Prayer to Saint Andrew
the Apostle
O Glorious Saint Andrew, you were
the first to recognize and follow the
Lamb of God. With your friend Saint
John, you remained with Jesus for
that day, for your entire life, and now
throughout eternity. As you led your
brother Saint Peter to Christ and
many others after Him, draw us also
to Him. Teach us to lead others to
Christ solely out of love for Him and
dedication in His service. Help us to
learn the lesson of the cross and to
carry our daily crosses without
complaint so that they may carry us to
Jesus.
Amen.

MASS INTENTIONS
ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
PARISH EVENTS
The Month of May has begun and we are still celebrating Easter. We are now invited to honor
Mary our Mother and begin to look forward to the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Within our communities
we would have been looking forward to celebrating with our young children preparing for
Sacraments and coming to the close of the Academic Year.
Recently, I had mentioned to some people how our homes have become our new places to gather
and Pray! Think about this, since March 16th we have not been able to enter the House of God, yet
the Mass and many other styles of prayer have found their way into our homes via computer,
television, internet and our phones. Perhaps we can find that Cross we received for a sacrament, a
new beginning of life’s journey or find our books of Scriptures like the Bible or Spiritual Journals
and enjoy the source of Hope, Comfort and His loving presence in our homes and lives.
I invite us to “Stand for our Faith” and when life gets too hard to stand ….. Kneel! Interesting
when one reflects and creates an image of the Blessed Mother, we always have her standing. The few
exceptions are when we see Mary after his Birth, as she knelt before her newborn Savior and then as
she sat with her only son’s Body after he was taken off the Cross.
Within this month of May I invite us to pray and ask for Mary’s Unending Mantle of Love for all
of us! Perhaps if you are out for a walk/ride do not forget that we have Statues of Mary in Charleroi,
Donora and Monongahela that we can visit. Wherever and however I invite each of us to continue to
pray, even if it is listening to music or the gift of nature outside, let us all Listen to God who is there
listening to us.
Furthermore, in our prayers let us pray in Thanksgiving for everyone to stay safe and try to honor
the many who are out there serving all of our needs. From the Truck drivers who deliver the supplies,
to those in the stores, to the many in the Health Field still offering comfort, our many first responders
who provide safety, even to the many who are in the banking field and all of our utilities, the list can
go on, from our Holy Father who Shepherds us to the those who have positions in all of the
leadership roles.
On this Fourth Sunday of Easter the church invites us to pray for All
Vocations. I invite the Parish of Saint Andrew to say a little prayer
for those discerning their Vocation in Life----I believe that we have
many young men and women in our parish who would be great as a
Religious or Clergy. Never miss the opportunity to plant the seed
into someone’s thoughts! We are grateful for Father Jerry who celebrated our
Liturgy for our community, he will celebrate his 46th anniversary of Priesthood
Monday, May 4th. Many blessings to you Father Jerry for your presence in our
community and to the needs of the many at Mon Valley Hospital.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020
THOUGHTS BY REV KEV
Our days of facing this Crisis continues and what we thought was just a few weeks is now longer. Like in
today’s readings we are reminded that the path as followers of Jesus can be simple, but it is more complicated
than we ever dreamt up.
We have listened to what is being told to us and yet there is no guarantee that it’s going to be over soon.
What is guaranteed is that no matter how long and what we may have to face, we are never alone. Today, the
Church celebrates Good Shepherd Sunday, let the Risen Lord be that Good Shepherd who will seek us out
when we begin to stray, pulling us back when we want to rush ahead, soothing our hearts and souls with a
voice that is as familiar as our own breath and if we would just take the time to stop our worries and put aside
our fears and stop rushing for everything to go back to normal.
The Gospel of John states that Jesus said “Amen, Amen, I say to you I am the gate for the sheep.” This im-
age of Jesus as the Gate that protects each of us and does not let that thief come to harm us is so helpful for us
in this Crisis.
Many times, you would see Jesus like that of a Bedouin Shepherd who wears young lambs over their shoul-
der so that the lambs learn the shepherds voice and the shepherd knows the smell of his sheep. They use rods
to protect their flock from predators and with their crooked staff they pull down branches for food, nudge
newborns toward their mothers, and guide their sheep on the right path.
RUMINATIONS BY FR. PAT
Last week I mentioned that the Easter Season lasted for 50 days. I also mentioned that, although we cele-
brate in time 50 consecutive days, we are, in reality, celebrating one day, Easter.
For Christians the Easter Season lasts until the Feast of Pentecost, which is 50 days after Easter. For the
Jewish People, 50 days after the Passover, they celebrate the Feast of Pentecost, or Shavuot. So, our Christian
Holiday actually comes from a Jewish Holiday.
There are two purposes to Shavuot for the Jewish people. It originally was a celebration of the grain harvest
of early Summer, giving thanks to God for His bounty. Shavuot involved a pilgrimage to Jerusalem of Israel-
ite males who would bring the gifts of the First-fruits to God. The second significance of Shavuot was the giv-
ing of the Torah to the Jewish People. The giving of the Torah was a far-reaching spiritual event—one that
touched the essence of the Jewish soul for all times. The Jewish elders have compared it to a wedding be-
tween God and the Jewish people. Shavuot also means “oaths,” for on this day God swore eternal devotion to
us, and we in turn pledged everlasting loyalty to Him.
Why 50? 50 is the number of jubilee or deliverance. It is the issue of 7 x 7 +1 or 7 squared + 1, and it
points to deliverance and rest following on as the result of the perfect consummation of time. The meaning
comes from their notion of the use of numerology. It is the number of Perfection (7) multiplied by Perfection
(7), plus 1 for good measure.
• On the fiftieth day after leaving Egypt, God met Israel at Sinai, = the first Pentecost (this Greek
word means "50th day") [Exodus 19:1; 14-16].
• Fifty is grace = 5 multiplied by perfect order = 10.
• In the fiftieth year, known as a Jubilee year, all debts were to be forgiven, all Hebrew slaves
were to be freed, and all land returned to the original owner. [Leviticus 25:8-19].
Huh? Think of it this way. We have lucky 7, correct? Don’t we also add “one for good measure” when
“punching” a child for the number of years of his/her birth? There are 7 days in the week, the Perfection of
God’s creation. Multiply that by itself intensifies the meaning and significance. Adding 1 more gives extra
significance.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 3, 2020
FAITH FORMATION/FAMILY CONNECTION/KIDS CORNER
FAMILY CONNECTION
Even though we have less experience with sheep and shepherds today in our society, we can still identify
strongly with the image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd and as the gate for the sheep. Psalm 23 remains a pop-
ular and favorite psalm for prayer. In the image of the Good Shepherd, we know ourselves to be protected and
cared for by a loving God.
As your family gathers, ask what each person knows about sheep and shepherds. Recall that shepherds and
sheep have a close relationship. Sheep will only follow their own shepherd; they recognize his voice and will
not follow a stranger. The shepherd’s job is to protect his sheep. In some ways, the relationship between the
shepherd and his sheep is like that of a parent and child. Read together this Sunday’s Gospel, John 10:1-10.
Talk about how Jesus tells us that he is the gate for the sheep. The sheep enter the protection of the sheepfold
through the gate. In Jesus we find protection and abundant life. Conclude by thanking Jesus for being our
Good Shepherd and by praying today’s psalm, Psalm 23.

PARISH EVENTS
Dear Parishioners,
This past week you received a letter from me for several more reasons than to ask for your
participation in the Parish Share Program.
Because of various circumstances, with the merger of our parish, we were not able to obtain the
necessary cards that you found in your mailing in a timely fashion prior to the Pandemic. So, after
consulting with the Finance Council, we did want to send a letter to every parishioner. This letter, like
that of the individual phone calls that were attempted to each parishioner, is meant to let you know of
our prayers and gratitude for your presence in our community.
Considering we are now one Parish, with all our funds and operating expenses combined, our goal for
the Parish Share Campaign is not as much as we expected.
The Parish Share goal for 2020 for St. Andrew the Apostle is $143,172.
Since we have become one parish you have received envelopes and among the many options is a
Parish Share Envelope. As noted in the letter you can continue using this envelope or if you want to
make a pledge you can still do so. We are asking that you let us know by completing the pledge card
and turning it into our offices.
Again, this information helps us to update our records in the Parish Data Base and fulfill the
necessary obligation to reach our Parish Share goal for 2020 of $143,172.
To the many who have used their envelopes, we have already collected $7,707. Again, if you
remember we are asked to fulfill this assessment, and if we can, any extra money collected can stay
here for our parish needs.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.
Again, we will continue to pray for one another in this Pandemic and as soon as we are given
permission, we will open the doors of our Church.
As the Easter Season moves quickly, I would invite everyone to begin to look forward to
Pentecost by praying!
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your
love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of
the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant
that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations,
Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

ST. ANDREW THE APOSTLE
Renewal of Baptismal offers us a twofold sense of Hope!
From the baptismal fonts is born the People of God which transcends all the natural or human limits of nations, cultures,
races and sexes. “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.” (CCC1267).
There is a special grace in relationships founded on faith, it is the grace to help you support one another in prayer and the
grace to encourage one another when things get difficult. But just like the grace of Baptism, this grace of community is like a
seed that needs to be planted and nourished before it will bear fruit.
This Easter has given us the awareness of how much we all miss that Community, the opportunity to be renewed by the grace
of Eucharist the Body of Christ. Yet, I also have found and I have heard from many that this Easter offered a new source of
Hope and Faith, I would invite everyone to try this as we continue in this new lifestyle.
Every morning when you wake up, tell Jesus that you believe in his Resurrection, Tell Him and more important tell yourself
that because of our baptism we have been raised up with Him. Proclaim, both to Him and to yourself, that you are forgiven
and that you have access to God, and that you are part of His body here on earth.
May God bless each of us abundantly as we place our faith, hope and trust in God and look forward to being a part of the
community of believers in our Parish!
Secondly, I also believe that we have all faced moments of doubt and fear with the anxiety and the unknown, reflect on those
first three questions as we renew our Baptismal promises and who we can stand firmly against.
Take a moment and ponder how even in these days we need to trust in God and turn away from the Devil:
Do you renounce sin, so as to live in the freedom of the children of God?
I do.
Lord, all I want is to live in the freedom you offer me.
I will reject all injustice, all violence,
all that disrespects the dignity of all human life and be able to see the good in everyone.
Do you reject the lure of evil,
so that sin may have no mastery over you?
I do.
Lord, I admit that some evil has a hold on me;
it is attractive, it has such powerful rewards.
Lord, I renew my commitment this day
to turn from that evil
and from letting any disordered attachment,
any empty promises master me,
and try to separate me from you.
By this promise, I commit myself
to greater courage in acting justly
and refusing to let unjust systems and structures
numb my conscience or dull my heart.
Do you reject Satan,
the author and prince of sin?
I do.
Lord, as I renew my promises
that accompany my becoming one with you
in the baptism of dying to sin and rising to life,
I know that an Enemy tries to
tempt me to sin and to many dark patterns,
I now promise to you,
and to my sisters and brothers
who depend upon my fidelity,
that I renew my commitment
to reject that Enemy,
and all his ways of subverting
your reign and the coming of your kingdom.

The Food Bank Committee
We would like to say a special thank you to our “Head Donut Lady”, Carol Pollock.
Carol has been heading up the donut team for several years at St. Andrew the Apostle
(formerly at St. Damien of Molokai). This required a lot of her time and talent, which
she shared with the parish freely. Carol and her husband John will be moving to the
state of California later this month. We wish them well on this new journey and may
God continue to bless them in their new home.
St Andrews “Help Center” now reconnecting with
our parish food bank.
This year for Mother’s Day, we’re asking for your help
for a new ministry “Parents in need”. Our parish is
located in communities with plenty of single parents and
not only do we assist them with our parish food bank, but
we’d like to begin helping these folks with children’s
clothing, diapers, wipes, infant food or formula, basically
things that can help ease some of the anxiety’s that come
with being a single parent.
There will be donation boxes set up on the back porch of
the rectory in Mon City, on the front porch of the rectory
in Charleroi, and on Fr Kevin’s front porch at the rectory
in Donora.
As always, your support is so appreciated by the lives
you have no idea you’re changing.
Thank you, and may God’s Blessings be with you during
these days of the pandemic, and please know of our
continued prayers during these days and times.
