A conversation starter...

Since 2010, Premex Group has had a presence of sorts on various social media, with the companydeveloping first a profile on Twitter and subsequently a busy LinkedIn company page.

Our reasons for this are probably not that different from yours. We acknowledged that, in the shortperiod since they’ve turned global communications upside down, social media have been variouslyembraced by lawyers, insurance companies and other professionals; many of whom we count asvalued customers.

In this survey, conducted in association with RTS Media, we consider the bare facts behind thenumbers of fans and followers that law firms themselves have managed to generate. There’scertainly more questions than answers when you consider the figures on their own, but I believethey tell an interesting story in and of themselves.

While the figures are open to interpretation, as a conversation starter they are fascinating. One thing which is immediately apparentis the varying degree of enthusiasm there is for Facebook. For the purposes of clarity, these numbers represent only those pagesattached to the firms themselves rather than any subsidiary brand or trading names operated by them. Where close rivals on theTwitter or Linkedin league table can be compared relatively easily, if you throw Facebook into the mix, the waters become muchmore opaque.

The total follower count for Twitter from our cohort of law firms was 237,144, while LinkedIn had around 10% more at 260,377.Facebook followers across almost 200 firms number just 48,676.

Of course these numbers are changing all the time. DLA Piper has added a further 300 to its LinkedIn follower count in just sevenworking days between the time our survey was carried out, and the moment this report went to press. By the time you read this, thefirm’s followers on that network will most likely have topped 21,000.

Indeed, LinkedIn has carved a strong niche for itself and for some law firms – largely members of the Magic Circle – it has proven afertile ground for building an audience. No great surprise you might say, but what if your brand has a business-to-consumerrelationship to maintain? Which network is appropriate for your communications efforts? Why are so few law firms on Facebookdespite these figures showing that those who have invested time in it can build a following as large as 8,000+?

Social media has changed the way we communicate and consume content. Premex’s own monthly newsletter, PremExtra deliversinformation and opinion primarily via email and on a static web site but equally, it uses online networks to share content with ournetwork of followers who may prefer dipping in and out of the headlines.
