Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the

kingdom of God before you." Ouch. If Jesus weren't speaking the truth, this would seem like a nasty insult. To the ears of the chief priests and

elders to whom he was speaking, it was as good as saying, "You're bigger sinners than the biggest sinners around." Jesus had a way of cutting to the heart of matters. In this case, he was calling out these

religious leaders for their stubborn resistance to the revelation of God. At least the "sinners" heard and heeded John the Baptist's message of

repentance. But those who considered themselves too righteous to repent were missing the opportunity to experience the healing power of mercy. As we know, God the Father wants to extend mercy to his children. Just as any good parents want what's best for their children, God wants us to

see the truth and follow it. But he won't force our hand. God always respects our freedom. He invites, encourages, assists, and persists in

drawing us in, but ultimately the choice is ours. One way God invites us to spiritual healing is through the sacrament of reconciliation. This is a perfect example of God's desire to extend forgiveness. But if we don't

take advantage of this gift, we miss the grace that it offers us. Let us beware of thinking that we aren't the kinds of sinners that really need to repent. If we don't acknowledge our need for God's forgiveness we, become like the chief priests who closed themselves off to God's

healing. It doesn't matter how far we may have fallen-this is why Jesus specifies that even "big" sinners can enter the kingdom of God-rather, what matters is that we have hearts open to

recognizing and responding to God's love.

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

A WONDERFUL WEAPON IN YOUR ARSENAL “Never will anyone who says his Rosary every day be led astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign with my blood.” ~ Saint Louis de Montfort

Today, October 1st, is the beginning of the Month of the Rosary, one of the two months each year that are dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This month is called the Month of the Rosary because the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary falls on this coming Saturday, October 7th.

I remember one of my theology professors telling us one time that the rosary was essential for our toolboxes. One of my classmates looked really confused because he thought the professor was speaking about a literal toolbox. The student could not imagine why we would need a rosary in a box with our wrenches, screwdrivers, et cetera.

After chuckles all around, the professor told us that the rosary belonged in our spiritual toolbox. It was an important tool, he said, and one that needed to be used on a regular basis in order to keep ourselves in good repair.

St. Louis de Montfort’s statement, at face value, may look a bit extreme. “Never will anyone who says his Rosary every day be led astray.” Never? St. Louis de Montfort was so confident in that statement that he said that he would sign it in his own blood.

Yet, it is true. The rosary is a wonderful tool that, if used regularly, cannot help but keep us close to God. The whole importance of St. Louis’ statement lies in the proper praying of the rosary. If the rosary is something that someone uses just because he or she has to do it, it will be meaningless. That person can be led astray because that person is probably being distracted by all sorts of things while saying the rosary anyway.

However, if a person truly prays the rosary, that person will be meditating upon deep mysteries of the faith. That person will be invited to enter, more deeply, into the life of Jesus: His teaching, His struggles, His suffering, His passion, His death, and His victory over death in the resurrection.

Prayed properly, the rosary will help a person cling to the path that leads to the Kingdom. Prayed properly, a person cannot go astray. That person will be focused on Jesus to the point of ignoring any other distraction.

This is a good month to find your rosary, to get it out, and to pray it. This is a good month to teach the rosary to your children. This is a good month to consider all the wonders of a loving God!

FAITH ACTION: Pray the rosary today. If possible, pray it together as a family.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A young student wrote the following note to her priest: “Dear Father. I really liked your homily at Sunday’s Mass. Especially when it was finished.”

“The greatest disease in the West today is not TB or leprosy; it is being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. We can cure physical diseases with medicine, but the only cure for loneliness, despair, and hopelessness is love. There are many in the world who are dying for a piece of bread but there are many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty — it is not only a poverty of loneliness but also of spirituality. There's a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.”

    ~ St. Teresa of Calcutta

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY Today, Sunday, October 1st, is Respect Life Sunday. This day begins a Respect Life Month. As Christians, we are called to promote, protect, and defend life in all its stages from conception to natural death. The only way that we can truly save our world is by promoting a culture of life.

St. Pope John Paul II used to talk constantly about the great evil of the culture of death that is among us. We have seen it play out in many areas of life: abortion, euthanasia, doctor-assisted suicide, capital punishment, infanticide, racism, genocide, war, terrorism. The list can go on and on. God did not create us so that we could destroy each other. On the contrary, He created us so that we could love one another, so that we could nurture one another, so that we could grow together as a family of love and faith ultimately walking hand in hand into the Kingdom of God. Quite frankly, that is not possible if we continue to destroy one another. We need to look out for the plight of all so that we can do everything possible to minister to their needs. Only then will we begin to rebuild a culture of life.

If you missed having your picture taken at St. Thomas More, there are several other

ways to be part of our directory:

1 We’d like every parishioner to be in our new Parish Directory. We have scheduled three more photo session dates at

    St. Thomas More. Don’t miss it! October 26th, 27th & 28th

Schedule as soon as possible by going to www.stm-church.com. Dates will fill quickly. Directory print date: November.

2 Submit a photograph. There will be a $10 charge per photograph submitted. Please submit your photograph or electronic file to the parish office with the fee. If you are submitting a professional photo, your photographer will need to sign a release form.

3 If you are homebound, you can schedule to have your picture taken at home for free. Please contact the Parish Office at 219-836-8610 and someone will contact you to arrange.

Everyone with a picture in the directory will receive a free directory.

If you had your picture taken and did not order any additional pictures, please come to the

Parish Office to pick-up your photo. The Parish Office is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Thursday, October 19, 2017 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
