Before You Arrive Applying for your student visa (Tier 4) to come to the UK: When you apply for a general student visa you must include a confirmation of acceptance of studies (CAS) number,

PUIC will send your CAS details when you confirm your unconditional offer of a place to study and pay your deposit/tuition fees.

The CAS number will be included in a letter called a ‘CAS statement’. This will also include important information needed for your Visa application.

You can only apply for your Visa three months or less before the start of your course.

The start date is published on your CAS statement. If you plan to arrive on a different date you must let us know. This is very important as we must inform the UK Visa and Immigration authority (UKVI) if you do not arrive on time.

You will need to report to the Plymouth Post Office, with your entry vignette in your passport and decision letter, to collect your visa before you are able to enrol.

When your Visa is issued it will include your CAS number as supplied on the CAS statement.

If you change your mind and have decided to study with another institution you must inform PUIC before you arrive in the UK so we can cancel your CAS with the UKVI. You can then re-apply for a Visa with a CAS from a different sponsor.

Changes to your student registration status: PUIC must inform the UK Visa and Immigration authority of any students who have an entry clearance Visa under the Points Based System (PBS) rules and fail to arrive for the start of their course, are withdrawn from the course, defer or suspend their studies or fail to attend for significant periods of time. Further information regarding the student visa Points Based System can be found on the websites below. We advise that you check the websites regularly for up to date information.

British Embassy/ High Commission http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/

UKCISA (Council for International Student Affairs) http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/

Meeting Immigration staff at the airport: When you arrive at a UK airport, you should be prepared to answer some questions about yourself, including where you will be staying and what you intend to do during your time in the UK. You may also be asked to undergo a brief, routine health check by an airport doctor, which may include an X-ray. Afterwards you will be required to return to immigration control. Please ensure that you are fully aware of all relevant details of your studies and accommodation before departing for the UK. If you are unsure of any aspect of your offer or accommodation information, please contact your education agent or PUIC staff.

Living in Plymouth Plymouth City centre has a good array of independent shops and boutiques side by side with all the high street shops that you would expect to see in the UK; all of the major high street banks and building societies; numerous restaurants, cafes, bars and public houses; dentists; and several doctor’s surgeries. Major supermarkets, such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s have stores in the city, usually with a wide range of foods, and there is a good range of speciality shops and restaurants. More information on central Plymouth shopping facilities, activities and night life is available at Student Support on arrival.

Public transport The public transport system in the UK consists of the over-ground rail, ferries and buses as well as the famous underground trains in London. The cost of public transport depends on the type of ticket you buy and the distance that is to be travelled. There is a network of frequent and reliable local buses, and these provide excellent access to all parts of Plymouth. Further information, including student bus passes for Plymouth, can be obtained from: www.plymouthcitybus.co.uk For UK and European coach travel, timetables and further information are available from: www.nationalexpress.com. Living in Plymouth Employment The majority of international students are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week under the terms of their student visa during the semester (check the conditions of your visa). At vacation times you can work full-time. Information for students on working in the UK can be found at: www.ukcisa.org.uk Students should not rely on part time jobs to fund living expenses or pay tuition fees. Any income earned from part time jobs should be seen only as a supplement to established sources of funding.

National Insurance Everyone who works in the UK must pay National Insurance (NI) contributions. If you have a part-time job offer or can provide evidence that you are actively seeking work you can apply for a NI number. Please contact Student Support for further information on how to apply for an NI number once you arrive at PUIC.

Medical Insurance You should ensure you have adequate medical insurance to cover medical costs should you fall ill, and the additional possible costs resulting from illness. These can be substantial, and include: • Lost fees if you are unable to complete your course • Costs of returning home if a relative is ill • Costs of a relative visiting you in the UK if you fall ill • Cost of returning to your home country for treatment Even if you are entitled to free NHS treatment whilst in the UK, you should still ensure that you have adequate medical insurance which covers the above costs which could be incurred if you or your family are unfortunate enough to become ill or have an accident. If you have medical insurance in your home country, check whether you can extend it to cover your stay in the UK, as well as looking at options available from UK insurers, such as NavInsure.

Out and About Superb scenery The countryside around Plymouth provides some of the finest scenery in the West Country. As well as Dartmoor and the mellow farmland of Devon and Cornwall, the Tamar Valley - with its superb river creeks and estuaries - is not only an important haven for wildlife, but is also a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Waterfront The Barbican and The Hoe are two of Plymouths most popular Waterfront Areas. The Barbican, home to the National Marine Aquarium, the Mayflower Steps and the studio gallery of the late eccentric painter Robert Lenkiewicz, is an area of eclectic and vibrant cafes, bars and restaurants. Perhaps the Hoe is more your cup of tea, where there is always a great deal of activity on the water, including frequent warship movements, ferries going and coming from France and Spain, fishing trawlers as well as larger and smaller sailing boats. The Fastnet yacht race ends here, as well as being host to the annual two-day UK Fireworks Championships in August attracting tens of thousands of spectators.

Plymouth Pavilions Plymouth Pavilions is the largest entertainment complex in the city of Plymouth and is only 10 minutes’ walk from the University campus. Attracting major international performers, the Pavilions has something to offer for everyone. For information on upcoming shows and events, please visit: www.plymouthpavilions.com/prod-productions.asp

Plymouth Life Centre The £46.5 million Life Centre is one of the country's leading centres of sporting excellence. As a partner, Plymouth University has secured exclusive use of some of the top class facilities within the Life Centre as well as membership discounts to all Plymouth students. For more information on the facilities that the Life Centre has to offer, please see www1.plymouth.ac.uk/getactive/Pages/Life-Centre.aspx

Other Activities Plymouth has a lot to offer both visitors to the city and residents alike. Year-round activities ensure that the city remains a thriving location across all seasons. With a proud maritime tradition, Plymouth has managed to attract world-class events such as the Americas Cup and will build on that with our very own Marine Festival in September 2012. More information about what’s on can be found from the following websites: www.barbicanwaterfront.com www.visitplymouth.co.uk

Out and About Recreational Activities: Plymouth students have the advantage of studying in one of the UK’s most beautiful and diverse regions, nestled between the spectacular Devon and Cornwall coast. As far as recreational activities go; Plymouth is second to none. The city boasts a vibrant student orientated nightlife with many clubs, cinemas and bars in the city centre. If clubbing is not your thing then the city of Plymouth is also known worldwide for water sports, including surfing, windsailing and other water-sports clubs run by both students and local residents. Alternatively if you have more of an interest in Plymouth’s cultural history then you may want to undertake one of Plymouth’s naval tours, take in a show at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal or simply go for a hike along the many beautiful rural areas around Devon.

Action on the pitch and court If you prefer your spectator sports we have a number of highly successful teams in the city. Plymouth Argyle play their football at Home Park, Plymouth Albion play rugby at Brickfields and the Plymouth Raiders Basketball team can be seen in action at Plymouth Pavilions. Information on Plymouth Argyle can be found at: www.pafc.co.uk/page/Welcome Information on Plymouth Albion can found at: www.plymouthalbion.com Information on Plymouth Raiders can be found at: www.plymouthraiders.com

Dartmoor Only a few miles from the city is Dartmoor National Park, one of the finest and largest National Parks in Britain and the last great wilderness in southern England. The landscape is unique with its high heather covered moors, ancient standing stones, hut circles and stone clapper bridges. You can walk, cycle or ride on horseback to enjoy this extraordinary area at its best.

When you arrive

As a student looking forward to beginning your studies in the UK this year

you will now start preparing for your journey. As part of your preparation

we want to make sure you have everything you need to get through the UK

border as securely and quickly as possible. The following advice explains

some of things you can do to help with this:

1. Make a note of a suitable UK contact including full name, address and a phone number which will be required when you complete your landing card.

2. Ensure you complete your landing card before you meet the Border Force officer in the UK.

3. If you carry your passport in a protective wallet, please take it out before you present it to a Border Force officer.
