| PRACTICAL GUIDE4 | ORGANIZERS & PARTNERS

With its 2000 students, the HEIG-VD is the largest school partner of the HES-SO (University of Ap-plied Sciences, Western Switzerland). The campus of the HEIG-VD is based in Yverdon-les-Bains and is perfectly integrated into the economic environment.

Scientific studies with practical applicationsAt the HEIG-VD, theoretical knowledge is continuously linked with its implementation. The tea-ching provided by professors mainly from the economic sector and industry, encourages students to adopt a practical approach. They progress gradually to engineer or economist status, ready to create, conceive, innovate, control, frame or even to found their own company.

A recognized proximity with the economic environmentIn the spirit of University of Applied Sciences policy, the HEIG-VD considers the transfer of knowledge to the economic environment as particularly important. The HEIG-VD Institutes are actively involved in the economy and industry through new product development, innovative solutions and management practices. The students are associated in this research through their practical diploma projects, whose topics are mostly proposed by companies. Once this training is acquired, it is possible to approach professional life with solid arguments.

| PRACTICAL GUIDEWELCOME TO SWITZERLAND

Territory and populationWith an area of 41’258km2, Switzeland is a relatively small country. The Jura mountains, the Swiss Plateau and the Alps are the three basic topographical areas. With its 7.4 millions of inhabitants and an average density of 183 people per km2, Switzerland has an important density. The popu-lation is however unequally distributed on the territory: only 10% of its popultation lives in the alpine area.

History and constructionSwitzerland is a federation of relatively autonomous cantons, some of wich have history of confe-deracy that goes back more than 700 years. Switzerland’s 1848 Constitution made it into a federal state, giving it a central authority that counterbalanced the power of the individual cantons. Some issues, such as foreign policy, are now solely in the hands of the central governement.

For historical reasons, Switzerland’s official name is still the «Helvetic Confederation» (in Latin: Confoederatio Helvetica) from which the country’s international abbreviation, CH, is derived. However, a confederation is an alliance of autonomous entities. Since 1848 Switzerland has been a federation: a grouping of entities with a central authority.

The word Helvetic refers to the Helvetians, one of the many Celtic tribes living at the time of the Roman conquest in what has now become Switzerland.

Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons. There are German-speaking and French-speaking cantons, one Italian-speaking canton and cantons in which both German and French are spoken. One canton (Graubünden) has three official languages: German, Italian and Rumantsch. Their population and size vary greatly. The canton of Geneva is virtually made up of only one city. Some other cantons, like Uri, consist almost entirely of mountains and valleys.

Each canton has its own constitution, its government, its parliament, its courts and its laws, though they must, of course, be compatible with those of the Confederation. The cantons enjoy a great deal of administrative autonomy and freedom of decision-making. They have independant control over their education system and social services, and each has its own police force. Each canton also sets its own level of taxation.

PRACTICAL GUIDE | YVERDON-LES-BAINS AT A GLANCE

Wellness in the Yverdon Thermal SpaThe spa in Yverdon-les-Bains perpetuates an ancient tradition of care and wellbeing. Located on Upper Lake Neuchâtel, the town has a varied historical heritage evidenced by its old town and its museums. The quality of the waters in Yverdon-les-Bains has been reputed for 1,500 years: the sulphur spring water gushes forth at 29°. The spa and its care centre offer stay fit or get back into shape programmes as well as personalised programmes for elite sportspeople. It has three pools, two of which are outside, whirlpools and massage jets providing wellness and serenity to its visitors.

Activities to do and places to visitBearing witness to its long history on the shore of Lake Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains has a unique site consisting of 45 Neolithic menhirs, Celtic vestiges probably dating back to 5,000 B.C. Its castrum, a medieval castle built by the House of Savoy, and a town centre full of medieval and neoclassical buildings also testify to its long history. The History Museum in the castle illustrates this past. Whereas the Swiss Fashion Museum, Maison d’Ailleurs – a science fiction museum – and Espace Jules Verne transport visitors to creations of the 21st century. In addition to its building heritage, Yverdon-les-Bains has preserved an exceptional na-tural reserve: La Grande Cariçaie, the largest lakeside marshlands in Switzerland revealing their flora and fau-na at the foot of Champ-Pittet castle. 40 km of shores alternating with parks line the lake between Yverdon-les-Bains and Morat.
