Understand the basics of GPS Guidance

GPS Guidance is a comfort and productivity investment GPS Guidance helps farmers to enhance productivity and reduce costs. GPS Guidance solutions employ satellite signals to accurately guide the tractor or combine, even in bad weather or dusty field conditions. Each field operation has a GPS Guidance tailored solution for the best results.

GPS Guidance is a matter of repeatability • The simple signal from a GPS satellite works well with car navigation systems but is not accurate enough for precision

farming operations, that need precision up to 2.5 cm.• Farming GPS Guidance is based on real time corrections of the GPS signal calculated either by a central control

station, a server or a movable ground radio station, and then sent to the GPS Guidance-enabled equipment.• GPS Guidance accuracy is calculated on pass-to-pass basis (relative accuracy measured at 15 minutes intervals) and

on year-to-year basis (capacity to repeat the same rows up to a week, a month, a year later).

Three areas to be consideredThree areas have to be considered when building a GPS guidance solution:

• The correction signal will determine:- The accuracy of the GPS receiver, from 1 meter down to 2.5 cm.

RTK correctionsReal Time Kinematic (RTK) is a highly precise technology that results in 2.5 cm year-to-year accuracy.This accuracy can be achieved with three communication technologies, depending upon the customer.

RTK Radio1 The base station is setup on a known position and receives

raw data from the satellites. The rover receives the same data.

2 By comparing the received position to its known actual position the real time error can be calculated.

3 This error is then transmitted via UHF radio to the rover unit.

Accuracy: base station <10 km from rover <2.5 cm absolute.

PLM Connect RTK (PRS)1 Rover receives the raw data from the satellites.

2 Rover sends its approximate position to the Central Processing Facility (Data center) via GSM, GPRS, or 3G

3 Data center predicts and calculates the best solution based on the location of the rover by using multiple base station triangulations.

4 These errors are transmitted to the rover unit by Internet GSM.

Accuracy: based on the density of the base stations, >1.5 cm and no height control.

EZ-Steer® motorThe EZ-Steer® motor receives electrical signals from the EZ-Steer® controller and converts them to precise commands that the vehicle’s steering system uses to keep the vehicle on track.You can resume the control of your machine at anytime by turning the steering wheel.

Two solutions are possible:

Autosense™ steering sensorThis unique steering sensor measures highly accurate wheel angle information on all terrain and sends it to the Navigation Controller II.

It sends T3™ terrain compensated corrections (roll + pitch + yaw) and precise steering instructions to the vehicle by using guidance and GPS information from the display.

Optional Accessories

Roof bracket: GPS antenna are delivered with a magnetic roof bracket. Fixed brackets are also available to install the GPS antenna always at the same position on the roof.

Transfer kit: The transfer kit gives the possibility to use the same display, navigation controller and GPS antenna on a second machine if autoguidance ready or fitted with a platform, hoses and fitting kit.

Vehicle interfaceReceives navigation commands from the Navigation Controller II which controls the vehicle’s steering when engaged.

Important notice regarding RTK base station ordering processAccording to European laws, all radio transmitters must be setup with their final frequency of use before shipment from their manufacturer.This means that each RTK base station ordered through CNHi Parts & Service will have to be set up with the correct frequency or frequencies that the base station owner has been granted from his local communication governing agency.

Each dealer must therefore send the appropriate Frequency Configuration Sheet to [email protected] all cases, it is necessary to follow this process to receive the RTK base set correctly otherwise, it will impact delivery.Contact your Parts Sales & Service Manager for more information.
