from the presidentEach year, along with colleagues from PBS stations across America, I visit Washington, D.C., to meet with members of Congress to discuss public media and demonstrate the value of our service to the community. I leave these meetings with a renewed sense of the importance of our mission, and the realization that we need to do more to shape a healthier political climate to support public television.

Unlike public broadcasters in other countries, American public television and radio stations receive limited government funding. At KCTS 9, federal funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is less than 10 percent of our budget. The majority of our support—more than 75 percent—comes from viewers like you.

Your support is crucial to our ability to continue to serve as a trusted source for the arts, in-depth journalism, history and children’s programming, free of commercials and available to all at no cost. 1 12-ounce bag fresh cranberries 1 cup sparkling apple ciderB/e teaspoon vanilla extract C/d cup granulated sugar B/c teaspoon pumpkin pie or apple pie spice 1 pinch salt

Rinse the cranberries and discard any withered berries or stems. Place in a saucepan with the apple cider and vanilla. Add the dry ingredients, stir, and bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Once the mixture boils, reduce heat to a simmer and keep stirring so that the sugar does not burn or boil over. Once the berries have burst, turn off heat; cover and leave to cool.

This recipe works best when it is made the day before and left to set overnight. It’s also delicious on waffles or pancakes!
