All parents are invited to participate in the parent supplement survey of the Illinois 5Essentials Survey beginning on December 4, 2019. The survey will be open through December 20, 2019. This survey gives feedback in five key areas. In addition, this feedback is an important indicator on the Illinois Report Card in which we received Commendable this past school year. We need at least 20 percent participation of parents to respond to the survey. While the parent data will not be made public, the parent report will enable us to make considerations based on the response given. District 301 administers this survey annually in order to determine trends that can be used for school improvement practices. Please consider supporting our continual improvement efforts by logging onto https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ from December 4th through 20th, 2019 and completing the survey for Prairie View Grade School. Our first and second grade hallway will soon be transformed into the “The Giving Mall.” The mall will be open from Monday, December 2nd through Friday, December 13th. Prairie View students will have the opportunity to collect and bring donations for local charities. Students will visit each store front to help with donations. Some of the local charities include the Burlington/Hampshire food pantry, Elgin Rescues, Toys for Tots, Elgin Community Crisis Center, Epworth United Methodist Church (EUMC), Elgin Community Crisis Center, and Elgin YWCA. Our students have always enjoyed the mall festivities and the opportunity to experience compassion and goodwill to others. All donations will need to be in by Noon on Friday, December 13, 2019 for pick up. Please dress your child appropriately to be outside when the weather permits. Snow and moderately cold weather will not keep the children inside. All children will participate in outdoor activities if the outside temperature with wind chill is 0˚ or above. Snow pants and boots are required for children to play in the snow. Please send your student with an extra pair of clothes in the event they get wet they are able to change into dry clothes. The health office does not have any spare clothes. It is also important that your child has a pair of gym shoes at school. If for some reason your child forgets their shoes, as they are wearing their winter boots to school, we will make every attempt to have something warm and dry here. How to Raise a Reader by Pamela Paul and Maria Russo is a wonderful guide for parents. The book is divided into four sections -- baby through teen. Each section offers ideas for parents to develop rituals around reading, building a family library, ways to engage a reluctant reader, and other practical ideas and advice to foster a love for lifelong reading. There is also a fifth section that recommends books by titles, themes, reading levels, etc. How to Raise a Reader is a good companion to Jim Trelease's Read Aloud Handbook.
