PurposeEchocardiography is an established andimportant technique for the diagnosisand management of a wide range ofcardiovascular disorders. Over the pastseveral years, the clinical use ofechocardiography has expandedsignificantly. The 11th Annual Scien-tific Sessions of the American Societyof Echocardiography are an opportu-nity for the membership and allinterested practitioners - includingcardiologists, internists, primary carephysicians, pediatricians, anesthesiolo-gists, surgeons, cardiac sonographers, research scientists, and industryrepresentatives - to explore emergingissues and developments in the field.
FormatThe 4-day program includes invitedlecturers, manufacturers’ exhibits, symposia, and abstract and posterpresentations describing original work. The featured speakers are national andinternational leaders and teachers inthe field of echocardiography, and theformat allows participants considerableinteraction with the faculty. Inaddition to structured symposiasummarizing the latest major clinicaldevelopments, the program featuresscientific abstract presentations, meet-the-expert panels, interactive case
presentations with an audienceresponse system, cardiac sonographeressentials and how-to sessions, controversies, self-assessment testsessions for improving skills byreading cases with the experts, and anopportunity to see and work with thelatest in ultrasound imaging, stressecho and digital image managementequipment. Two entertaining eveningfunctions will provide an opportunityfor social interaction among partici-pants and faculty, including a galaevening of dinner and entertainment atthe Navy Pier and the President’sReception.
The annual Edler Lecture is a corner-stone of education in echocardiographypresented each year by one of theforemost authorities in the field. Thisyear, Dr. Abdul Jamil Tajik willpresent the Edler Lecture immediatelyfollowing the Research Award presen-tations which begin at 7:50 a.m. onMonday.
Special lunch sessions include clinicaltrials, legislative and regulatory issues, pediatric alternative imaging tech-niques, and a motivational speakerespecially for cardiac sonographers.
ASE’s three Councils - Council onCardiac Sonography, Council onIntraoperative Echocardiography, andCouncil on Pediatric Echocardiography- will have luncheon meetings duringthe sessions. Intraoperativeechocardiography will be taughtduring a symposium on Sunday and innumerous additional sessions through-out the meeting. These sessions willpresent lectures on the various aspectsof intraoperative echocardiography bynoted experts in the field and challeng-ing case presentations by a panel ofexperts with active audience participa-
tion. There will be a Pediatric Trackthroughout the program to exploreissues in pediatric echocardiography. The Sonographer Sessions, organizedby the ASE Council on CardiacSonography, will focus on the mechan-ics of obtaining appropriate echo/Doppler images and hemodynamics.
AudienceASE’s scientific sessions will benefit allindividuals interested in the multipleapplications of echocardiography. Thenovice and advanced participant willhave ample educational opportunity.Participation should include individu-als from the fields of cardiacsonography, cardiovascular anesthesiol-ogy, cardiovascular medicine, cardio-vascular surgery, pediatric cardiology, neurology, and nursing, as well asmedical residents/fellows and students.
CME CreditsThe American Society of Echocardio-graphy is accredited by the Accredita-tion Council of Continuing Medical Edu-cation (ACCME) to sponsor continuingmedical education for physicians.
The American Society of Echocardio-graphy designates the 3-day Mondaythrough Wednesday sessions as acontinuing medical education activityfor up to 22 credit hours in Category 1of the Physicians’ Recognition Awardof the American Medical Associationand the Intraoperative TEE Symposiumon Sunday for up to 7 additional credithours in Category 1 of the PRA.
