AKC Code of Sportsmanship

PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC’s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsman ship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented.

• Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace.

• Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior.

• The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors.

• The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism.

• The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge’s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs.

• The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge.

• The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs.

• Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors.

• Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport.

• Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them.

• Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock.

• Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them.

• Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog.

• Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport.


AKC National Owner-Handled Series

(Remember to check the box near the bottom of the entry form)

The AKC National Owner-Handled Series is a non-titling competition for dogs that are exhibited by their owners that are not professional handlers. All dogs that are owner-handled and are not owned or exhibited by professional handlers* meet the requirements for this competition. Exhibitors must declare their dog is Owner-Handled eligible at the time of entry using the check box on the entry form. Eligible dogs will be identified by an asterisk in the judge's book, steward's book & the catalog. Dogs must be handled throughout the breed level competition for the regular show by an eligible owner. Professional handlers, household members and current assistants** to professional handlers may not exhibit the dog in any competition during the entire show. Owner-Handled Best of Breed will be selected from the dogs that are eligible to compete in the Best of Breed competition including Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and winners of the non-regular classes.

• If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is Owner-Handled competition eligible, it will automatically be Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety and be eligible to compete in both the regular as well as the Owner-Handled group.

• If the Best of Breed/Variety winner is not eligible for Owner-Handled competition and the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety is eligible, the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety will compete against the eligible exhibits of the other sex to determine Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

• If neither the Best of Breed nor the Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed/Variety are Owner-Handled competition eligible and Select Dog & Select Bitch are both eligible, the judge is to choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the Selects and eligible Winners Dog or Winners Bitch.

• If one of the Selects is eligible, excuse all Champions and non-regular class winners of the same sex and then choose Best Owner-Handled exhibit from the remaining dogs of the opposite sex including the eligible Winners.

• If Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Select Dog & Select Bitch are not eligible, the judge may choose any eligible dog remaining in the ring including Winners Dog or Winners Bitch as Owner-Handled Best of Breed/Variety.

• If the Best of Winners is eligible, the other Winner is ineligible since it was defeated. • No class dogs other than the Winners Dog & Winners Bitch are eligible to return to the ring.

The breed will not be represented in the Owner-Handled Group if there is no eligible dog competing in the Best of Breed or in Best of Winners competition.

* Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers' organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years.

* *A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or assisting a professional handler at the show or any time during the cluster/weekend.

AKC Sanctioned 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy Competition

One combined class will be offered for breeds and varieties of dogs that are (4) four months & under (6) six months and are Toy breeds as described in Chapter 3, Section 1 of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows. There will be a selection of best 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy in each breed/Variety, each Best 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy in Breed/Variety winner will then compete in the toy group for First through Fourth Placements. An AKC registration number or AKC litter number will be required for entries of an AKC recognized breed. A foreign born dog may enter this class if they are registered in the country of origin. Dogs are required to be vaccinated (including rabies) in accordance with their veterinarian's protocol in order to avoid inadvertent transmission of illness by/to puppies not yet fully immunized. Dogs that are owned or co-owned by a professional handler may compete in this class, but must be handled by a non-professional handler. Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers' organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years. Dogs may not be exhibited by current assistants or household members of a professional handler. A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or, assisting a professional handler at the show or any show during the cluster/weekend. AKC Rules in Dealing with Misconduct will be applicable to any person and dog entered at this competition. All applicable rules found in Rules Applying to Dog Shows will govern the conduct of this competition unless these regulations state otherwise. Exhibitors should plan on opening the mouth of their puppy for the judges. Breed standard disqualifications such as color, height, weight or dentition shall not be a point of consideration in the judging process for this 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy in Show Competition. NO PUPPIES UNDER THE AGE Of SIX (6) MONTHS, EXCEPT THOSE PARTICIPATING IN THE 4-6 MONTH PUPPY COMPETITION, MAY BE ON THE GROUNDS.

* The show will be open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day. * Equipment may be left in the building Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. * Dogs may NOT be left in the building at night. * Building will be locked between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM each night. * Dogs may arrive any time before the scheduled time of judging. * No Mesh Crates, Puppy Pens, X-pens, Mats or Rugs are allowed. * No tables (other than grooming tables) will be allowed in the crating area. * Entry fees will not be refunded in the event that a dog is absent, disqualified, excused

by a veterinarian or judge, or barred from competition by action of the show committee. If, because of riot, civil disobedience or other acts beyond the control of the management, it is impossible to open or complete the show, no refund of entry fee will be made.

* Errors on entry blanks are the responsibility of the person making out the form. No entry fee will be refunded in the event of such error after the published closing date.

* Neither the Club nor the Show Secretary will be responsible for loss or damage to any dog entered, nor for the possessions of any exhibitor or spectator. The Delegates at the December 2018 meeting approved a revision to Chapter 16 Section 1 of the Rules Applying to Dog Shows. This revision, which relates to the calculation of points for Best of Winners, is effective January 1, 2019. The revised rule provides a provision where a single point may be earned by the dog awarded Best of Winners if neither sex had sufficient dogs in competition to qualify for one point for its breed in the region the show was held. The revised paragraph 5 of Chapter 16 Section 1 will read as follows: The dog awarded Best of Winners shall be credited with the number of points calculated for Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, whichever is greater. If no points are credited to the dog awarded Best of Winners, the regular class dogs of both sexes shall be counted in calculating championship points. A maximum of one championship point can be awarded when combining sexes for the Best of Winners point calculation. In Summary:

• The championship criteria remains unchanged • The sexes may only be combined if there is not a point available in both sexes. • The combination of animals has to be compared to the applicable point

schedule to determine is a point was earned. To explain, when neither sex has sufficient entry for one point, Best of Winners will now earn one point if the sum of the class dogs and class bitches equals or exceeds the number required for one point in the breed for that sex in the region the show was held.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP AKC Junior Handler Numbers are now required for entry in Junior Showmanship Competition. Numbers may be obtained from the American Kennel Club - PHONE (919) 854-0195. NOVICE CLASS: For Boys and Girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show and who, at the time entries close, have not won three First Places in a Novice Class at a licensed or member show. OPEN CLASS: For Boys and Girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years old on the day of the show and who, at the time entries close, have won three First Places in a Novice Class at a licensed or member show. MASTER CLASS: This class will be for boys and girls who are at least 9 years old and under 18 years on the day of the show, and who have won the 10 first place wins in an Open class with competition to be eligible to enter the Limited Class Competition. The calendar for this class will be November 1 - October 31 of the following year. All Juniors meeting the criteria for this class are required to enter the Master Class and may change their entry the day of the show if entries have already closed. Once the eligibility time frame for that year has passed all participants return to the Open Class to complete for the following year.

AWARD OF MERIT

The Italian Greyhound Club of America offers Award of Merit rosettes to be awarded to not more than 10% of the Best of Breed entry. Following the selection of Best of Breed, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex, the judge at his discretion, may award all or none of the Award of Merit rosettes offered at this specialty. The Award of Merit acknowledges those dogs that were considered, indicating the judge's recognition of an exceptional specimen of the Breed. Awards of Merit may be awarded at the judge's discretion to any entry in the Best of Breed ring. It is acceptable for the judge to award winners dog or bitch or a veteran dog or bitch that is not a champion.

black, ASCOB, parti-color), Beagles (not exceeding 13 in., over 13 in. but not exceeding 15 in.), Dachshunds (longhaired, smooth, wirehaired), Collies (rough, smooth), Bull Terriers (colored, white), Manchester Terriers (standard, toy), Chihuahuas (smooth coat, long coat), English Toy Spaniels (King Charles and Ruby, Blenheim and Prince Charles), Poodles (toy, miniature, standard).

2. The following categories of dogs may be entered and shown in Best of Breed competition: Dogs that are Champions of Record and dogs which, according to their owners’ records, have completed the requirements for a championship, but whose championships are unconfirmed. The showing of unconfirmed Champions in Best of Breed competition is limited to a period of 90 days from the date of the show where the dog completed the requirements for a championship.

3. (Event Class) Consult the classifi in this premium list. If the event class in which you are entering your dog is divided, then, in addition to designating the class, specify the particular division of the class in which you are entering your dog, i.e, age division, color division, weight division.

4. A dog must be entered in the name of the person who actually owned it at the time entries for an event closed. If a registered dog has been acquired by a new owner it must be entered in the name of its new owner in any event for which entries closed after the date of acquirement, regardless of whether the new owner has received the registration certificate indicating that the dog is recorded in his/her name.
