Pra$rodh  Sansthan  Bhadesar,  Chi2orgarh

 (Amit  Sharma/[email protected])

 Aadharshila

Residen$al  School  for  Girls

Background  •  Pra$rodh  Sansthan  is  working  with  Tribal  community  of  Bhadesar  district,

Chi2orgarh  (Rajasthan)  since  2004-‐2005

•  Its  an  offshoot  of  Prayas  which  has  been  ac$vely  advoca$ng  Tribal  Rights  since  over  few  decades  with  diverse  ini$a$ves    –  Tribal  land  rights  –  Cast  discrimina$on  and  Khat  Andolan  –  Women  rights  and  SHG  mobiliza$on  –  RTI  and  MNREGA  Advocacy  –  Food  Rights

•  Pra$rodh  Sanstan  focuses  primarily  on  girl  educa$on  and  women  rights/awareness,  with  flagship  project  seeded  through  AfE-‐SV  support  in  November  2008

•  The  organiza$on  has  philosophical  roots  in  tribal  rights  movement,  but,  with  a  singular  focus  and  belief  in  women  being  the  change  makers  in  the  society

Objec$ves  &  Goals  •  Upli^  and  Empower  backward  and  marginalized  tribes  through  educa$on  and

awareness      •  Prepare  and  mo$vate  young  girls  as  change  makers,  not  only  to  empower  but  to

influence  the  next  genera$on  of  community!

•  Bring  awareness  about  educa$on  in  the  community  with  expecta$on  that  it  will  in  turn  lead  to  inquisi$veness  and  awareness  in  general  –  educa$on  is  a  big  enabler!  –  Mo$va$on  is  to  make  children  ecologically  &  socially  aware  and  get  some  basic  literacy,  instead  of

a2aining  grades  and  class  a2endance

•  Bridge  the  divide  between  the  first  genera$on  learners  and  the  government  schools/programs  –  Use  self-‐paced/self-‐mo$vated  learning  techniques  that  is  suitable  to  the  environmental  reali$es

•  Leverage  government  schemes  &  programs  and  bring  policy  benefits  to  the  community  such  programs  are  meant  to  –  Not  to  run  a  formal  school  but  to  act  as  a  bridge  for  mo$vated  children  to  get  access  to  the

government  schools

Objec$ves  &  Goals  •  Residen$al  School  for  Girls  was  started  in  late  2008  with  AfE-‐SV  funding

•  Employ  alternate  educa$on,  self-‐paced/self-‐mo$vated,  learning  method  for  first  genera$on  learners  from  tribal  community

•  Train  girls  to  Grade-‐V  equivalent  level  and  enroll  mo$vated  students  into  Kasturba  Gandhi  Balika  Vidyalaya  for  Girls  –  KGBV  is  a  part  of  central  government  scheme  under  which  residen$al  higher  secondary  level

schools  are  opened/operated  across  the  country

•  Make  students  socially  &  ecologically  aware;  and  build  strong  long-‐term  partnership  with  their  communi$es/families  –  Address  rampant  social  issues  e.g.  child  marriages,  illiteracy  through  empowerment  of  girl  child

Project  Background  •  Residen$al  school  in  Amarpura,  Bhadesar  Dis2.,  Chi2orgarh

•  School  operated  in  a  rented  gated  facility  with  brick/concrete  boundary  walls  ,  mud-‐reinforced  floor  and  $n  shed  and  open  courtyard  (see  pictures)

–  Two  ceiling  fans  in  the  shed

–  Two  Bathrooms,  Three  toilets,  two  water  reservoirs  and  three  water  tanks

•  Large  40x30^  hall  with  a  35  cot  capacity  for  children  to  sleep.    Addi$onal  room  for  staff  that  has  spillover  capacity

–  Minimal  infrastructure  investment,  although  rental  facility  has  caused  some  minor  issued  in  the  past

–  Individual  cots  have  been  changed  to  bunk  beds  with  local  help  that  consume  rela$vely  less  space  and  more  organized

•  Two  full-‐$me  residen$al  female  teachers,  one  cook  and  one  helper,  and  one  coordinator  (one  of  the  project  funders)

•  Small  library  with  donated  books  and  spare  workbooks,  journals,  and  newspapers

Project  Discussion  •   Project  uses  alternate  self-‐paced  learning  model  based  on  methods  and  tools  from  Degantar

•   Learning  model  is  based  on  a  mix  of  scheduled  classes  and  self-‐paced  group  ac$vi$es

•   State  curriculum  is  used  for  measuring  and  evalua$on  of  learning  level  specifically  to  meet  Grade-‐V  requirement

•   Teachers  iden$fy  mo$vated  students  and  coach  them  specifically  for  gradua$on  and  admission  into  KGRS  program

•   Formal  evalua$on  and  class  structure  along  with  self-‐paced  model  is  cri$cal  to  ensure  transi$on  into  formal  school  environment

•   Residen$al  school  model  is  not  to  isolate  children  from  there  home  environment  but  to  give  them  space  for  self  explora$on  and  group  learning

•   Environment  of  the  school  and  pedagogy  is  to  ensure  preserva$on  of  the  cultural  and  social  engagement  –  language,  ecology  etc.
