10 events, you will place your events on a graph. The graph has two purposes. The first purpose is to show the many things that have happened to you during your life. The second purpose is to mark the positive or negative feelings that you have associated with each event

0 EVENTS SHOULD BE IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER OF HOW THEY HAPPENED!!!

0 You may do this on graph paper (by hand) or on the computer

Page 12: [PPT]The Giver · Web viewFinal Giver Assignment Memory Book Assignment sheet: Questions? Checklist/note taking space Daily rough drafts Should keep up with good copies each night

Graphing Memorable Events0 -Using a ruler and graph paper, make an “L” shaped graph

0 -Along the x-axis (the bottom) label your 10 events in chronological order

0 -Along the y-axis (the left side) label the numbers from 0-10

0 -Make sure the events and the numbers on the axes are evenly spaced and also make sure you give your graph a title

0 -After you have set up your graph, you are going to rate each event in your life on a scale of 0-10, 0 being a very negative event and 10 being the most positive event

0 All events do not need to be a different number, but try to get a good mix of positive and negative

0 -Plot a point at each event next to the number you rated the event

0 -After all 10 events have been rated, connect the dots in order from left to right

0 -Once the dots are connected, you should have successfully created a line graph of 10 significant events in your life and the feelings you associate with each event.

A Wedding to Remember…

0 This picture of my sister, Daisy, mom, and I was taken on September 29, 2012. It was taken by my Dad at the reception of my best friend Lauren’s wedding. We are standing outside of a barn on a farm in Bedminster, PA. It was cold for September and I remember asking my dad to stop taking pictures because I didn’t want to miss out on the appetizers. This picture was taken to help us all remember this big moment in our lives, especially since Daisy and I grew up with Lauren and her sister as our best friends…so close we call each other sisters. It was a beautiful day and I remember being so happy for her!

“Brace Face”I’m walking into the orthodontist right now to get my braces on. I’m feeling a

little nervous. I’m still waiting to be called into the room. My mom and I are talking now. I ask her how long it will probably take. She says a while. Now, I finally get called back. I tell my mom to come with me. So now I’m sitting in the room with all these things in my mouth. I’m managing to ask my mom to get my phone from the car. I’m waiting, now for the orthodontist to put on my braces.

Now, first, they are putting on the glue. My tongue is being held back by this red squishy thing so the glue doesn’t get wet and I’m swallowing so much saliva. It’s been about 1 ½ hours now and the orthodontist and his assistant are still working in my mouth. I am playing a game on my phone. And now I am sending a picture to a few of my friends of the things in my mouth. Finally, the orthodontist is putting the wires in. It’s finally over now after about 2 ½ hours.

I am leaving the orthodontist and my teeth hurt a little. Since there is a Wawa right next door, my mom takes me to get a milkshake. My mouth is still numb so the milkshake is dripping down my mouth and I can’t feel even feel it. I tell my mom about the weird feeling and we are cracking up the whole ride home.

Foreword

0A foreword is a short piece of writing found at the beginning of a book or other piece of literature. This is usually written by the primary author of the work.

0Often, a foreword will explain some connection between the writer of the foreword and the story or book.

0It allows the author to tell the reader about the purpose of the book.

Page 28: [PPT]The Giver · Web viewFinal Giver Assignment Memory Book Assignment sheet: Questions? Checklist/note taking space Daily rough drafts Should keep up with good copies each night

Foreword0 Use the first three paragraphs on your memory book

assignment sheet as a guide to write a summary of the memory book assignment in your own words.

0 It should be personal and it should be at least one solid paragraph long (4 or more sentences.) Your goal is to explain the assignment so that when you look at your memory book many years from now, you will remember why you made it as well as be reminded of this current time in your life.

0 In order to do this, you might think about discussing what a memory is to you, and how the memory book connects to Lois Lowry’s The Giver, as well as the class you are reading it, and year involved with this assignment

Page 29: [PPT]The Giver · Web viewFinal Giver Assignment Memory Book Assignment sheet: Questions? Checklist/note taking space Daily rough drafts Should keep up with good copies each night

Example 1

0 A memory is something you can hold onto and it teaches you wisdom for your life. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, which we read in Miss Van Ness’s Reading class, there are no memories, no color, and no choices in life in the community Jonas is a part of. Throughout his training as Receiver, Jonas realizes the importance of memories. So, this book is stuffed with a pack of memories (that’s why it is called a Memory Book). It lets me cherish all the funny, stupid, and highly embarrassing memories for the rest of my life. Keep note that only some of my life experiences are enclosed in this book. Only the positive stories and important things that my family has bestowed on me.

Page 30: [PPT]The Giver · Web viewFinal Giver Assignment Memory Book Assignment sheet: Questions? Checklist/note taking space Daily rough drafts Should keep up with good copies each night

Example 2

0 A memory is the power or process of remembering and the storing of things remembered. The reason for making this memory book is to help myself remember memories from my childhood when I am older. This is just like the book, The Giver, which we finished reading in my 7th grade Reading class with Miss Van Ness. The people in this community do not have memories. Eventually, the main character Jonas, leaves the community because he wants to live a life with memories and wants the ones he received to flood back to the people. When I am older I don’t want to forget any memories because they are all special. A memory is something that should be treasured forever. This book will help me remember special memories and people when I am older.

How I want to be remembered…

0 How would you like to be remembered by others?0 Could relate to school, your career, your family, friendships, etc. 0 Should relate to future goals and ambitions 0 Should be at least 3 sentences long and explain how you want to

be remembered and why.Example:0 I want to be remembered as a teacher who made a difference

in the lives of her students. This is my hope because I put great effort and time into doing everything I can to help my students succeed. I hope that they can each take something away from my class as a memory of their own.
