Everything Old is New Again:Pop culture continues to re-visit the 1920’s.“Downton Abbey”…from the popular television series you see headpieces, high necklines, calla lilies for bouquets, soft colors and rich textures.Gatsby…Glitz and glam in everything from headpieces to décor. Gowns feature beading and soft fabrics. Men are clean cut and shaven. It’s Art Deco with pearls and long gloves, drop waists and high illusion necklines.Retro…Think Mad Men with bold colors and shapes.

Refined Woodland:More than rustic, it’s bringing nature into your wedding from the woodsy setting to the invitations. Fresh flowers serve as the bride’s headpiece. Florals may be more greenery for the bouquets and arrangements.

Old World Opulence:Perfect for an elegant ballroom with swirling ball gowns, long gloves, pearls, lace and leather. With this style, you’ll see glitz, metallics, calligraphy, formal china and stemware, formal dining with multiple courses and elaborate foods and cakes. Everyone and everything is dressed up to the max.

Grecian:Today’s runways are featuring these flowing silhouettes. Weddings will be no different with white, metallic and pops of blue. Ode to Greece.

Marbelized:This is a faux look that can be duplicated in everything from paper to cake frosting.

Pop Art Graphics:These weddings inspirations are from modern art and comic books. Color is important. Wedding dresses will have shorter hemlines and be more streamlined and simplified. Of course, there will be pops of color everywhere.

Geometric:Take a hint from today’s fashion. You are seeing a lot of geometrics in everything from clothes to home décor. Geometric means clean lines, sleek silhouettes, patterns and prints.

High Tech Receptions:You either love it or hate it. For those that love high tech, you’ll see hash tags, photo booths where the pictures can be shared immediately on Facebook, Instagram, and other social media. Charging stations at weddings can be disguised with flowers and greenery.

The Phone Check:This is for those that hate high tech. Guests will be asked to check their phone.

Metallic Cakes:Cakes are all gold or silver much like you’re seeing in today’s fashion and recent bridal runways.

Halo Veils:These beautiful head pieces can be made from anything, fresh flowers to beautiful beading. Imagine your veil flowing from the back of the Halo.

For a wedding you and your guests will remember for years to come, pick one thing and make it your signature. We can never stress enough that your wedding is as individual as you. Create your own trend!

THE PERFECT WEDDING HAIR

this season’s top hairstyles

The Chignon: Typically a low bun on the side of the head that adds softness and will accompany any dress perfectly. This style is best with headbands or tiaras, and veils or birdcages. Consider this if you are having a vintage style wedding.

The Braided Look: You might find a braid amongst flowing hair curled at the ends, with braids going through on the top of your head. This romantic look creates a look that stepped off of the red carpet.

A Knot: The perfect pairing for a more couture dress. It’s simply a knot in the back of your head, and how appropriate because you will be tying the knot!

Beach Waves: A very popular look that can be achieved in a number of different ways. If you have a curling wand or a hair straightener lying around, you might want to use it! If using a curling wand, just twirl it around the wand and hair spray the curl, thats it! If using a hair straightener, simply twist your hair and flat iron it, thats it!

Perfect Ponytail: You can channel the 60’s by simply having your hairdresser tease your hair into a high ponytail, making it look effortless. This will be the perfect addition to any gown.

For Short Hair: Consider doing a short bob with finger waves, and adding earrings to compliment the look! This will look great! If you don’t have a short bob, consider having your stylist tuck your hair under and create an up-do that way, this is chic and very stylish.

For bangs: Consider doing a face framing braid just over your bangs to create a softer look. Then, curl and twist the ends of your hair, and instantly your hair looks great!

17

Page 20: Premier Bride Directory 2014

Bridal Sizingthe ugly truth

Be mindful that when shopping for a gown, you might have to go up a size or two or three depending on the designer. All designers go by a different sizing chart, so you might be a 10 in one company, whereas you might be a 14 in another company, depending on their standards.

Be sure to wear your undergarments during your sizing and make sure you have good posture. Posture can affect your measurements, believe it or not. Make sure that whoever is measuring you knows where to correctly measure you, and how to measure. If you are inexperienced, consider going to an alterations person, or a bridal shop. Don’t call your measurements into the salon, because if the measurements are not correct, this could affect your gown’s fit, and there might not be time to re-order. B

• Have your gown pressed and padded at least two weeks early.

• While you’re wearing the gown, use common sense. Protect it from moisture and mud, and lift the train above dirty floors. However, don’t be so cautious that you don’t enjoy yourself.

• Use plastic sheets to cover questionable areas outdoors.

• Keep track of white beverage spills, such as white wines, champagne and soda. Left untreated, yellowing will occur.

• Consign your gown to the cleaners even if it seems in perfect shape after the wedding. Perspiration and other obscure stains will make their mark over time, and become embedded in a matter of weeks. Make sure the

cleaner knows what caused any spots.

• Only mend tears when you’re sure the fabric can stand the strain.

• Store your gown carefully. Plastic bags seal in humidity and high temperatures, which cause mildew. Hangers stress sheer fabrics, such as lace, organza or marquisette.

• Invest in a dust-proof “heirloom box,” which preserves delicate beads and fabrics and retards wrinkling.

• Really paranoid? Try hermetic sealing, which protects the gown indefinitely.

• Only remove your wedding gown on special occasions after it has been stored.

YOUR WEDDING CAKE: a sweet ending to a special dayIt´s the sweetest wedding task of them all – deciding on dessert for your big day. Tradition calls for a tiered cake with a decoration on top which can be fresh flowers, a porcelain bride and groom or initials of the couple. Today brides and bakers are breaking cake molds to create fun and fresh options that add the icing to your wedding. Take in all the options, work with a pro to make it custom and whatever you do, don´t miss out on any tasting!4

CateringThe perfect wedding cuisinePerhaps the only part of a wedding that’s gotten a bad rap throughout the years is the food. Guests usually expect a dry chicken breast and some sticky rice pilaf, so spicing up the dinner and giving it a personal spin is the perfect way to make your wedding memorable and give your guests some fuel to dance the night away.

Depending on your religion you might decide to forget about tradition and create your own wedding vows for your big day. The sky is really the limit in this case and there is no better way to begin your life together than to take the time to really let one another know how you feel.

If you do decide that you want to write your own vows meet with the officiant to discuss what you want to do. Certain vows must be kept in the ceremony in order for the wedding to be legal.

When you do personalize your wedding vows think about those things that are really important to you such as the meaning of marriage, why you are planning to spend your life together and how you will make this arrangement work for better or worse. Too many times nowadays couples don’t realize that marriage is supposed to be a lasting

bond of togetherness through the good and the bad times.

No matter how far astray you want your wedding vows to go it might be a good idea to start with the familiar. There is definitely something beautiful about the words in a wedding ceremony and perhaps just adding a few of your own personalized additions throughout the wedding is all that will be needed to add that special touch.

Of course, you want to make sure that you and your fiancé are in agreement when it comes to changing the vows during the wedding. Talk about the things that make your life together unique and different and the plans you have for your future. One really special way to say “I love you” is to remember why you fell in love in the first place. Often during the hassles of the wedding this is easy to forget. Perhaps bringing it all back together in front of your family and friends will make a bond that will never be broken.

Talk about the experiences you have shared together while making memories. These are often very important moments frozen in time and will also help to build your future as you look ahead at what makes your marriage so important to both of you. What do you want for your future? This will be a good start as to what you want to promise each other as you stand before God and man becoming man and wife.

Another fun thing to do might be have you and your fiancé write your vows apart and then come together to read them before you decide exactly what you will read during the ceremony. This will be a good way to discover any hidden feelings and you might be surprised at how identical your feelings really are, this is the mark of a great love.

If you and your fiancé have an eclectic style or personality then by all means let that come out in your personalized vows. In the long run in might make it easier for you to express your real feelings anyway.

CHOOSING WHERE TO WEDyour ceremony location

For centuries churches and synagogues have been the traditional choice for the sacred act of exchanging vows. Lending an air of reverence and dignity to even the most casual of ceremonies, these holy places have created the perfect setting for the formal commitment of marriage. There are many unique options for couples who, for whatever reason, would prefer an alternate location. Consider holding the event at a non-denominational church or chapel. These locations usually have fewer rules and guidelines than other formal houses of worship, yet still provide a spiritual setting. Have the ceremony at the reception venue. Couples often choose this option as a convenience for their guests, minimizing the distance one must travel from ceremony to reception. Facilities that provide this option normally

have separate areas for each event, or a plan for quickly converting the room. Sometimes places with the most personal significance make the best ceremony locations. For example, a park you walked through on your first date, the backyard where one of you grew up or a relative’s home where you enjoy spending time are all good choices. If you love the outdoors, consider holding your ceremony at a city park, the beach, a zoo, or even at the foot of a national landmark. If you’re a little on the daring and outrageous side, you might consider exchanging vows while sky diving from a plane, scuba diving, or in a hot air balloon. Whatever your preference, there is no right or wrong way to say “I do.”

Today, planning a wedding is more complicated than ever. Most couples have high expectations for their special day, but are novices at planning such a big event.

SAY IT WITH FLOWERSwedding flowers

Flowers have adorned weddings for hundreds of years, and for good reason: they are beautiful! Breathtaking bouquets, gorgeous centerpieces, fresh boutonnieres… these colorful gifts from nature will give you and your guests a visual feast on your wedding day. Your wedding flowers will help set the mood and theme for the entire celebration, so be sure to give this area some time and attention and, most of all, find a fabulous florist.

Where to start

Start your research right away, from the first bridal magazine you open and the first bridal web site you visit. (Premierbride.com includes beautiful floral photos in our Idea Gallery.) Collect photos of anything you like in a file, to share with the florist you select. It may also be helpful to establish a clear list of anything you definitely don’t like. It’s also helpful to have some elements of the wedding established before you meet with potential florists, so that they can offer more

specific suggestions. For example, your wedding gown will certainly influence the style of your event – is it streamlined, modern and simple? Or heavily beaded, traditional and ornate? Also knowing your wedding colors, ceremony and reception locations, and wedding date will be necessary before your florist can give you any concrete ideas that will match the tone, colors, style and season of your wedding.

Finding a fabulous florist

Find some potential florists at bridal shows, online or through local print publications such as this one, and select up to four to meet with in person. (Interviewing more than this could easily get overwhelming!) Your goal is to find someone who has a style that you love, a personality that you mesh with, and is also an organized professional. Incredible floral design is pointless if they’re not at the church in time!

Once you’ve selected your florist, he or she can help you determine exactly what you will need for your wedding and start narrowing down which flowers to include. Visit the “Checklists & Questions to Ask” section under “Planning” on premierbride.com for questions to ask potential florists, flowers available by season and more, to help get you started.

Bring the following items with you when you meet with your florist, for your first big planning meeting: a photo of your wedding dress, photos and other information regarding your ceremony and reception sites, images to show your likes and dislikes, and fabric swatches of your bridesmaids’ dresses and any other wedding colors. And one more thing to bring with you: your budget amount! It’s quite critical that you share this with your designer, so that they can meet your needs at a price you can afford.

keeping flowers fresh• Have delivered flowers be well misted and in boxes with cellophane or other packaging so they get off to a fresh start.• Keep them out of the direct sunlight as much as possible, as the sun will speed up the wilting process.• If you’re preserving your bouquet, get it to the floral preservation specialist after the wedding as soon as possible. Ask them for instructions on how to keep your bouquet in the best shape possible before it gets to them. • If you’re keeping any bouquet stems in water before the wedding, be sure to dry them off quite thoroughly before handing them out to avoid any water drips or stains on dresses.

YOUR GUESTSfrom near and far

When planning your wedding, it’s important to consider the needs of your out-of-town guests, many of whom will be traveling great distances to share in your joyous occasion. You’ll want to make certain their visit is an enjoyable one. Most hotels provide a discounted rate when you reserve a block of rooms. The number of rooms required to qualify for a group rate will vary by hotel. Some hotels offer additional services such as a hospitality suite for your guests to gather for breakfast or cocktails and, if needed, special check-out considerations. It’s a good idea to consider the different economic situations of your out-of-town guests. Provide two or three options to create a comfortable price range to choose from. While some of your guests may be on a limited

budget, others will be combining their vacation with your wedding.Traditionally, it is the duty of the bride’s family to recommend accommodations for out-of-town guests. It is not their responsibility, however, to pay for them. Include printed information in the wedding invitation such as toll-free numbers for each hotel, the name under which the reservation is held and hotel shuttle information so your guests can call the hotel directly to make their reservations. It is appropriate for the bride and groom to arrange transportation to and from the ceremony and reception locations for all out-of-town guests. It is perfectly acceptable to arrange for family and friends to provide the transportation.

Gone are the days of the bride’s family paying for the wedding. For now, it’s more like whoever has it, usually pays, even if it’s the couple themselves. As the average age of couples who are getting married rises, this is beginning to happen more and more. However, even as traditions change, it is useful to know what your family should expect.

Following are examples of how financial obligations have been traditionally distributed. Remember, though, that by making a financial contribution, some family members may feel entitled to contribute to the planning, too. Your family, and your ability to deal with their input, will largely determine how much tradition you keep and how much you ignore.

The Bride’s Responsibility:-Personal stationary-Wedding ring for groom-Wedding gift for groom-Gifts for attendants-Lodging for out-of-town attendants (optional)-Her physical examination

The Groom’s Responsibility:-Bride’s ring-Honeymoon-Wedding gift for bride-Bridal bouquet and going-away corsage-Boutonnieres for all men in wedding party-Mother’s corsages-His physical examination-Gifts for the best man, ushers-Gloves, ties or ascots for men in wedding party-Marriage license-Lodging for out-of-town attendants (opt.)-Fee for clergy or judge.

Music & EntertainmentThe sound of romanceWeddings are rather visual affairs; from the fancy dress to the picture-perfect venue, there’s a lot to see. But nothing sets the mood quite like music. From stirring melodies at the ceremony, to easy background tunes at cocktail hour, to up-tempo beats that get the dance party started, your choices in music are the soundtrack to your special day.

YOUR WEDDING

CEREMONY come together to celebrate your love

Your wedding ceremony makes the marriage official, so you want to make it special. The wedding ceremony can be celebrated in many different ways, and can be held just about anywhere. The ceremony itself can express your individual personality, so get creative. Keep it simple: When planning your ceremony, keep in mind that if you stray too far from a traditional ceremony, you might loose people. In keeping with the traditional ceremony, tweak little things, or have your officiant tell a story about you as a couple. If your officiant knows you very well, this might be the perfect way to incorporate funny stories about you, and how you got together!

Keep it personal: You may or may not want to write your vows, and that’s okay. Make sure that if you do write your own vows that you keep them simple, and personal. Include something that only you and your husband will understand; this makes your vows that much more special. If you don’t want to write your own vows, that’s okay too. Just keep in mind that you can change the vows to “I will, or I do” depending on your preference. In terms of length of the ceremony, this can also be altered. If you are having an early ceremony, you might want to change the length, otherwise you might have some sleepy guests! This is also true with evening weddings, as guests might be hungry, and ready for your amazing dinner. You can speak with your officiant to discuss your options to find the perfect ceremony for you!

PhotographyA PICTURE PERFECT DAYFinding a photographer that fits your styleThe old saying “Take a picture, it’ll last longer” will never ring more true than on your wedding day. After months of fittings, tastings, and detailed planning, your special day will seem to come and go in the blink of an eye. But you can remember, relive, and cherish each moment through the magic of photography.

You would think it would be easy to choose the right wedding colors for your big day right? Perhaps you want that periwinkle blue that has been your favorite since you were a little girl. Or what if black is your favorite color, is that appropriate for your wedding color in the middle of August?

Overall, when you choose your wedding colors you are also choosing the look and feel of the bridesmaid dresses, the flowers, the invitations and even the look of the ceremony and reception. Not an easy task, but overall the decision should be yours and you should enjoy the freedom to make your big day the one you have dreamed of since you were a little girl.

Depending on the season and how festive you want to be you can have fun with winter, spring, summer and fall. Since many brides choose the summer for their big day let’s start there.

Bright colors are always popular during this most beautiful time of the year. A good idea is to take

advantage of all the flowers that are in bloom during the summer months from pink to red to yellow to bright blues and purples. Summer is also a time to enjoy the sun so you could choose yellow or gold for the occasion and add some touches of pastel for a soft touch on invitations and reception accents.

Popular summer colors include teal paired with silver and you could also dye flowers teal to play up the mood and atmosphere. What about red and pink? Roses are the perfect flower for this color scheme.

Many couples choose autumn to say their “I do’s” and this season bespeaks bold colors with a touch of harvest. It’s a time when the leaves are falling from the trees and burnt orange, gold and red are in the air.

It might not be a bad idea to incorporate brown during this time of year and consider matching it with terra cotta or copper or even ivory. Red is always popular during the autumn season and can be matched with deep red roses to keep the mood one of love.

For winter think the holidays, snow and cozy fireplaces that make this season one of the most romantic of all. While stark silvers and blues are an option, the color of evergreen also promises the mood will be festive. Flowers can be a combination of pine cones, holly leaves and even snow and ice. Since silver is such a popular winter color matching accents might include burgundy or navy blue.

The spring is when everything begins to grow again. Pastel colors are popular during this time of year so think white, pink and even lavender. Flowers that go well with a light color scheme are tulips and peonies. Keep the wedding light and airy like the season and a dreamy feeling will surely abound.Overall, the best wedding is the one that you add the special touches to incorporating you and your spouse’s ideas into the biggest event of your life.

TransportationGETTING THERE:Wedding Day TransportationThe moments between the ceremony and the reception are giddy, exciting ones, and it’s only fitting to be whisked off in a carriage or ride off into the sunset. But those happy endings aren’t even practical. So even if the transportation between the ceremony and reception isn’t fit for a Hollywood screenplay, here are some tips to make it as fun, affordable and memorable as the rest of your day.

TRENDS IN FORMALWEAR

grooms have options too

Vests win. While cummerbunds are always a classic tuxedo accessory, currently vests are more popular.

Current collars. Notched collars on jackets are becoming more popular, beating out winged and shawl collars.

Trendy ties. Dressy standard neckties, often called four-in-hand ties or Windsor knotted ties, are becoming more popular, although bow ties will always be classic.

Going pleatless. Shirts without pleats and pointed collars are a current look, as are flat-front dress or tuxedo pants.

Complimentary accessories. Groomsmen can compliment the groom instead of match the bridesmaids. (i.e. Have the groom in a silver vest with black detailing and the groomsmen in black vests with silver detailing.)

BRIDAL SHOW AND TELLeverything in one place

The groom has proposed; you’ve accepted. Now the planning begins. The only problem is that you and your groom probably work full-time jobs and have hundreds of day-to-day errands and responsibilities. So where do you find the time to plan a wedding?

A bridal show affords couples the opportunity to meet photographers, florists, caterers, bakery representatives, musicians, DJs and many other wedding professionals, all conveniently set up under one roof. These shows also provide the opportunity to sample wares, view vendor’s work and compare your level of comfort with other vendors you may already be considering.

Many bridal shows feature fashion shows, where the latest in men’s formalwear, bridesmaid’s dresses, and

bridal gowns are presented. It is a good idea to bring a note pad and pencil, so you can take notes on your favorite dresses, tuxedos and the stores that offer them.

Bridal shows range in size from 40 to 200 exhibitor booths. They normally take place on weekends during the months of January, February, March, August and September. In addition to fashion shows, food samples and entertainment are also featured. There are numerous door prizes and contests to enter so bring stick on labels with your name, address and wedding date to make registering for prizes easier. Local bridal shows generally advertise on the radio, in bridal magazines, and in the newspaper. Local merchants, especially bridal salons, have information on shows in your area as well.

Know your overall budget BEFORE you start planning your wedding - it’s one of the rst issues you and your ancé should discuss. Set your priorities based on what is most

important to both of you and spend accordingly. For example, if the meal is the most important element of your wedding, you’ll want to allocate

a greater portion of your budget to it.
