American Society of Echocardiography 11th Annual Scientific Sessions June 11-14, 2000 Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers Chicago, IL Program Committee Thomas Ryan, MD, Chair Bijoy K. Khandheria, MD, Co-Chair Purpose Echocardiography is an established and important technique for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of cardiovascular disorders. Over the past several years, the clinical use of echocardiography has expanded significantly. The 11th Annual Scien- tific Sessions of the American Society of Echocardiography are an opportu- nity for the membership and all interested practitioners - including cardiologists, internists, primary care physicians, pediatricians, anesthesiolo- gists, surgeons, cardiac sonographers, research scientists, and industry representatives - to explore emerging issues and developments in the field. Format The 4-day program includes invited lecturers, manufacturers’ exhibits, symposia, and abstract and poster presentations describing original work. The featured speakers are national and international leaders and teachers in the field of echocardiography, and the format allows participants considerable interaction with the faculty. In addition to structured symposia summarizing the latest major clinical developments, the program features scientific abstract presentations, meet- the-expert panels, interactive case presentations with an audience response system, cardiac sonographer essentials and how-to sessions, controversies, self-assessment test sessions for improving skills by reading cases with the experts, and an opportunity to see and work with the latest in ultrasound imaging, stress echo and digital image management equipment. Two entertaining evening functions will provide an opportunity for social interaction among partici- pants and faculty, including a gala evening of dinner and entertainment at the Navy Pier and the President’s Reception. The annual Edler Lecture is a corner- stone of education in echocardiography presented each year by one of the foremost authorities in the field. This year, Dr. Abdul Jamil Tajik will present the Edler Lecture immediately following the Research Award presen- tations which begin at 7:50 a.m. on Monday. Special lunch sessions include clinical trials, legislative and regulatory issues, pediatric alternative imaging tech- niques, and a motivational speaker especially for cardiac sonographers. ASE’s three Councils - Council on Cardiac Sonography, Council on Intraoperative Echocardiography, and Council on Pediatric Echocardiography - will have luncheon meetings during the sessions. Intraoperative echocardiography will be taught during a symposium on Sunday and in numerous additional sessions through- out the meeting. These sessions will present lectures on the various aspects of intraoperative echocardiography by noted experts in the field and challeng- ing case presentations by a panel of experts with active audience participa- tion. There will be a Pediatric Track throughout the program to explore issues in pediatric echocardiography. The Sonographer Sessions, organized by the ASE Council on Cardiac Sonography, will focus on the mechan- ics of obtaining appropriate echo/ Doppler images and hemodynamics. Audience ASE’s scientific sessions will benefit all individuals interested in the multiple applications of echocardiography. The novice and advanced participant will have ample educational opportunity. Participation should include individu- als from the fields of cardiac sonography, cardiovascular anesthesiol- ogy, cardiovascular medicine, cardio- vascular surgery, pediatric cardiology, neurology, and nursing, as well as medical residents/fellows and students. CME Credits The American Society of Echocardio- graphy is accredited by the Accredita- tion Council of Continuing Medical Edu- cation (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. The American Society of Echocardio- graphy designates the 3-day Monday through Wednesday sessions as a continuing medical education activity for up to 22 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physicians’ Recognition Award of the American Medical Association and the Intraoperative TEE Symposium on Sunday for up to 7 additional credit hours in Category 1 of the PRA.

Registration Information

RegistrationThe registration fee for Mondaythrough Wednesday, June 12-14, 2000,is $375 for ASE physician members,$475 for non-member physicians, $150for ASE sonographer members, $200for non-member sonographers, and$150 for fellows and students intraining, as well as abstract presenters.The registration fee includes a conti-nental breakfast each morning, thePresident’s Reception on Mondayevening, and Tuesday’s Gala IndustryRelations Night at the historic NavyPier.

Registration for guests for the eveningsocial functions is $75 per person toattend both functions.

Participants may choose to attend anyof 9 scheduled lunch meetings. OnMonday there are lunch sessions onechocardiography in clinical trials,legislative and regulatory issues,pediatric alternative imaging tech-niques, and a motivational speakerespecially for cardiac sonographers.Two lunch programs are offered onTuesday – an update on ASE and acareer curriculum session on publicspeaking. There will be a lunch sessionfor local societies on Wednesday, aswell as for the Council on CardiacSonography and the Council onPediatric Echocardiography.

There is a $10 charge for box lunches.Please sign up for them on yourregistration form. (Box lunches areavailable but purchase is not requiredto attend the sessions.)

There is a separate registration fee of$150 per person to attend the Sympo-sium on IntraoperativeEchocardiography from 8:00 a.m. to4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 11. TheCouncil on IntraoperativeEchocardiography lunch meeting isincluded in the registration fee.

Social FunctionsThe President’s Reception is Mondayevening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. inthe River Exhibition Hall at theSheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers.This is traditionally a great opportu-nity to network and greet old friends.

Tuesday’s “Gala Industry Relations”function is “A Night at the Circus” tobe held in the Grand Ballroom atChicago’s historic lakefront landmark,Navy Pier. The magnificent GrandBallroom, with its 80-foot domedceiling, provides the perfect setting forour modern “Cirque ,” a theatrical andacrobatic European style show.

Admission to both social functions isincluded in the meeting registrationprice. Additional tickets are availablefor guests, at a cost of $75 for bothevents.
