Match on action shot

Match on action is when the action of the subject is followed through more than one camera shot/angle, this type of shot is used for the feel of continuity and is most commonly seen between dialogue (OTSS) or in a sports match.

Reverse Shot

Reverse shot is also used for keeping the feel of continuity and to keep the flow of the shots. It is performed by switching between 2 or more subjects used along with the OTSS and the 180 degrees rule.

180 degrees rule.

The 180° rule is a basic guideline that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle

Recording findings…

We found the cameras tended to go out of focus very often and cause the shots to be very low quality, luckily for us, the majority of our camera angles will be still shots, enabling the camera to focus its self with easier than if we were to use them as moving shots.

With Yasmin making a guest appearance. Meaning Yasmin Wadsworth and Fay Sawyn will be doing most of the camera work for our shots, although we will all be taking turns, when filming each other whilst in a singular character shots. The Majority of the camera shots we use will most likely be OTSS, Long shots, Close ups & Mid-Shots because we are filming in a small area of which we can only do certain shots, we cant perform and aerial shot of the room we are in as we cannot acquire the right equipment, same scenario applies to other shots we wont use.

Locations

Shot on the left is the corridor we originally decided to use as our intro to the scene that I shall be walking down and shot on the right is the room in which Reece will be enrolled on the pirate ship by Brett, where he will be waiting.

Dialogue for preliminary task

*Reece walks down the corridor and knocks at the door.*Bret; (Inside room, muffled) Come In! *Reece walks into the room.*Reece; Aye aye, Captain Jolly Roger!Bret; Hi there Shipmate Mac Daddy, take a seat my love.Reece; Can I join your crew, CaptainBret; yea’ m’heartyReece; thanks mate*Bret hands Reece Pirate wear*Bret; No Problem, Argh!*Reece walks out of the room, taking the pirate wear**Bret pops his head around the door and shoots Reece for no reason*Bret; Yarharharhar. (Evil pirate laugh.)

Changes to dialogue

• Firstly, we changed when Reece walks into the room whilst knocking on the door to him walking up the stairs. Because there was no door we had to change it and Bret didn’t need to say the line “Come In” after Reece knocks on the door.

• Secondly we changed part of the script. We added the line “No problem, here take this!” After Bret has said this he gives Reece a pass and he puts it on.

• We also added a cameo role from Yasmin, she had one line which was “Oh Captain!” Because a teacher walked in on our filming so we had to cover the mistake, this ended the film.

Evaluation• Does your media product use match-on-action, shot reverse shot and

the 180 degree rule in ways that are similar to or different from ‘real’ media examples? What are the similarities/differences and why have you done it this way?

• Our media product does use all three shots in ways that are similar to the examples that we have found. When Bret and Reece were talking there was shots of the 180 degree rule and shot reverse-shot. When Reece was walking up and down the stairs you saw shots of match-on-action. The similarities are when Reece and Bret are talking the shot reverse shot is the same as the example we have.

• What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to film using a camera and how to edit on I movie on a Mac book pro. I also learnt how to hold the camera steady and film different angles and shots like shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match-on-action. I also learnt how to upload the video files onto the Mac book pro’s software. I also made a blogger account and learnt how to post what we were doing in our lessons adding images and links.

• How will you use what you have learnt in preliminary task in your main task?

• I will use the same programmes as I have already and it will be a lot quicker and easier when it comes to filming and editing; adding in effects and cutting and pasting the different clips together and merging them so they flow. Also we will be using a tripod in our main task as the still shots in the preliminary task were a bit shaky and not that professional.
