DEFINITIONS

Public Relations (PR):

‣ The methods and activities employed to establish and promote a favorable relationship with the public.

Marketing

‣ The activities of a company associated with buying and selling a product or service. The umbrella over public relations and advertising.

Advertising

‣ The act or practice of calling public attention to one’s product, service, need, etc.

DIFFERENCES

▸ Marketing is the umbrella over PR and advertising.

▸ Advertising is all about the product or service you are selling.

▸ In advertising you pay for the media compared to public relations the media is earned.

▸ Public relations come from a third party so they hold more credibility than advertising does since it is paid for by the company.

▸ Marketing doesn’t take part in public affairs.

▸ Marketing is the more understood than the others.

MARKETING FUNCTIONThe are 7 main functions used in marketing:

‣ Financing

Allowing a customer to put down a loan on a product or service that will be paid back over time.

‣ Information Management

Example is sending out surveys for a product or service.

‣ Pricing

All depends on supply and demand such as ticket prices for sport events through out the season.

‣ Product and Service Management

Changing a product over time to fit customers wants and needs.

‣ Promotion

A company giving out something for a limited amount of time such as getting something for being the first 100 in a line.

‣ Selling

Helping a customer while in the store to make it more likely they will make the purchase.

‣ Distribution

Create a online store or contact stores to sell product/service.

Working with news outlets to create a relationship with them. Example: Editorials about your business.

Opening communications between employees such as team building.

Dealing with the government on behalf of an organization.

▸ Financial Relations

Dealing with firms and interest groups in the organizations industry.

Must stay with the trends to makes sure they keep selling.

Creating a want for the product so more are sold.

Is the ones who you consistently sell your product to and that you want to continue selling to.

Is set depending on the market that the product is in.
