When reading trough the results of the sixteen alumni teams, I was impressed with the results the various teams had produced. Many teams had successfully overcome difficulties in communication. All groups displayed a good grasp of the scenario technique. But nearly each team had chosen its own way of presenting the scenario: There were personalized accounts, fictitious interview situations, dialogues or radio features set in the target year 2033, and many other ways of presenting the scenarios. And yet, most of the scenarios had a sound basis in the problem analysis for the base year situation.

Many groups had also translated their scenarios into concise and well produced videos. When reading the texts and the watching the scenarios, I could sense that the teamwork had been fun for the teams, and in a way this creative atmosphere was still contagious, when I looked at my computer screen.

Prof. Martina Schäfer, Center for Technology and Society, TU Berlin:

Getting from data of the present situation to possible future scenarios is not an easy step but it surely is a method that will be helpful for all of you for your further careers. This is especially true for visioning different paths towards Sustainable Development: We always have to be aware that we still have choices and that our future depends on decisions which are taken today! All of you have taken up this challenge with great engagement and it was not easy for us to choose 3 of you as best teams.

We hope that all of you have gained experiences that made participation in the Project worthwhile and got to know new friends all over the world. These worldwide networks will be very important in the process of realizing a sustainable future! The awareness that North and South, East and West have to take up this challenge together and in fair cooperation is one of the most important aspects regarding sustainable development.

First prize evaluation

Einhard Schmidt-Kallert, Professor of Spatial Planning in Developing Countries at TU Dortmund University

In the end within the jury we found it easy to agree on the number one entry: T12 “GreenRoad”, the team working on “Traffic congestion in Tegucigalpa” is the winner. Based on a sound analysis the team managed to write two convincing scenarios, using the format of a fictitious radio feature. But in addition to this, they juxtaposed these scenarios with quantitative projections of some key parameters to the target year 2033, thus demonstrating that the situation depicted in the scenario is attainable within the time horizon of 20 years.

The scenarios were then adequately translated into a video. Finally they produced an extra document entitled “Ideas for Target Scenario Implementation”, which helps to bridge the gap between the scenario and implementation on the ground. It also serves as an additional reality check for the scenario. Congratulations to the group for an excellent piece of work!

•Publishing within the next weeks // in the long run

Prof. Martina Schäfer, TU Berlin: We hope that all of you will continue to work on sustainable futures in your country – if only half of the target scenarios become true, our planet has a good chance to survive! Wishing you all the best for your future – stay motivated!
