PDU1: Hair save unhairing/liming 0% 100% Reduction of pollution load in liming wastewater while adopting hair save unhairing 32% 37% 66% 61% 0% 20% 40% 60% 80% COD BOD Sulphide Total suspended solids In the liming/unhairing bath, hair is loosened and not allowed to dissolve and loosened hair is filtered out in hair filtering machine About 1.8% of hair on the weight of raw hides is filtered from Indian origin buffalo hides The removal of hair help reduce quantity of sulphide PDU2: Water mixing and measurement Visual judgement of water consumption as adopted in several small sized tanneries leads to higher consumption levels by 50 to 200 percentage points Three types of measurement options demonstrated - water flow meters, electromagnetic flow meters and automatic water mixing cum addition systems Measuring water reduced the water consumption by 20 to 30% Reduction of quantum of pollutants like COD and TDS by 15% and 10% in post tanning waste streams PDU3: Solar water heating system Capacity: 7000 litres per day @ 60 0 C on annual average Area: 192 m 2 Type of collectors: Evacuated tubes Energy savings: 725 GJ/annum CO 2 reduction: 97 tonnes per annum PDU4: Solar air heating system Capacity: 75000 kcals/hour on annual average Area: 270 m 2 Type of collectors: Aluminium capsulated chamber Energy savings: 847 GJ/annum CO 2 reduction: 114 tonnes per annum PDU5: Processing chilled hides Reduction in TDS in soak liquor: up to 40,000 mg/l Reduction in TDS: minimum of 300 kg/t Potential for TDS in Kanpur cluster: 90 t/d Wetblue produced from chilled hide processing PDU6: Desalting Dusted salt recovery: 60 to 90 kg/t of raw material Reduction in TDS by 25000: mg/l Overall TDS reduction: 15-20% PDU7: Lime liquor recycling system Recovery of relime liquor: 80% out of 125% float Reduction in water consumption less by 800 l/t Savings in chemicals-lime 0.3- 0.5% Annual savings in water consumption up to 600 m3 Rainwater harvesting Rain water catchment area is approximately 3500 m 2 and per season about 7564 thousand gallons of rain water filtered from 47 different points is estimated to be deposited to the under-ground water
