Worship Gathering · September 18, 2016

Whether you are a first-time guest or have been gathering with us for some time, we are glad you are with us today. We are a family of Jesus-followers who gather each week to worship God and scatter each week to reflect God. Thanks so much for worshipping with us. Please join us in reflecting God throughout the week.

Please complete a blue guest card from the back of the worship center seats and place it in the offering tray as it passes you. We would love to be able to contact you to say hello. If you would like to know more about being a Jesus-follower, being baptized, or becoming a part of Lafayette, you are invited to meet with those in the prayer room just after the sermon. Turn left as you exit the back of the worship center; the prayer room is on the right just past the kitchen.

1 Spiritual formation Sunday classes resume today. Kyle Johnson will teach The Doctrines of Missional Living for adults. Many are aware of classical Christian doctrines (like Incarnation and Trinity) and familiar with missional living. Have we considered how these doctrines guide the way we live? Each session will explore a specific doctrine and its relationship to the mission of Jesus and our missional living. The class meets in the worship center and begins 15 minutes after the worship gathering concludes.

Bedrock an adult discussion toward developing a panoramic view of the story of God and a method of telling that story continues two more Wednesday nights at 7:00pm in the fellowship hall.

2 Small Group Ministry Small Group ministry has been an important part of church life at Lafayette for many years. The launch of the new cycle of Growth Groups has been delayed, so stay tuned for a new timetable for this year’s Growth Groups.

3 Bible Study for Women A new Bible study for women kicks off on Tuesday, September 20. If you would like to get involved, see Sarah Buehrer, Carol Keim, or Mary Lou Enix.

4 Welcome to Lafayette Welcome Caleb, Lauren, and Easton Martz to our church family at Lafayette. Look for their information soon in the church directory.

5 Fair Haven Children’s Home Caring for widows and orphans is important to Lafayette. We regularly provide children at Fair Haven Children’s home with cards, correspondence, and holiday gifts. Six new children are available. To sponsor a child, see Sue Bond.

Lazarus died. Jesus raised Lazarus. Lazarus’s new life caused quite a stir. In fact, so many Jews were listening to Jesus because of what they were seeing in Lazarus, the chief priests contemplated killing Lazarus. John tells us, “It was because of Lazarus that many of the Jews had deserted them and come to believe in Jesus” (John 12:11 CEB). That’s what happens when people see new life. They want to know about the Jesus that brought life from death. May our new lives be so attractive that people begin listening to Jesus.— Bob Clark

Welcome to Lafayette

The Lesson of The Butterfly

A man spent hours watching a butterfly struggling to emerge from its cocoon. It managed to make a small hole, but its body was too large to get through it. After a long struggle, it ap-peared to be exhausted and remained absolutely still. The man decided to help the butterfly and, with a pair of scissors, he cut open the cocoon, thus releasing the butterfly. However, the butterfly’s body was very small and wrinkled and its wings were all crumpled. The man continued to watch, hoping that, at any moment, the butterfly would open its wings and fly away. Nothing happened; in fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its brief life dragging around its shrunken body and shriveled wings, incapable of flight. What the man – out of kindness and his eagerness to help – had failed to understand was that the tight cocoon and the efforts that the butterfly had to make in order to squeeze out of that tiny hole were Nature’s way of training the butterfly and of strengthening its wings. Sometimes, a little extra effort is precisely what prepares us for the next obstacle to be faced. Anyone who refuses to make that effort, or gets the wrong sort of help, is left unpre-pared to fight the next battle and never manages to fly off to their destiny.
