FOREWORD..............................Mr. Suwat LiptapanlopChairman of Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University Council
Welcome to Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, and to the World
Conference on Paleontology and Stratigraphy 2011 (WCPS2011)
which is being held to commemorate the auspicious occasion of
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 84th Birthday (7th Cycle)
Anniversary on the 5th of December 2011.
Nakhon Ratchasima, or “Khorat” as it is locally known, is the second most populous
province in the nation, and the gateway to northeastern Thailand. Geographically, it is situated
on the sprawling Khorat plateau covering almost the entire north-east region of the country, the
area of which is well known for its richness in cultural heritage and decent people, and also its
abundance in natural resources and agricultural potentials. The Khorat plateau is blessed with
Forests, National Parks and Wildlife, Dams, and many historical sites. Its farmland produces
essential food and raw materials for country, such as rice, sugarcane, corn, cassava, rubber
and pulps. Underneath the plateau, important mineral and energy resources, such as rock salt,
potash, and natural gas, have also been discovered.
Geologically, the Khorat plateau is distinct area consisting mainly of non-marine
sedimentary rocks of Mesozoic and Cenozoic era, and underlying marine limestones and clastic
rocks of Permian age. This explains why there have been many discoveries of faunal and floral
fossils in this northeastern region: marine animal and plant from the limestones, fresh-water
organism and vertebrate including many species of dinosaurs and reptiles from the red beds,
mammals including fossils of eight elephant genera from sandpits, and semi-precious petrified
woods from gravel beds. Consequently, Nakhon Ratchasima may also be called the city of
paleontology.
As Chairman of the Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University Council, whose Northeastern
Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral Resources (NRIP) is the co-host of this
WCPS2011 event, we extend our warm welcome to all of you and wish you successful and
productive deliberation and information exchange at this conference.

The Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University has been
developing for over 88 years since initiated as a teacher
training school in 1913. It developed from a teacher training
school to a teacher college and then to Nakhon Ratchasima
Rajabhat Institute and adopted as Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University since 2004.
From the beginning we produced numbers of teachers to resolve the critical shortage
of teachers of the region. We have gradually upgraded from a school to a college and then to
an institute and finally a university. Our responsibilities have thus increased with time from
generation to generation. Teacher production is so far not our only task. Intensive research
is also our plan to generate products for overall social needs.
This is also the basic science as an important subject to contribute the scientific
knowledge to every level of social needs. We have attempted to revolute scientific research not
only at domestic level but also into the international arena. This is for learning, exchanging, and
sharing our experience and technical knowhow to enhance our research capability to
international level. We have so far conducted international research cooperation with countries
such as China, Japan, France, United States, Laos and New Zealand. We strongly hope we will
extendourcooperationallovertheglobewithoutscientificfrontier.

Due to Khorat is a land rich in fossils with diversified species across a long span of
geological time slices. They had been preserved in rocks dating back to as old as
Permian, the time that was occupied by a marine environment. Living things at that
time were the marine organisms living along the shallow sea on the continental shelf.
After that in the Mesozoic Era, Khorat was a mainland with a river basin system where land and aquatic organisms
living in. They were preserved in the rocks from layer to layer as records to reconstructing our Earth history. Dinosaurs
and their contemporaneous creatures had been unearthed from these rocks. After the extinction of dinosaur and some
other living things, Khorat entered a new world without dinosaurs. Mammals and flowering plants have substituted the
previous extinct creatures and rapidly evolved. Over nine genera of proboscideans and their associations had been found
in Khorat area. These fossils tell us about Khorat environments from period to period as a prehistoric Khorat.
This book is telling us about geology and fossil records in Khorat. It is the result from a large number of fossil
collections housed and displayed in our museum, the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified Wood and Mineral
Resources. These fossils in the musem are invaluable if they are systematically described and identified that needed
expertise paleontologists who we are still in shortage. We have plan to produce many of them to work beside those
fossils together with domestic and international paleontological cooperation. We are now keeping in touch with Chinese,
Japanese, American, French, Loa, and New Zealander paleontologists to dealing with the left fossil materials both in the
collection house and in the field. However, we have our plan to establish international curriculum in paleontology
to produce our own paleontologists that will become true in the near future.
Geology and paleontology are beyond the frontier that we need all jigsaws as smoking guns from all over
the globe to reconstruct and rearrange our own Earth history as a basic scientific knowledge to learning and understanding
other disciplines. This book “Prehistoric Khorat” provides you only the most updated geological and paleontological
research from the Khorat area but further research is still crucially needed. This book is thus something like a form of
progressive report couple with an indoor exhibition and oral presentations in the conference room.

“Khorat” is the general term of Nakhon
Ratchasima Province situated in the SW of
northeastern Thailand, about 256 kilometers
from Bangkok along Phahonyothin Road and Mittaphap
Road. It has a long history with various generations of human
civilization. However, the name “Khorat” is also used for
other applications such as “Khorat Plateau” for a landform
of the region, “Khorat Basin” for a sedimentary basin or river
basin, and “Khorat Group” for a series of rock formations of
Mesozoic clastic rocks. The entitle “Prehistoric Khorat” is used
herein to describe a long geological history of the province
where tremendous geological evidence has been discovered
including rocks, minerals, and fossils but is mainly focused
on the fossils.
Khorat is a great land with diversified geomorphologic
landforms as a part of the Khorat Plateau and Khorat Basin.
It contains both terrestrial and marine rocks and fossils as
old as approximately 275 million years old as well as a long
history of human civilizations tracing back over thousands of
years.

Khorat is one of the twenty provinces in the northeast of Thailand covering an area of about 20,805 km2 with a population
of over 2,565,000. It is the largest province of Thailand with a large population, second only to Bangkok, consisting of 32 districts. Even though the idea of separation of Khorat into smaller provinces has persisted for many tens of years, it seems to be difficult for the Khorat people. Since Khorat people have deep feelings of praise and appreciation to “Thao Suranaree” or “Grandmum Mo”, a brave lady, leader, who saved the city by harassing the invading Laotian troop, in 1826. Because Thao Suranaree is the great symbol of Khorat and Khorat people always want to be her grandchildren, that is why Khorat is still an undividable province. The elevation of the area ranges from 130 to approximately 1,326 meters above mean sea level with flat area in the north and mountainous area in the south with undulating terrain between them. The Mun River is the main river flowing from Khon Buri district to the north and diverted to the eastward direction in Chaloem Phra Kiat district and further flowing to drain into the Mekong River in Khong Chiam, Ubon Ratchathani. Tributaries of the Mun River in Khorat are Lam Takhong, Lam Phra Ploeng, Lam Chiang Krai, Lam Plai Mat, and Lam Sae. Khorat is in the tropical zone with a monsoonal climate. There are two distinctive seasons annually, wet and dry. The rainy season is between May and October with precipitation between 108 and 222 mm/month, while the dry season, winter and summer, is between November and April with an average precipitation between 18 and 64 mm/month. Average total annual precipitation is about 1,044 mm. The temperature is mild to hot average lagely ranging from 17 to 37°C. The vegetation varies from tropical dry to mix deciduous forests in general to tropical moist forests along the main rivers and mountainous areas. Forest area of the province is about 15.29% of the total province area, (2009 record), with 29 national conserved forests and two national parks, Khao Yai National Park and Thap Lan National Park.

Khorat is situated on the SW margin
slope, or cuesta, of the Khorat basin
comprising rocks that are oldest in the
southwesternmost margin and younger towards the
northeast. The oldest rocks are limestone, shale, and slate
with an age as old as Permian. These Permian marine rocks
are exposed as mountain ranges at the outermost margin
of the basin and are unconformably overlain by the younger
Mesozoic clastic rocks. The Mesozoic rocks in the Khorat
consist of seven formations including Huai Hin Lat, Phu
Kradung, Phra Wihan, Sao Khua, Phu Phan, Khok Kruat, and
Maha Sarakham formations in ascending succession from
the oldest Triassic to the youngest, Cretaceous, respectively
(Boonnop, 2010). However, the ages of the rock formations
have been interpreted differently depending upon materials
used in age determinations. The Mesozoic rock formations
are covered by Neogene and Quaternary unconsolidated
sediments, especially gravel terrace deposits, with the
Yasothonsoilseriesontop(LöfflerandKubiniok,1991).
The geomorphologic landforms in the province and
nearby areas are the results of Late Cenozoic tectonism of
uplifting and gentle folding. Erosion and deposition have
shaped the area into various landforms such as mountain
ranges, intermontane valleys, table-land, cuesta, and
peneplains with some wind gaps and water gaps across
the mountain ranges, particularly water gaps where some
dam sites are situated. Along the southern and southwestern
margins there are some Triassic granite and granodiorite
intrusions into the Permian country rocks generating some
volume of massive marble, slate, and ore deposits. In the
south, Khon Buri, Late Cenozoic basalt overlies the Khok
Kruat Formation sandstone, covering an area approximately
1,400 km2. The basalt is characterized by grey to greyish black,
fine-grained with intergranular texture. These volcanic
rocks are composed of alkaline olivine basalt and hawaiite
with less abundant basanite, tholeiite, and other rock types

(Barr and Macdonald, 1978; Zhou and Mukasa, 1997; Faure,
2001). A volcanic eruption had been affected by the crustal
extension of the marginal Pacific tectonic domain of eastern
China during the Cenozoic. As a result, lavas of Neogene
and Quaternary ages erupted at scattered locations along the
southern margin of the Khorat Plateau. These volcanic rocks
of the Khorat Plateau resemble those of southern China in
several ways. They formed under conditions of extensional
tectonics in the Neogene and Quaternary from magma
sources in the asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle. The
magma differentiated by fractional crystallization without
assimilation of crustal rocks (Faure, 2001).
The rocks and sediments yield numerous fossils of
vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, and traces that provide us
clear enough pictures of the prehistoric background of the
area of Khorat.

Indochina terrane covers the areas of northeastern Thailand
extending widely to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, eastern
Malaysia, and Sumatra which had been rifted and separated
from eastern Gondwana in the Devonian and became a
composite terrane “Cathaysialand” with south China in the

Permian (Metcalfe, 2009). The two terranes had been
separated by a Tethyans seaway prior to amalgamation by
the Late Triassic. A suture zone developed after amalgamation
has been conventionally accepted as a narrow zone of ophiolite
in the middle of the country extending from Jinghong in Yunnan,
China, down to Nan, Uttaradit, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima,
Sa Kaeo, and across the Gulf of Thailand to Malaysia (Bunopas,
1982; Hada et al., 1999). However, this suture zone has
recently been reconsidered as a closed back-arc basin and
theSukhothaizoneisredefinedasthecorepartofthePermian
island-arc system, - including the Linchang, Sukhothai and
Chanthaburi terranes, developed on the western margin of the
Indochina terrane. Additionally, a new main suture is declared
tobetothewestdefinedbyrocksdepositedintheDevonian-
Triassic Palaeo-Tethys Ocean extending from Changning-
Menglian, Chiang Mai/Inthanon, and Bentong Raub suture
zones. This suture zone contains ophiolitic mélanges,
volcanics, shallow marine carbonates, and deep-sea
sedimentary rocks with substantial pelagic cherts largely
completely developed by Late Triassic (Sone and Metcalfe,
2008; Metcalfe, 2009). However these two different
suture-zone models need further confirmation by more field
investigations and research. The suture is remarkably differ-
entiated geologically from the two nearby microcontinents by
a long narrow massif of mafic to ultramafic rocks. The
amalgamation had generated tectonic forces including
tensional stress, compressional stress, and shearing stress
giving rise to metamorphism and deformations like folds,
orogenies, faults, joints, and cracks.
Thailand has become a part of the Eurasian
supercontinent, which has been affected by Himalayan
orogeny since the Early Cenozoic forming a part of extrusion
tectonics in a southeasterly direction along left-lateral Red
River fault. This extrusion is the result of forces generated by
the collision between the Indian subcontinent and Eurasian
supercontinent (Tapponnier et al., 1982) shaping Thailand’s
geological features as seen nowadays as well as the Khorat
Plateau in northeastern Thailand.
The Khorat Plateau, as a part of the Indochina terrane,
has been formed by continuous uplifting for a long period
of time probably throughout the Late Cenozoic generating
some chains of mountain ranges such as Phu Phan, Dong
Phaya Yen, Sankambeng, and Phanom Dong Rak. The uplift
has formed the Khorat plateau with two basins inside, Sakon
Nakhon basin in the north and Khorat basin in the south,
demarcated by the Phu Phan ranges.
The Khorat basin is a large sedimentary basin consisting
of a series of Mesozoic terrestrial clastic rock formations with
the oldest outcrops exposed at the outermost margin
of the basin and successively younger outcrops toward the
center of the basin. The basin contains unconsolidated
Cenozoic sediments of different types and provenances.
Rocks and sediments of the basin preserve various types
of fossils from the oldest to the youngest rocks across the
stratigraphic successions as old as Permian to Recent. These
fossil records across the geological time slices provide
good information telling us about the geological history of
the region.
Khorat, or Nakhon Ratchasima, is a province in the
Khorat basin consisting of rock formations aged from Permian
to Recent with fossil records of both plants and animals and
other organisms. The fossils play an important role telling us
about the evolution of life from primitive vertebrates and
plants to modern mammals and flowering plants. Some of
them had evolved and become extinction in such periods of
time, like dinosaurs, primitive elephants, hippopotamuses,
rhinoceroses, hyenas, giraffes, horses, apes, etc. They also
provide valuable information about paleobiogeographic
changes across a long geological history of the province.
Understanding the natural history of our own land of both
space and time is quite important as our motto “learning
from the past, understanding the present, and imagining
the future”.

PALEOZOIC........................มหายคพาลโอโซอก
Paleozoic rocks of Khorat are beneath
the Mesozoic clastic rock formations
and crop out along the Khorat basin’s margin in the areas of
Pak Chong and Wang Nam Khiao districts and further extend
to the areas in Saraburi and Lop Buri provinces. Their
exposures are limited as small areas in the SW of Khorat, with
few fossils having been studied. Information for describing
the prehistoric Khorat during this period of time is thus based
on information from the nearby areas, especially in Saraburi
and Lop Buri provinces.
Khorat during late Early Permian was under seawater
represented by the Nong Pong Formation. Shale is
intercalated by limestone, but shale is thicker than limestone
in some places and vice versa. Limestone in some portions
has thin beds with argillaceous limestone intercalations. Chert
and lime nodules in shale have been found to contain fossils
ammonites, Agathiceras sp., and fusulines, Thailandina
buravasi, Pseudodoliolina sp., Neofusulina sp., Verbeekina sp.,
Cancellina sp., Neofusulinella sp., and Pseudofusulina cf.
japonica, indicating probable late Early to early Middle
Permian, Yakhtashian-Kubergandian (Assavapatchara et al.,
2006).
The overlying formation, Pang Asok Formation, mainly
consists of brownish to greenish grey shale, slaty shale,
and greyish green slate with greenish grey sandstone. It is
siliciclastic-dominated unit. Some rocks were metamorphosed
into hornfels frequently intercalated by limestone. Fossils are
incomplete bivalves and poorly preserved plant leaves with
uncertain age but Early Permian has been inferred (Hinthong,
1981), the same as the age of the Nong Pong Formation.
The next overlying formation, the Khao Khad
Formation, consists mainly of limestone white to grey in
colors characterized by beds thin to massive generally
intercalated by chert layers. Some places are intercalated
by dolomite, sandy shale, siltstone, and sandstone and
some parts were metamorphosed into marble, calc-silicate,
and hornfels. The main fossils found in these rocks are
abundant Artinskian-Kungurian fusulines, brachiopods,
gastropods, and minor ammonites together with corals,
bryozoa, crinoids, and algae. The fossils confirm Early to
Middle Permian to early Middle Permian as the age of this
rock formation. The Khao Khad Formation was most likely
deposited during a major transgressive and regressive cycle
of seawater during the Lower to Middle Permian time in the
marine shelf condition under sub-environments of intertidal
to subtidal zones near shore, subtidal zone of lagoon,
shallow platform, barrier bar or shoal and foreslope of barrier
bar (Assavapatchara et al., 2006; Thambunya et al., 2007;
Ueno and Charoentitirat, 2011).
The rocks and fossils were deposited in a shallow sea
on this continental shelf. During this period of time, Khorat
was under a warm tropical climate, and shallow seas on the
continental shelf had gradually regressed to be shallower
with time.

Ages of the Mesozoic rocks in the
northeast came from two different age
determination approaches. On the basis of macrofossils and
vertebrates, they vary from Triassic to Cretaceous from the
Huai Hin Lat Formation in the bottommost layers to the Maha
Sarakham Formation in the topmost. Huai Hin Lat and Nam
Phong formations are Late Triassic. Phu Kradung is Middle
to Late Jurassic while Phra Wihan is Middle Jurassic to Early
Cretaceous. Sao Khua, Phu Phan, and Khok Kruat
formations are Early Cretaceous and Maha Sarakham
Formation is Late Cretaceous (Sattayarak and Srigulawong,
2008).
But on the basis of palynology, Huai Hin Lat Formation
is Late Triassic. Nam Phong Formation is separated into
lower and upper parts by an unconformity. The Lower Nam
Phong Formation is Late Triassic (Rhaetian), whereas the
Upper Nam Phong Formation is not older than Lower Jurassic
(Pliensbachian). Phu Kradung Formation is considered to be
Cretaceous as evidenced by the presence of the fossil
sporomorph Dicheiropollis etruscus, a taxon that is restricted
to this age interval. The overlying formations, Phra Wihan,
Sao Khua, Phu Phan, Khok Kruat, and Maha Sarakham, are
mostly Cretaceous (Racey and Goodall, 2009).
These different ages of the rock formations are still
seriously debated among geologists. One point of view
relates to the observation that each rock formation has
lithology somewhat homogeneous in characteristics all over
the region. The rock formations had actually been deposited
by a river system that must generate sediments in different
ways from place to place along the rivers as well as across
seasonal changes. It seems to be impossible that a river
produced the same type of sediments in every parts of a
river. Short geological time spans across the whole rock
formations thus seems to be more reliable than long time
spans. However, descriptions in the prehistoric events of
these rock formations are herein taken from formation to
formation in terms of ascendant lithostratigraphic

arrangement without seriously considering the real ages of
the rock formations.
Huai Hin Lat and Nam Phong formations, in the Khorat
Plateau are clearly exposed only in the NW of the region in
Loei, Khon Kaen, and Chaiyaphum and probably extended
down beneath Khorat observable outside the Khorat area
in Saraburi and Lop Buri. The Late Triassic Huai Hin Lat
Formation is composed of basal conglomerate, sandstone,
mudstone, and gypsum in some layers. The pebbles in the
basal conglomerate are sometimes composed of limestone
with fusulinids regarded as being reworked from the
Permian limestone. Khorat at this time was under slightly
humid to semi-arid conditions and the Shan-Thai and
Indochina microcontinents were amalgamating to be a
single mainland in this period of time. A large sauropod
dinosaur, Isanosaurus attavipachi, found in the Nam Phong
Formation in Chaiyaphum (Buffetaut et al., 2000), probably
also wandered around in the Khorat areas.
In the Phu Kradung Formation, extending from Pak
ChongtoWangNamKhiao,wellpreservedsilicifiedwood
is widely distributed in sandstone, but systematic studies are
still so far unavailable. However, fossil conifers from other
areas of the same rock formation, mainly from Phu Phan
range, have been reported. Forests in the Khorat Plateau were
dominated by conifer trees growing alongside streams under
a rather arid climate, although this became wetter during the
deposition of the upper formations of the Khorat Group. The
silicified woods outside Khorat have been reported as
Agathoxylon saravanensis and Brachyoxylon spp.,
previously known as Araucarioxylon saravanensis and
Protopodocarpoxylon spp. respectively, the conifers (Philippe
et al., 2004). Durung late Mesozoic period, the tropical conifer
vegetation in northeastern Thailand was dominated by the
family Araucariaceae (Wang et al., 2006). A fossil semionotid
fish found in sandstone of the Phu Kradung Formation in
Ban Tha Rue, Wang Nam Khiao, near a small stream flowing
down to the Lam Phra Phloeng reservoir, is being studied
(Deesri et al., 2011). It is an extinct fish living in a freshwater
environment during the Mesozoic. The environment at this
time in Khorat was thus mainly covered by conifer forests with
stream or river systems where the fishes swam around.

Even though there have been no discoveries of
dinosaurs in Khorat from the Sao Khua Formation, it seems
that dinosaurs should be presented. At least three three-toed
footprints of theropod dinosaurs, Siamopodus khaoyaiensis,
have been found on some broken Early Creataceous
sandstone slabs at Wang Heiw waterfall, Khao Yai National
Park, Na Di, Prachin Buri, not very far from the Khorat border,
revealing that more or less there were dinosaurs roaming
in the Khorat area (Lockley et al., 2006). Several taxa of
dinosaurs were previously reported from the Sao Khua
Formation in Khon Kaen and Kalasin as well as other areas
namely Phuwiangosaurus sirindhornae, Siamosaurus
suteethorni, Siamotyrannus isanensis, Compsognathus sp.,
and Kinnareemimus khonkaenensis (Buffetaut and Ingavat,
1984, 1986; Buffetaut et al., 1996, 2009; Martin et al., 1994).
During deposition of the Khok Kruat Formation, Khorat
was still a land of dinosaurs. Recently, fossil dinosaurs
have been recovered from dense calcareous conglomeratic
sandstone of the Khok Kruat Formation. The Thailand-Japan
Dinosaur Excavation Project had unearthed a fossil site in
Ban Saphan Hin, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima, between
2007 and 2010. The excavations yielded over ten thousand
pieces of bones, teeth, coprolites, shell plates, fins and
scales of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, turtles, crocodiles, fishes,
and plant remains but they are mainly fragmentary. Some of
them are well enough preserved, such as teeth of iguanodont
and allosaur, dorsal vertebrae and distal part of a femur of
iguanodont, partial dentary of hadrosaur, a tooth of pterosaur
(a flying reptile), crocodile teeth, teeth of hybodont shark, and
tail fins and scales of Lepidotes fishes. All specimens are now
housed at the Northeastern Research Institute of Petrified
Wood and Mineral Resources. This assemblage of fossils
has enabled researchers to depict the scenery of Cretaceous
Khorat’s landscape that was occupied by diversified species
of dinosaurs and other land and flying reptiles together with
aquatic creatures in the river like the hybodont sharks and

Lepidotes fishes. However, the systematic descriptions and
identifications are still awaiting study and further excavations
will be carried out in the early coming year.
In 2011, two new species of iguanodontian dinosaurs
have been reported from Ban Pong Malaengwan and Ban
Saphan Hin, Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima district. The first
species was described from a complete left dentary with no
teeth designated as Ratchasimasaurus suranareae (Shibata
et al., 2011). Another piece of fossil is described from a
nearly complete left maxilla bearing several teeth designated
as Siamodon nimngami (Buffetaut and Suteethorn, 2011).
These two species are from two different fossil sites, about
500 meters from each other, but belonging to the same
rock formation, Khok Kruat Formation. The Ratchasimasaurus
suranareae and Siamodon nimngami are considered as
advanced iguanodontians. They diversified in Early
Cretaceous, not only in the East but also in Southeast Asia.
They may first appeares in Asia before they dispersed to
North America. However, future discoveries in North America
may easily lead to revise this scenario (Shibata et al., 2011;
Buffetaut and Suteethorn, 2011).
Nevertheless, some species of reptiles and aquatic
creatures have been described from the Ban Saphan Hin
fossil site such as a land crocodile Khoratosuchus jintasakuli,
turtle Kizylkumemys khoratensis and Shachemys sp., and hy-
bodont shark Thaiodus ruchae (Lauprasert et al., 2009; Tong
et al., 2005; Cappetta et al., 1990). Ban Saphan Hin is thus
reconstructed as a freshwater environment, probably a river
with sandy pebble streambed inhabited by diversified aquatic
species. A crocodile, Khoratosuchus jintasakuli, was eating
a large Lepidotes fish in the river but it could also emerge
from the river to run on land very quickly with its four long
legs. A pig-nosed turtle, carettochelyid turtle Kizylkumemys
khoratensis, was gliding in the river with its flippers resembling
those of marine turtles and it is known as a fly river turtle. A
couple of adocid turtles, Shachemys sp., characterized by a
combination of aquatic and terrestrial features, kept together
at the bank of the river with dense horsetails.
The deposition of the Maha Sarakham Formation during
the Cretaceous was under an arid climate with accumulation
of evaporitic salts. The rock formation consists of mudstone,
siltstone, rock salt, gypsum, and anhydrite deposited in a
hyper-saline, landlocked lake within an arid continental
desert. There are no reports of macrofossil records from this
rock formation but palynological evidence, including
Verrucosisporites spp., Taurocusisporites cf. reduncus, and
Caliallasporites spp., with some angiosperm pollen,
suggested that the age of the rock formation is Albian-
Cenomanian (latest Early to earliest Late Cretaceous) (Racey
and Goodall, 2009). In addition, the age of this rock formation
was previously dated by using multiple isotopic approaches
(87Sr/86Sr, K/Ar, and K/Ca) as Cenomanian in age too
(Hansen et al., 2002).

5.3 CENOZOIC........................มหายคซโนโซอก
Khorat in the Cenozoic Era has
dramatically changed from the
previous Mesozoic. Dinosaurs were completely extinct by
the end of Mesozoic, while mammals and flowering plants
have rapidly evolved with great diversified species throughout
the Cenozoic Era. However, there is no evidence of Paleogene
rocks in Khorat, only Neogene and Quaternary fossils have
been described. Himalayan orogeny had commenced at some
time during the Paleogene by collision between the Indian
subcontinent and Eurasian supercontinent remarkably
changing various features of geomorphologic landforms of
the Southeast Asian region (Tapponnier et al., 1982).
Cenozoic fossils found in Khorat were from
unconsolidated sediments particularly from fluvial deposits
along the Mun River and its tributariesfrom Ban Khok Sung,
Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima, to Chaloem Phra Kiat and
probably also in Chum Phuang and Phimai districts.
Abundant faunal fossils have been found in many
sandpits along the Mun River including at least eight
genera of proboscideans such as Gomphotherium sp.,
Protanancus sp., Prodeinotherium sp., Tetralophodon sp.,
Stegolophodon sp., Sinomastodon sp., Stegodon sp., and
Elephas sp. Other mammals comprise bovines (Bubalus
bubalis), rhinoceroses (Brachipotherium sp., Chilotherium sp.,
Gaindatherium sp., Aceratherium sp.), hippopotamuses,
hipparion horses, orangutan (Khoratpithecus piriyai),
anthracotheres (Merycopotamus thachangensis),
antelopes, giraffes (?Sivatherium sp.), pigs (Hippopotamodon
sivalensis, Tetraconodon sp., Conohyus sp., Hyotherium sp.),
saber-toothed cats, spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta),
chital deer (Axis axis), and lesser mouse deer as well as Indian
gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), soft-shelled turtles, turtles,
and mollusk shells.
Unfortunately, the fossils were recovered from many
sandpits lacking precise stratigraphic arrangements because
the discoveries of the fossils were mainly byproducts of sand
production by hydraulicking. Almost fossils were probably
from different stratigraphic levels becoming mixed together

and were thus collected with unknown real stratigraphic
positions. However, in terms of morphologic evolution of the
fossils, Gomphotherium is regarded as the most primitive
genus first appearing in Early Miocene and Elephas is the
most advanced first appearing in thePliocene.Almost all
of the mentioned proboscideans and some of the other
mammals have mysteriously become extinct, from Thailand
particularly, and the proboscideans from our Planet Earth
including many species of Elephas, except Elephas maximus,
the Asian elephant, which still survives in the present day.
Although the provenance of mammalian fossils along the
Mun River is problematic, the fossil assemblages have
indicated that they can be sorted into three fossil
assemblages of Middle Miocene, Late Miocene, and Early
Pleistocene (Hanta et al., 2008).
Khorat during this Late Cenozoic had a large main
river, the Mun River, with its tributaries, under a warm
tropical climate. Strips of riverside forests were inhabited by
apes, saber-toothed cats, and anthracotheres. Grasslands
beyond the forests were where herds of bovines, rhinoceroses,
horses, and proboscideans roamed while the deer and pigs
wandered along the edge of the grasslands. There were
plenty of crocodiles, Indian gharials, turtles, soft-shelled
turtles, fishes, and mollusks in the river while some
hippopotamuses were bathing.
A well preserved lower jaw of Late Miocene hominoid
fossil from a sandpit in Tha Chang, Khoratpithecus piriyai,
was associated with many fossil tree trunks, wood fragments,
andlargevertebrateremainssuchasproboscideans.Theflora
indicates the occurrence of a riverine tropical forest and
wide areas of grassland. Several of the derived morphological
characters are shared with the orangutan, indicating a
sister-group relationship with that extant ape. Orangutans
are the only exclusively Asian genus of extant great apes.
They are native to Indonesia and Malaysia currently found
only in rainforests on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra.
The genus Khoratpithecus was first described as cf.
Lufengpithecus chiangmuanensis on the basis of eighteen
Middle Miocene tooth specimens from the Chiang Muan lignite
mine in Payao, northern Thailand (Chaimanee et al., 2003).
However, the species has later been referred to as into
Khoratpithecus chiangmuanensis due to the new discovery

Beside a herd of ancient proboscideans, a herd of
small mammals with a morphological combination of pig
and hippopotamus features, anthracothere, was roaming
around along the Mun riverside. These mammals were more
or less the same size as modern boars. A fossil specimen
ofacraniumwasdescribedandidentifiedasanewspecies
in 2008. It is a species of Merycopotamus closely related to
the species found in Siwalik Hill, Myanmar, Potwar Plateau
in Pakistan, Azad Kashmir, Iraq, Nepal, and Indonesia. The
specimen from Khorat was regarded as different from fossils
from those areas. Merycopotamus thachangensis was thus
designated as a new species found in the Tha Chang sandpit
(Hanta et al., 2008).
Merycopotamus is an extinct genus of Asian
anthracothere that appeared during the Middle Miocene, and
died out in the Late Pliocene. At the height of influence of
the genus, species ranged throughout southern Asia. With
the extinction of the last species, M. dissimilis, the lineage of
anthracotheres came to an end. Merycopotamus was closely
related to the anthracothere genus Libycosaurus, which,
unlike the former, never left Africa. In fact, some African fossils
originally placed in Merycopotamus, but are now referred to
Libycosaurus.
Fossil woods are common to abundant with diversified
species mainly deposited in association with Plio-Pleistocene
river terrace deposits. Some specimens were described
and identified such as Albizia lebbeck, Aquilaria sp.,
Anacardiaceae, Azadirachta sp., Homalium tomentosum,
Canarium sp., Careya sphaerica, Combretum spp.,
Cynometroxylon spp., Dipterocarpoxylon sarapeense,
Pahudioxylon sahnii, Dialium cochinchinense, Irvingia sp.,
Millettia leucantha, Mangiferoxylon sp., Duabanga grandiflora,
Anogeissus acuminata, Terminalia spp., Terminalia
paracoriaceum, Protium serratum, Dracontomelon dao,
Holarrhena pubescens, Wrightia arborea,andfivespecies
of palm. Most taxa show resemblance to the modern taxa
distributed in the Khorat Plateau at present and represent
dry evergreen to mix deciduousand and evergreen broadleaf
forests (Vozenin-Serra and Privé-Gill, 2001; Benyasuta, 2003;

In Ban Khok Sung, Mueang, Nakhon Ratchasima, a
large assemblage of fossil vertebrates was found in a medium
sized dug pond developed for water supplies by a large
ricemill.Ityieldeddiversifiedtaxasuchasspottedhyenas,
Stegodon, bovines, and chital deer. Reptiles were found as
well preserved specimens such as Indian gharials, turtles,
and fishes in associationwith common fossil tree trunks
and abundant fruits and seeds. Most of the vertebrates are
complete specimens comprising parts of skulls, jaws, teeth,
bones, and antlers collected from the Quaternary gravelly
sand layer between 4-5 meters deep from the ground surface.
The fossil assemblages have been deposited in the channels
and floodplain of a meandering river system as indicated by
the presence of well preserved fossil specimens and
fining-upward sedimentary sequences.
In addition, fossil fruits were reported from Ban Khok
Sung with good preservations. These fruites consist of Ziziphus
khoksungensis, Dipterocarpus costatus, Melia azedarach,
and Dracontomelon dao. Tubers have also been recovered
that are similar to those of Cyperus or Bolboschoenus. The
above specimens suggest the presence of tropical mixed
deciduous and dry evergreen forests (Grote, 2007). Based
on paleomagnetic polarity analysis, the plant community
mentioned above inhabited Ban Khok Sung at approximately
younger than 780,000 years B.P. (Grote, 2007).
Surprisingly, fossil assemblages from Tha Chang
and Khok Sung present interesting pictures of ancient
animal communities more or less equivalent to those found in
modern-day Africa. The spotted hyenas are today only found
in Africa, but during the Late Cenozoic they also inhabited
Eurasia including Khorat and became extinct by the end of
the Late Pleistocene. The cause of this extinction is now still
mysterious, as well as is the extinction of proboscideans.
Proboscideans have comprised up to 175 species of 42
genera of 10 families in the past (Shoshani and Tassy, 2005),
but at present there are only three species left, a species of
Asian elephant Elephas maximus and two species of African
elephants, Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis.
The fossil woods mostly belong to flowering plants of
both dicotyledons and palms. The taxonomic composition of
the fossil assemblages strongly suggest that they are either

displayed modern characters, whereas the Javanese fauna
were mainly composed of endemic forms. It is also confirmed
by the presence of northern species such as the panda
Ailuropoda melanoleuca and spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta
in Late Middle Pleistocene sites of Thailand. Because of climatic
cooling that occurred in the northern hemisphere during the
Pleistocene, the northern faunas had to move southward.
Even though the boundary between the two zoological
provinces is today located at the Kra Isthmus in peninsular
Thailand, the boundary in the past was located more
southward than today as suggested by the presence of the
extinct elephant species, Elephas namadicus found in a
Malaysian site (Tougard, 2001). Therefore, Khorat was a part
of the great dispersal corridor during the ice age.
In addition, a sedimentary profile with tektite sedimentary
host was stratigraphically and chronologically studied from
a sandpit in Tha Chang, Chaloem Phra Kiat district. Few
tektites were collected entirely from a sedimentary unit and
were recognized on the basis of geometry including teardrop,
dumbbell, and circular tektites. The tektites ranging in size

from less than 0.5 mm to up to 5 cm, were discovered from a
thick pebble bed. Based on the sedimentary facies and age
dating investigation together with previous geological reports,
the tektites tentatively originated during the Pleistocene 0.75
Ma as a result of a fast-velocity and ultrahigh-pressure
meteorite impact in an area at the Thai-Lao-Cambodia border. This
may have caused melting of quartz-rich Mesozoic non-marine
strata of the Khorat Group generating the Thailandite tektite
strewnfield(Charusiriet al., 2002).

The tektites are widely distributed from China, Vietnam,
Lao, and Cambodia. They have been named according to the
localities where they have been found as Chinite, Indochinite,
Thailandite, and even Australite. They were generated by
meteor impacts from the same event, about 0.7-0.8 Ma, and
all of them have been named as Australasian tektites.
The Early Pleistocene meteorite impacts in Thailand
and nearby countries have been seriously debated among
geologists. Itwas first postulatedbyBunopas (1990) that
the meteor impacts generated a vast volume of sediment
catapulted into the atmosphere as catastroloess and
deposited as a soil series all over the region. This soil series
isequivalent to theYasothonsoil series firstdescribedby
Moormann et al. (1964).
If the story of Early Pleistocene meteorite impacts is
real, it is possible that it might be directly related to the
extinction of some animals like proboscideans, splotted
hyenas, and others. Multidisciplinary research in involved
branches of sciences is strongly suggested to solve this
questionable event.

5.4 PREHISTORIC HUMANS.................................................มนษยกอนประวตศาสตร
Khorat has a long history tracing back
to over 4,000 years B.P. from Neolithic,
Bronze, and Iron ages. Evidences of prehistoric humans are
from two main archaeological sites, Ban Prasat and Ban
Non Wat, in Non Sung district, about 45-50 kilometers north
of the Khorat township.
Ban Prasat site, Than Prasat sub-district, is set up as an
outdoor museum. Findings indicate that the area was once
inhabited by a prehistoric to early historic community. In
addition, there is evidence that a community of the Dvaravati
and Khmer periods thrived here some 1,500 to 3,000 years
ago. There are three pits that have been landscaped and are
open to the public. Discoveries of human skeletons and many
pottery pieces that were dug up from various levels are
evidence of human evolution, community beliefs, and culture.
Ban Non Wat, Phon Songkhram sub-district, is another
village in Non Sung, located at about 12 kilometers west of the
Ban Prasat archaeological site. It is regarded as the largest
and richest archaeological digs with longest cultural continuity
in Thailand under current excavation. It has become one of
the most important sites for understanding indigenous
societies ancestral to the Empire of Angkor. Evidence at
the site traces the development of the area from supposed
colonization by early Neolithic farmers about 4,000 years
ago, through Bronze and Iron Age strata to more recent
occupation. The village is still occupied today. This continuous
occupation and archaeological richness makes the site
virtually unique in Thailand, in particular, extensive Neolithic
occupation and cemetery evidence is rare at Thai sites
(Chang et al., 2010).

PETRIFIEDWOOD MUSEUM...................................พพธภณฑไมกลายเปนหน
Thailand is a rich country in petrified
wood, especially in Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen,
Chaiyaphum, Buri Ram, Surin, Ubon Ratchathani, and
Kalasin, and the northeast of Thailand is probably regarded
as one of the most prominent petrified wood sites of Asia.
The petrified wood has been known in Thailand for long time
ago as indicated by a petrified tree log found over 90 years
ago.
In 1921, King Rama VI visited the railway construction
crossing the Mun River at Ban Ta Kut Khon, Tha Chang,
Chaloem Phra Kiat, Nakhon Ratchsima as a part of the
construction project from Nakhon Ratchasima to Ubon
Ratchathani. Phraya Ramphaiphongboribhat (Jit Bunnak), the
chief engineer of the project presented him with a petrified
tree log found from the Mun riverbed and bestowed to the
king as an important and goodwill gift from local people.
The king suggested conserving it in the local area.
Since then, that piece of petrified tree log has been
exhibited as a memorial monument near the railway bridge
regarded as the first petrified wood conservation in Thailand.
The monument reminds us of how local people appreciated
the importance of petrified wood even over 90 years ago.
Petrified wood in Nakhon Ratchasima as well as
elsewhere in the Khorat basin is found commonly to
abundantly influvialdepositsaswellas in theabandoned
river terrace gravel deposits. During the years 1956-1958,
a vast volume of lateritic gravel soil had been used for
Mittraphap Road construction from Saraburi to Nakhon
Ratchasima and the main source materials were from two
sites, Khao Din (Ban Nong Rangka) and Khao Kaeo (Ban Krok
Duean Ha). The two sites had been exploited for construction
materials for a long period of time as well as for using in
construction of a runway in the 2nd Army Area, and then the

the province. Throughout nearly 40 years of the lateritic gravel
soil exploitation at the two sites, thousands of medium and
large sized petrified wood specimens had been taken from
the areas for private possessions as well as for trading to
both domestic and foreign countries (Boonchai et al., 2009)
andthesituationhadbecomethepetrifiedwoodcrisisofthe

sectors of the province headed by the Nakhon Ratchasima

wood conservation project and had later chosen a piece of
land of about 32 acres in Ban Krok Duean Ha, with courtesy

Even though the petrified wood
specimens found in Khorat had been widely known and
popular and led to the building of the museum for display
as exhibitions. Other fossil specimens were also known from
black markets as illegal trading to private collectors in the
beginning. After that, numbers of specimens had gradually
increased with time, and it had been known that the sources
of the fossils were mainly from some sandpits in Chaloem
Phra Kiat where sand was exploited along the Mun River for
construction materials. The sand production was initially made
by directly digging to the ground surface to obtain sand and
leaving a small sandpit. The sandpit mining was then further
conducted by gravel pumping together with hydraulicking
andthesandwasthenseparatedasafinalproduct.These
processes frequently revealed fossil specimens in the
sandpits, which were mainly collected by sandpit workers
and subsequently sold to antique dealers and amateur
fossil collectors. Because of this practice, the precise
stratigraphic positions of those fossils are, thus, still unknown.
Inaddition, to thenumerousspecimensofpetrifiedwood,
there is also collection of leaves, fruits, and seeds.

been systematically housed and some of them are displayed
in the museum. The fossil elephants are thought to comprise
the most taxa diversification in the world with at least eight
genera, totally found only in Khorat, including Gomphotherium,
Protanancus, Prodeinotherium, Tetralophodon, Stegolophodon,
Sinomastodon, Stegodon, and Elephas. Apart from the
elephant fossils, other mammals and reptiles were also
discovered, such as anthracotheres, deer, spotted hyenas,
pigs, saber-toothed cats, antelopes, giraffes, rhinoceroses,
hippopotamuses, bovines, hipparoin horses, orangutans,
turtles, Indian gharials, crocodiles, turtles, soft-shelled turtles,
and fishes.
Dinosaurs are the most famous and popular fossils for
general people, particularly children, around the world. In
Thailand, they are mostly found in the northeast of Thailand
with two large dinosaur museums in Khon Kaen and Kalasin.
However, the dinosaurs are also found in Khorat, but mostly
from the Khok Kruat Formation, in a dense calcareous con
glomeratic sandstone. Khorat is therefore also regarded
as “the land of dinosaurs” but systematic studies are still in
progress.
Therefore, the museum of the Northeastern Research

Since large amount of fossils in the museum and in the fields are still waiting for studying in systematic descriptions and identifications, life evolution, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction. Paleontologists are thus crucially needed but Thailand is a country where paleontologists are in shortage and need to be increased in number for a long term solution. At the present, academic cooperation among paleontological circles at both domestic and international levels are possible. We are preparing an international curriculum on paleontology to produce master and doctoral degrees in paleontology to dealing with the fossils in both the museum and in the fields.

tropical shallow sea during the Permian with deposition of
clastic rocks and limestone with diversified marine
invertebrate species. Shebecameamainlandwith fluvial
systems in the Triassic persisting until the Early Cretaceous.
During this period of time, Khorat was in a river basin with
arid to semi-arid and wet climates dominated by coniferous
treeswithfreshwaterfishesandreptiles,suchassemionotid
fishes,hybodontsharks,turtles,crocodiles,dinosaurs,and
pterosaurs.
By the Late Cretaceous, Khorat was in an extremely
arid climate with deserts and playas as indicated by the
remnants of evaporites such as potash and rock salt
deposits in Non Thai, Non Sung, and Phimai. This rock
formation, Maha Sarakham Formation, is lacking in fossil
records but isotopic evidence from the rock salt suggests
Cenomanian, Late Cretaceous, as the age of the rock
formation.
The Cenozoic is the era marked by the extinction of
dinosaurs together with some contemporaneous plants and
animals. The Paleogene rocks have mostly disappeared
from the region or are left as only still questionable portions.
Miocene faunasand florasmightbepresent,but theyare
probably much younger as Plio-Pleistocene in age. Abundant
faunal and floral assemblages are found along river
sedimentary deposits of the Mun River comprising mammals,
reptiles,fishes,mollusks,andplantremains.Teethandtusks
with some skeletons of proboscideans have been mainly
discovered from several sandpits made by human activities.
They consist of at least eight genera of proboscideans even
though nowadays there is only one species, Elephas
maximus, left in the region.
Other than the proboscideans, other interesting
mammals were reported such as short-necked giraffes,
antelopes, hyenas, deer, anthracotheres, pigs, and
orangutans. A genus of primitive orangutan, Khoratpithecus,
discovered from a sandpit in Chaloem Phra Kiat, is also
reported from other areas such as Chiang Muan in the north
and Irrawaddy Formation in Myanmar. Nowadays, the
orangutan is native only in the islands of Borneo and
Sumatra, indicating that the orangutans were more widely
distributed in the past than at present.
A geomorphologic landform in the west and south of
Khorat particularly in the south of the modern Mun River
yieldsabundantpetrifiedwood.Itistheremnantsedimentary
deposits left by the meandering of the Mun River. Wood
anatomical analyses indicate that the floral assemblages
quite closely resemble the modern plant communities
representing dry evergreen to mixed deciduous forests.
Tektites, widely known as the evidence of a meteorite
impact, are reported from many areas of the northeast,
including Khorat. They are also reported from China, Vietnam,
Laos, Cambodia, and Australia and have been named as
“Australasiantektites”.Theageofthetektitesisabout0.7-0.8
million years indicating that there was an Early-Middle
Pleistocene meteor impact on the Earth’s surface in the
region, but the impact site is still so far unknown. However,
there are some reports on the recognition of the impact sites
such as Buntharik in Ubon Ratchathani and Phanom Phrai
in Roi Et. It is possible that the impact event was a multiple
impact.
Prehistoric Khorat is presented in terms of the
geological history and life evolution. The patterns of history
and evolution are in accord with those of regional and
global scales, but with some peculiar regional events
needing to be explained by further investigations. Mass
extinctions in Khorat, regional, and global scales are still
waiting for more reliable explanations by finding more
evidence to understand the real history of the areas.

Khorat during this Late Cenozoic had a large main river,
the Mun River, with its tributaries, under a warm tropical climate.
Strips of riverside forests were inhabited by apes,
saber-toothed cats, and anthracotheres. Grasslands beyond
the forests were where herds of bovines, rhinoceroses, horses,
and proboscideans roamed while the deer and pigs wandered
along the edge of the grasslands. There were plenty of crocodiles,
Indian gharials, turtles, soft-shelled turtles, fishes, and mollusks
in the river while some hippopotamuses were bathing.
