By looking at the location and outcome of all shots in the Premier League over the last six seasons, we are able to

assign each shot a probability of resulting in a goal. When we apply this methodology to the current campaign, we

can determine which players are scoring more goals than would be expected according to the chance each shot has

    of nding the net.

Using the same methodology as the Goal Residual metric, we are able to determine the number of goals wed expect

a goalkeeper to concede in the number of games theyve played this season. By measuring the actual number of

Goals Conceded against Expected Goals Conceded, we can provide a gure for Residual Goals Conceded which

reects the level of a goalkeepers performance over the course of the season.

While the quantity of goals a player scores reects the quality of their performances to an extent, the context of

those goals is equally as important. This chart highlights the players that have scored the highest percentage of their

teams goals and the proportion of those goals that either levelled the score or put them in the lead.

The 2012/13 season was another busy campaign for

Premier League clubs in the transfer market.

From 1st June 2012 through to the loan deadline on 28th

March 2013, clubs in the top ight spent an estimated

total of 589.2m on 136 players at an average cost

of 4.33m. Of those 136 deals, 40 (29.4%) were free

transfers, with loans accounting for 25 (18.4%) of all

players signed by Premier League clubs.

With half of teams spending 30m or more this season,

2012/13 saw the heavy spending of Premier League

clubs continue unabated despite UEFAs Financial Fair

Play regulation and the prevailing economic conditions.

Recouping 274.1m in transfer income, the leagues net

    spend this season was -315.1m.

    JANUARY 2013 WINDOW

Using data from Englands top two divisions, we can see how the total cost of permanent deals changed throughout

the 2013 January window. Most notably, in the last three days of the window, the total cost of transfers increased by

78% even though only 39% more players were sold than average.

    TRANSFER AGE DISTRIBUTION

Looking at all permanent transfers and

loan deals across the Premier League

and Championship, we can gain an

understanding of market patterns withregard to

    player age.

One of the most obvious trends is that

permanent deals involved players who were

30 months older on average than those

involved in loan deals. Furthermore, nearly

two-thirds of all players loaned were 22 years

old or younger, compared to just a third of all

    permanent transfers.
