Starrett angular measuring tools rangefrom vernier protractors reading to 5 minutes of a degree, to regularprotractors reading to a degree and easilybeing able to estimate to 30 minutes.
There are also special purpose angularmeasuring gages such as cutterclearance gages, draftsman protractors, drill point gages and also a combinationprotractor and depth gage series.
All of our angular measurements are indegrees and minutes. When setting upand comparing true angles to the highestdegree of accuracy, we recommend usingStarrett-Webber Angle Gage Blocks (see Gage Block section). These areavailable in two styles, down to anamazing 1/4-second accuracy. WhatStarrett-Webber Master Gage Blocks areto length measurement, these blocks areto angle measurement.
There has been an effort by some in theinternational community to have anglesbe described by the use of radians. Theradian is the plane angle between tworadii of a circle, which cut off on thecircumference an arc equal in length to the radius.
The formula is: 180º = pi radiansTherefore, 1 radian is equal to 57.2958º,or 1 degree is equal to .017 radians.
We do not find any problems withmeasuring angles by using the traditionalstandard of degrees, minutes, andseconds, and find this to be acceptedworldwide.

Precision Universal Bevel Vernier ProtractorsNo. 359 Serieswith fine adjustmentGraduations in degrees thru 360º
These tools are designed for precisionmeasuring and for laying out angles. Theprotractor is one of the most valuable anduseful tools for the kit of every goodtoolmaker, inspector or machinist.
Readability Features◆ Satin chrome finish on all reading
surfaces – eliminates glare and resists rust
◆ Sharp, machine-divided graduations
Ease-of-Handling Features◆ Available with hardened 7 (175mm)
or 12 (300mm) blades which can berotated to the desired angle andadjusted to the desired length
◆ Both the dial and the blade can belocked independently
◆ An acute angle attachment is available◆ Flush surfaces on the base permits use
on height gages◆ One side of the tool is flat so it can be
laid on paper or on the work
Accuracy Features◆ Machine-divided graduations read to 5
minutes (1/12 of a degree) and accuracyis finer than can be read
◆ The most convenient, ultra-sensitive fineadjustment for precision setting

Starrett Universal Bevel Protractors with Vernier can be accuratelyread to 5 minutes (5) or 1/12 of a degree. The dial of the protractoris graduated both to the right and left of zero up to 90 degrees. TheVernier scale is also graduated to the right and left of zero up to 60 minutes (60), each of the 12 Vernier graduations representing 5 minutes. Any angle can be measured, and remember that theVernier reading must be read in the same direction from zero as theprotractor, either left or right.
Since 12 graduations on the Vernier scale occupy the same spaceas 23 graduations or 23 degrees on the protractor dial, each Verniergraduation is 1/12 degree or 5 minutes shorter than 2 graduationson the protractor dial. Therefore, if the zero graduation on theVernier scale coincides with a graduation on the protractor dial, thereading is in exact degrees, but if some other graduation on the
Vernier scale coincides with a protractor graduation, the number ofVernier graduations multiplied by 5 minutes must be added to thenumber of degrees read between the zeros on the protractor dialand Vernier scale.
Example: ★ In the illustration above, the zero on the Vernier scale lies
between the “50” and “51” on the protractor dial to the left ofthe zero, indicating 50 whole degrees. Also reading to the left, the 4th line on the Vernier scale coincides with a graduation onthe protractor dial as indicated by the stars and therefore 4 x 5minutes or 20 minutes are to be added to the number ofdegrees. The reading of the protractor therefore, is 50 degreesand 20 minutes (50º 20).

Cutter Clearance GageNo. 459 0-30º Range
This is a special gage that makes itpossible to accurately and quicklydetermine correct clearance angles formaximum in cutter efficiency.
Benefits◆ Eliminates guesswork and elaborate
gaging equipment◆ Highly versatile – this tool will measure
clearance angles up to 30º on helical, straight, side or inserted tooth millingcutters, straight or helical end mills,T-slot cutters, metal cutting saws, andbroaches
◆ Can be used on cutters from 2-30(50-760mm) diameter and also oncutters and end mills from 1/2-2(12.7-50mm) if teeth are evenly spaced
◆ Hardened for long life
Use◆ This gage is made of the finest tool
steel, hardened for long life, and isextremely easy to use. It consists of aframe graduated from 0-30º and havinga fixed foot, an adjustable sliding foot onthe beam extension of the frame, and ablade which is adjustable angularly andperpendicularly to contact the clearanceangle of any cutter tooth
◆ To use the gage, the feet are positionedon two alternate teeth of the cutter withthe gage at right angles to the cutteraxis and the adjustable blade, which isset at the correct clearance angle. This shows at a glance when the cuttertooth is ground to the desired angle (see photo)
Furnished in attractive, protective case. Packedone in a box.

◆ Double graduations from 0-180º inopposite directions permitting the directreading of angles and supplementaryangles
◆ The back of the tool is flat for ease ofuse
◆ The blade can be locked firmly at anyangle by the lock nut
◆ Satin chrome finish for ease of readingand resistance to rust
No. C183This protractor is exactly the same as theNo. C19, except that is has a rectangularhead, thus providing four convenientworking edges.

Steel ProtractorNo. C182 0-180º
This protractor has the same type of headas our No. 19 but it is designed fordraftsmen, civil engineers, and others whoneed a protractor that will allow thedrawing of any number of radial lines atany angle through a common center. This isespecially useful for someone in the fieldwho can only carry a minimum ofequipment. Weight is approximately 3 ounces.
To use the protractor, the fulcrum point ispressed into the drawing at the requiredcenter. This is done by removing thefulcrum point from the hub, pressing it inthe drawing, and then placing theprotractor hub over the fulcrum point. Thedesired angles can then be layed out.
The fulcrum point can be left in the tool.Press the whole tool down so that the pointpenetrates the drawing. (However, this willmake it harder to find the center.)
◆ When not in use, the fulcrum point canbe drawn back into the hub andfrictionally held in a safe position
◆ Satin chrome finish for ease of readingand resistance to rust
◆ Furnished with one needle point and onecone point

Universal BevelNo. 47 6 / 150mm
This improved Universal Bevel has bothoffset and straight slots in the blade, incombination with straight slots in the stockthat allow for a wide variety of adjustmentand angle settings that are impossible toobtain with many ordinary bevels.
Length of the blade is 6 (150mm), and thestock, 3 1/2 (90mm). The stock lies flat onthe work or paper since the head of theclamping bolt is recessed. This tool can beset to duplicate an angle from a master, orit may be easily converted into a BevelProtractor by using this tool with the No. 193 Protractor.

Any angle may be easily transferred fromone surface to another with the No. 49Combination Bevel. This tool has a slottedblade which swings on a stud on the stockto any angle desired, and is locked inposition by a knurled thumb nut.
An auxiliary blade, also furnished, may beeasily attached to the slotted blade and isclamped at any angle by a knurled nut. Thestock is square at one end and is beveled45º at the other. The auxiliary blade isbeveled to 30º and 60º at opposite ends.Stock and blades are approximately 4(100mm) long. The tool lies flat on thework. It may also be used with No. 193Protractor.
