ABOUT NEAS NEAS is an internationally respected Quality Assurance scheme for English Language Teaching (ELT) centres. The mission of NEAS is to establish and uphold high standards of education and service provision in ELT amongst member centres that maintain their Quality Endorsement status.

NEAS convenes an annual conference for those in leadership and management positions within the ELT sector .

CONFERENCE HISTORYThe conference focuses on issues typically facing ELT leaders and managers, the content determined by canvassing the needs and interests of participants .

The conference goal is to improve the professional competence of those in the role of ELT educational leaders and managers by:

• providing practical training in specific day to day management tasks;

• promoting opportunities for the acquisition of specialised management knowledge and skills;

• heightening participants’ understanding of broader issues critical to educational leadership and management in ELT;

• providing the opportunity for educational leaders and managers to come together to share their experiences and insights in a supportive environment; and

• introducing new and innovative concepts and technologies to the ELT sector .

NEAS promises an exciting conference line-up in 2016!

NEAS has continued to set the pace of the Quality agenda for the ELICOS sector in Australia and Southeast Asia since our last conference .

It’s worth noting that NEAS is the largest and longest serving provider of quality assurance services to the English language teaching sector south of the equator! NEAS’ position as an international leader is also on show, and we welcome representation from QALEN partners including English New Zealand and FELTOM .

This year’s event underlines NEAS’ role in the sector as a driver of positive change and improvement in English language teaching, with new technologies and methodologies being showcased . The four conference themes focus on pedagogic disruption, thought leadership, collaboration and intrapreneurship or being an ‘employed’ entrepreneur!

We would like to welcome Senator the Hon Richard Colbeck, the Minister for Tourism and International Education, who will deliver the opening plenary on day two . We appreciate the Minister’s availability and willingness to talk to us about a portfolio which has rapidly become extremely important to the ELICOS sector!

In closing, I would like to extend an invitation to conference goers and sponsors, to join me for dinner and entertainment by political commentator and wit, Chris Taylor from The Chaser .

2016 NEAS MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE

We hope that the 2016 NEAS ELT Management Conference will be “Out of the Box”, providing an opportunity for fresh presenters and new ideas to be showcased in a modern and creative learning hub . Taking place at Doltone House on the shores of Sydney Harbour in the same building as Google, this year’s event will explore the many changes that have impacted on our sector since we last met .

Before I go on though, it is my distinct pleasure to thank the many sponsors who have agreed to support our industry, by generously contributing events of this nature . We are again thrilled to report that IELTS continues to be NEAS’ Premium Conference and Organisational Sponsor, continuing a valued tradition of collaboration and cooperation that goes back over a decade! ETS TOEFL will also be sponsoring our Conference Dinner, and are responsible for bringing us our After-Dinner Conference

Speaker Chris Taylor, and his sardonic wit to the stage . Finally, a first this year in the form of guard .me becoming NEAS’ key supporter of our Quality Learning Series and other professional development initiatives – so a big thank you to Keith Segel and the team for their invaluable support . Make sure you stop by our website to find out who is helping us all deliver world class ELT services!

We are delighted to share that the 2016 NEAS ELT Management Conference will feature presenters from all corners of the world . Speakers will come from near (New Zealand and Singapore) and far (United Kingdom and Malta) with professional backgrounds that represent the diversity of our ELT sector, while presentation topics will cover teaching, technology, innovation and management . It’s exciting to note the new wave of innovation and disruption that is washing through our sector, while NEAS’ traditional core values of quality and service continue to receive the support of Australian government policy-makers and regulators .

In closing I extend a warm thanks to those members and stakeholders that continue to engage in our unique Quality Assurance process, and for having the bravery and courage to submit to the views of their most important critics – their students!

Thom Jones (Brock Solutions Agency) Thursday 12 May | 0930 – 1030 South WharfIn the ever shifting sands of international education how do we get to the oasis of solid ground and certainty?

In a global market of largely similar offerings from similar providers with little but destination to divide us, how can we let the market know we’re different? Are we really? We’ll be looking at the current international market and using concrete examples of products and revenue streams that have worked despite nobody thinking they would . We’ll be breaking open some products, taking a peek inside and seeing if they do anything useful .

When we take our educational products into market, what do we actually have to sell?

Why would they want to buy?

What can we offer to ensure they buy from us?

We’ll be asking some big questions…agents or direct? Conference or contact? What language do agents speak?

We’ll look into the holy grail of Nationality mix and spreadbetting on sales budget for the ROI gamble .

We’ll talk teaching-bottom-line and raising the bar .

Basically, I’ll ask the room a lot of questions and we’ll all try and answer some of them together .

Building Inclusive ClassroomsPia Armitage (AMEP Charles Darwin University) | Friday 13 May | 1400 -1430 | Breakout 2

Increasingly teachers are aware of the growing numbers of students with learning difficulties associated with autism and dyslexia in the ESL classroom .

The challenge in the language classroom is that the learner may be undiagnosed as autistic or dyslexic and the teacher may have to find out through trial and error what problems the student has with learning through the symptoms that are presented .

Why have inclusive classrooms?

Inclusive classrooms give students with particular learning needs the support they require while they learn alongside their general education peers . Studies show that general education students also benefit from the resources available in an inclusive classroom .

What are the benefits of inclusive classrooms?

The teacher can connect with and engage with a variety of students . Students connect easily with course materials that are relevant to them . Students feel comfortable in the classroom environment to voice their ideas, thoughts and questions .

Students are more likely to experience success in the course through activities that support their learning styles, abilities and backgrounds .

How to have an inclusive classroom?

Teachers can consider the design of their content and delivery to address the unique needs that result from the learner’s disability .

Additionally, employing a variety of teaching approaches within the lesson can accommodate a wide range of learning styles and needs .

Embracing universal design principles creates accessible classes, for example:

• Presenting information both orally and visually to accommodate both students with visual or auditory impairments

• Allowing for flexibility in how students demonstrate knowledge

• Obtaining feedback from students on how they feel their learning is progressing .

BIO: Pia is an experienced innovative educator with a passion for finding and sharing creative ways to assist students who have learning difficulties in the language classroom .

Currently working as a lecturer in the Adult Migrant Education Program in Darwin, Pia acknowledges that for many students, learning can be challenging .Pia believes that it is through sharing creative ideas as educators, that learning can

become more engaging and meaningful particularly for autistic and dyslexic students .

From working and practising in the visual arts, to teaching in a variety of different contexts over a period of 18 years, Pia has been involved in building a repertoire of strategies for inclusive teaching in the second language classroom .

Chaos Into Creativity: Motivating the Terminally Not-Bothered Students and StaffThom Jones (Brock Solution Agency) | Friday 13 May | 1400-1430 | South Wharf

This is a session on tried and trusted techniques and practices for any classroom to get around the essential dichotomy of unwilling participants and the fact that everyone learns, and teaches, in different ways . We are often slung in the direction of buzzwords and fads and rarely seem to engage with the reality that most people would rather eat their own nail-clippings than go to a class…any class, at any age .

A holistic approach to getting the best from all elements of any course and ensuring that students and teachers progress and enjoy it . It will be interactive, there will be workshop elements and learning and doing…there will be NO communal singing or anybody forced to do star jumps .

There will be shouting, throwing things and probably some sweeties involved somewhere . Cards on the table, there may also be some harsh language . In context . Probably .

Main points to be covered:

• Teaching multilingual/multidisciplinary classes of varied ages

• Classroom control

• Managing expectations – students, teachers, parents, agents

• Swiss Army knife lessons – ensuring you have back up plans up your sleeve

• Limited time versus long term gain

• Poetry in the classroom?

• Lighting the spark of language learning toward the dynamite of knowledge

• A selection of communicative teaching exercises that will work at all levels

• Motivation

Compare and Contrast Validation ExperienceGail Blow (Cairns Language College), Janne Culbert and Mandy Juraev (TAFE NSW NSI) Friday 13 May | 1145-1230 | Breakout 3

This session will showcase how two contrasting ELT centres have tamed the monster of validation in their own ways with two very different stories .

The first is a private ELT centre from Cairns who have recently implemented a comprehensive validation process . They will tell of the difficulties and dangers they faced, how they have slayed them and the advice they wish someone had told them before they set out on their validation adventure .

The second is a TAFE ELT centre who has been taming the validation monster for some time . They will tell of how their approach has evolved and sharpened as they have got better at validation, the difficulties they are still yet to skewer, and the treasure and rewards they have found along the way .

BIO: Gail Blow is a music and drama teacher with over 30 years experience . With a special interest in LLN, Gail entered the VET sector in 1994 with the Cairns Business College and focused on ESL with sister school Cairns Language Centre in 1997 .

An important milestone and change of direction occurred with the introduction of the CEFR and Eurocentres programs in 2004, one of only three schools in Australia at the time to follow this direction . But the biggest thrill was winning

Japan’s Best School award - #1 in the world in 2015 .

BIO: Janne Culbert has 20 years’ experience in ELICOS teaching and management with TAFE NSW . She has been the Academic Manager for 3 different TAFE NSW ELICOS Centres and is currently the Academic Manager of the TAFE English Language Centre (TELC) at the Northern Sydney Institute . She has also managed offshore programs and headed a Quality Assurance focus group for transnational delivery at South Western Sydney Institute . Together with her team at TELC, Janne has taken on the monster of assessment validation and

found that with the right strategy, it can be tamed .

BIO: Mandy Juraev manages the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) for the Northern Sydney Institute, part of TAFE NSW . She has over 20 years’ experience in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, both in Australia and overseas . Her current role sees her supporting four TAFE NSW campuses to deliver high quality English language programs for adult migrants which tick all the compliance boxes . Mandy’s fearless leadership in the assessment validation battle by facilitating training, moderation and validation across a range of contexts

has brought some small victories, but further adventures await .

Contextual Approaches to Assuring Program Quality and Learner OutcomesMatthew Thurston (JCU Singapore) | Friday 13 May | 1015-1100 | Breakout 2

English language programs are often evaluated through the IELTS scores of exiting students . However, requiring students who are graduating from English language courses to take an IELTS or TOEFL style exam is not necessarily the best method of ensuring that students have fulfilled their learning outcomes, nor is it the best method for evaluating the quality of a program (DEEWR, 2009; M Kerstjens, C Nery 2000; Arkoudis, Baik and Richardson, 2012) .

This workshop will explore alternative approaches to quality assurance and evaluating program success, considering the effectiveness and viability of different methods of quality assurance in various contexts . Different options such as formal quality assurance and external review will be discussed, and the effectiveness of a multi-faceted approach to quality assurance will be demonstrated . This discussion will be informed by the presenter’s experience in moving the program he manages away from a reliance on IELTS style exams and towards broader quality assurance of both the program and learner outcomes .

BIO: Matt Thurston has taught on and managed English programs in China, Singapore and Australia . Currently based in Singapore, Matt manages the English language programs for James Cook University at its campuses in Singapore and Northern Queensland .

A firm believer in focussing on learner needs, Matt has led the re-development of James Cook University’s English language programs, moving away from IELTS

preparation and towards programs which enable students to develop the language skills needed for tertiary study . In the last year, these programs have been rolled out across James Cook University’s three campuses .

Creating a Collaborative Transnational Partnership: A Case StudyLinda Resnick and Kirsten Watkins (IIBT) | Thursday 12 May | 1100-1145 | Breakout 1

Australia has been at the forefront of Transnational Education (TNE) through the provision of offshore programs . However, some TNE programs have suffered full or partial failure because of poor management, insufficient infrastructural support for students, and inadequate quality assurance protocols . Much of these deficits may be due to the paradigm of framing TNE within trade and export parameters, derived primarily from a typology of business models based on the Goods and Trade Act (1994) .

This business approach appears to be based on a “home” and “host” dichotomy as exporters and importers of education services . This approach denies the meaningful, two-way communication required by both parties to develop, deliver and receive genuine inter-cultural value in educational products and services .

To remedy these problems, IIBT has developed an innovative model of collaboration that can be used within a partner relationship . This consultative approach identifies differences and synergies of culture, educational approaches and meaning equally between the partners . The IIBT initiative provides the material for a case study of Celebes Global (High) School (CGS) in Makassar, Indonesia, and IIBT . CGS is a high school offering English language-based curricula that fuse the syllabi of Indonesian and Australian high schools with the IIBT Higher Education Foundation program .

Observation and anecdotal evidence suggest that this partnership arrangement provides a model of good practice in the set-up, development, delivery and quality assurance of TNE .

This presentation also relates some of the practical risks and challenges inherent in such an approach .

BIO: Linda has worked in the ELICOS sector for 25 years with extensive experience in the management of English language direct entry pathways into tertiary study . With IIBT, Linda is responsible for English language programs leading into further study at a number of partner universities . She also has oversight of IIBT’s offshore English language programs .

BIO: Kirsten has worked in the education industry for over 20 years as an academic, consultant and now Operations Director of International Institute of Business and Technology (IIBT), a private pathway provider in WA with sister operations throughout Asia . With IIBT, Kirsten is responsible for partnerships, strategy and management of the leadership team .

Current and Future Emerging Digital Trends in the Language Travel IndustryBernice Camilleri and Lynne Farrugia (Schools and Agents) Friday 13 May | 1100 – 1145 | South Wharf

In this presentation we shall start by looking at how communication has changed over the years . This will enable us to look at and discuss statistics on mobile technology in Europe and around the world in recent years, paying particular attention to any trends and patterns that can be identified .

Digital trends in the language travel industry are ever changing, and after seeing where they are coming from we shall also try to identify the direction in which they are headed . How will this change the behaviour of potential customers, and in turn, how will this affect the way schools market themselves? How can schools shift their business plans to meet the needs of customers in this digital world? These are all questions that we shall discuss together with our audience based mainly on the challenges and experiences that they face .

BIOS: Bernice Camilleri and Lynne Farrugia are the owners of the online marketing platform www .schoolsandagents .com, which is known for the dissemination of news from the language travel industry, and for the guidance and assistance that it offers to its member organisations in promoting themselves and identifying their business strategy . Bernice Camilleri has been involved in this sector for over 14 years, throughout which she has had various roles ranging from the academic and organisational aspect of running a language school, to online marketing on an international level in more recent years . Lynne Farrugia also has a similar background whereby she started off on the academic side of the industry over a decade ago, and eventually chose to specialise in marketing and moved in this direction within the industry .

Data Trends of Where European Agents Are Sending, Why Students Are Studying and How Long They Are StayingNicola Lutz (StudyTravel) | Friday 13 May | 1145 – 1230 | Breakout 1

StudyTravel has 25 years of knowledge of the international education industry, specialising in the agent-educator partnership, and not in just one medium, but in print, in person and online .

English Australia UpdateBrett Blacker (English Australia) | Thursday 12 May | 1230 – 1315 | South Wharf

ELICOS Sector Performance and Policy Landscape

2015 set the new watermark for the ELICOS sector as international education enrolments in Australia reached a new peak, surpassing the previous 2009 record . The headline data indicates more students sitting in ELICOS classrooms than ever before, but was that the case for all providers?

Student visas are the backbone of the ELICOS sector, however do not provide the complete picture of student enrolments . Historically up to one-third of all students undertaking ELICOS in Australia have been on a Tourist or Working Holiday visa . Has that trend continued?

The sector is undergoing significant change across legislative instruments and immigration frameworks that affect all education institutions . How are these changes impacting on English language providers?

The rising tide of enrolments is positive but is not raising all ships . This presentation will draw on the most up-to-date data on ELICOS student enrolments and the impact of recent lobbying efforts to support the English language training sector during this critical period .

BIO: Brett Blacker is the Chief Executive Officer of English Australia, the national peak body for the English language sector of international education in Australia .

Brett has held a range of senior roles in international education including Director, International, Residential Services, Alumni, Careers and Employment Office, Murdoch University and Director, International Office, University of Newcastle . He gained experience in the commercial sector as National Business Development

Manager and subsequently General Manager: Health, OSHC Worldcare, Mondial Assistance (Allianz) working with cross sector institutions nationally .

Brett completed his Bachelor in Management and Marketing at the University of Newcastle . He focused his professional career in international education whilst completing his Masters in Leadership and Management in Education at Newcastle and commencing a marketing role with the university’s International Development Office, during and post studies .

He has served on the Board of Perth Education City (PEC) and as part of the executive group of Australian Universities International Directors Forum (AUIDF), and is the immediate Past President and long-standing Board member of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) .

Educators or Entertainers?Jesicka Gessner and Andrea Ezrova (Explore English) | Friday 13 May | 1100 – 1145 | Breakout 3

A question so absurd to ask but yet once we think about it, how much entertainment is needed or wanted in our industry? What aspects of a teacher’s personality make the learning more attractive for our students? Or maybe it is more accurate to ask: What do our students want from us?

Many private businesses operating within the ELICOS sector rely heavily on the reputation of their schools, and primarily on the teaching character of those who are employed . This presentation challenges the way “capable” teachers are perceived and chosen .

Is it really a teaching degree that produces wonderful teachers, or is it the life experience and background knowledge gained through it that counts? Why would we have to focus on “teacher” teachers when this world has so much more to offer? Widening our target group when recruiting suitable teachers could result in creating a learning atmosphere which is much more entertaining and enriching .

Some might say that those who study a teaching degree achieve better success in the ELICOS industry than those who do not . One could even argue that teaching degrees offer only hypothetical and limited knowledge of the learning environment . Therefore, those who focus solely on this first degree are not really exposed to the theatrics and creativity that the ELICOS sector hopes to attract .

So, the question remains - Why are more and more very successful and high-quality schools employing more teachers that have a non-teaching first degree? To some, they might even say these teachers are not qualified . This presentation will demonstrate that these non-eligible individuals actually create a whole new concept of teaching, which results in great satisfaction of the clients . They make the path to our goal more entertaining . Hence our initial question: Do we need to take a step back and reconsider the label of what the ideal ELICOS teacher should be?

BIO: Jesicka Gessner holds a Bachelor of Arts majoring in linguistics from Latrobe University and a Cert IV in TESOL . Her love of language is evidenced by her ability to speak and use four languages which include German, French, Polish and English . Jesicka has a passion for languages, which is why she chose the career path she did and over the years has developed her own infectious teaching style . Her technique to motivate and engage students leverages both conventional methods of classroom teaching, blended with a fresh energetic

approach of entertainment . Her style creates an engaging and safe environment for her learners, thus encouraging them to interact and be more disciplined with their own learning . Therefore, Jesicka feels her presentation will open the minds of academic leaders in regards to the current perceptions of what a true ELICOS teacher should be .

has been a teacher for nine years and speaks three languages . She is constantly learning from her working environment and her colleagues and has opted to do this presentation at the conference to voice her personal view on the current perception of teachers in the ELICOS sector .

English Communication Skills and EmployabilityCath Moore (ETS TOEFL) | Thursday 12 May | 1400 -1430 | South Wharf

I want to be the person who is the “right fit” for the company, team and position in a competitive global marketplace . How can you help me?

In today’s competitive global market, English communication skills are becoming as important as technical skills – and having an English-proficient workforce is a business imperative for international success . For many international students learning English is an important step towards a long term goal of becoming employable in the global marketplace .

According to the Graduate Outlook Survey 2014, Australian employers rated communication skills (written and oral) as the number one soft skill they are looking for in their future employees .

Achieving a certain score on an English language proficiency test is part of the process for an English language learner becoming employable in an English speaking workplace . However, a longer term strategy to develop English communication skills is clearly an imperative .

In this session you will learn:

• The English language skills employers require and why this knowledge is important for your centre

• How you, the ELT centre manager and your teachers, can create value for your learners by embedding employability communication skills in your courses

BIO: Cath Moore has over 25 years’ experience in managing and teaching across the sector in tertiary, high school, VET and private ELT centres . In her role as an English language consultant for ETS TOEFL Cath delivers free professional development on the TOEFL® test .

Entitlements for International Students and the Fair Work OmbudsmanLouise Peters (Fair Work Australia) | Thursday 12 May | 1100 – 1145 | South Wharf

International students can be vulnerable in the workplace for a number of reasons including age, limited work experience (in any country) and English-language proficiency . They can also be more accepting of exploitative work arrangements due to limited understanding of workplace laws, fear of reprisal for speaking out and a lack of confidence in their ability to find alternative work .

One of the keys to improving the employment experiences of international students is equipping them with a basic knowledge of Australian workplace laws, providing information about where they can seek information and assistance, and giving them the confidence to report issues without fear .

This presentation will cover workplace entitlements for international students and common areas of non-compliance by employers of international students . It will then explore how the Fair Work Ombudsman and international student stakeholders can work together to educate international students about their workplace rights and improve their employment experiences in Australia .

BIO: The Fair Work Ombudsman is an independent statutory office responsible for ensuring compliance with Australia’s workplace laws and promoting harmonious, productive and cooperative workplace relations . The agency works with employees, employers and the community to educate and encourage compliance with Australia’s workplace laws . The Fair Work Ombudsman’s services, including an Infoline and web-based tools and resources, are free to all employers and employees .

Louise Peters is the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Director of Education Resources . Her team is responsible for developing educational tools and resources to help employers and employees understand workplace laws, and for delivering the Fair Work Ombudsman’s community engagement program .

Growing Global but Staying LocalDenise Metzger and Rico Karstensen (EF) | Thursday 12 May | 1145 – 1230 | South Wharf

The question of how to meet global needs in a localised, personal way is one that all schools address at various levels, and intrapreneurship is often floated as a possible solution without significant examination . This is true for schools existing within an international organisation, and independent schools aiming for global relevance . Our approach to engaging with this topic is to further subdivide the question into:

• How do we make, and justify, local decisions within a global organisation?

• How do we provide a unique cultural experience as a local school while aligned to the global brand?

• How do we grow the capacity of our staff to think both locally and globally?

• How do we fight the urge towards maintaining the status quo and stay innovative instead?

There is a natural tendency for people to think within their immediate sphere, and possibly to feel confined by perceived limitations of their role, so how do we break through that perception to develop capacity and motivate staff towards innovative thinking within the global framework? This presentation will explore these questions and offer some examples of how EF Sydney has attempted to address them with the aim of starting a conversation among participants, and sharing best practices .

BIO: Denise Metzger became Director of Studies at EF Education First, Sydney after a decade of teaching ESL in various countries, working as an examiner, teacher trainer, Senior Teacher and several years of media marketing and research thrown in somewhere in the middle of her ESL career . She holds an MA Educational Leadership and a DELTA, and is interested in continuing her education through a PhD in the areas of educational equity and global leadership skills . She believes that positive psychology and empowerment are

the keys to creating a high-performing, collaborative and, best of all, fun, place to work and to study .

BIO: After years working for EF Education First in Denmark heading up the sales and marketing department for Language Travel, Rico Karstensen took on the position of School Director for the EF Sydney language school in 2014 . His background within business administration and finance have allowed him to be part of several turnarounds within different industries . He has a strong belief that company culture in an organization is the one thing that makes the difference between mediocrity and success .

IELTS Test Preparation Course in ELICOS: Challenges for Academic Managers and TeachersPhil Chappell (Macquarie University) and Clare McDowell (Australian Research and Testing Services) Friday 13 May | 1315 – 1400 | South Wharf

In this presentation I will present key findings from a research study that explored the knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and actual classroom practices that ELICOS teachers have about the IELTS test and teaching test preparation classes . Findings from the study present several key challenges as well as opportunities for improving test preparation practices . There are several key gaps in teachers’ understandings about standardised tests, and classroom practice varies widely . There is clearly anything but a standardised approach to IELTS preparation in ELICOS, which is cause for concern in terms of the impact the test has on English language courses, as well as the impact teacher cognition has on preparing students for taking the test . Implications for future professional development are presented, pointing to opportunities for positive change . Implications for future research in the area of language teacher cognition in ELICOS will also be discussed .

BIO: Philip Chappell is a lecturer in linguistics at Macquarie University . He convenes the Graduate Certificate of TESOL, conducts research in a variety of areas of ELT and TESOL, and supervises research students at Masters and PhD levels . His current research program is focused on teacher and student experiences in the Australian ELICOS sector . Phil has taught and managed overseas and in Australia in a variety of language and literacy programs .

BIO: Clare McDowell’s career spans over 30 years of ELT practice, from classroom teaching to language testing, test design, IELTS examiner training and hands-on test management . In her role as Local Secretary for 23 years she oversaw the delivery of the University of Cambridge English Exams in Australia . She has successfully co-authored a wide range of course books for the IELTS classroom and self-study . These books enjoy world-wide recognition .

MQ’s Book Club CaféJose Lara and Lesley Speer (MQELC) | Friday 13 May | 1315 – 1400 | Breakout 2

Considerable research indicates that extensive reading is a powerful tool . However, many students are weak or reluctant readers, who may lack the motivation to read and the skills to select appropriate, engaging reading material . At MQELC, we are exploring practical ways to improve learners’ vocabulary through free extensive reading and by using a variety of online resources which can be brought into the classroom in a number of creative ways . Book Club Café was established as a starting point whereby students come to enjoy reading in a relaxed and supportive environment . Utilising several online tools, we have developed a sustainable system which can be adapted to suit the needs of students at all levels and from all backgrounds .

Reading texts are accessed online from home, and teachers can easily track the number of words and texts which students have read, while also recording the time students spend reading . Students identify their reading level online and develop greater autonomy when making an informed selection of reading material . Teachers use this input to develop a range of creative classroom activities, including peer teaching and role play, during our Book Club Café sessions .

BIOS: Jose Lara and Lesley Speer teach at MQELC and they have collaborated on various projects, including the development of language courses for the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University .

Jose has a Master of Applied Linguistics (TESOL) and a Master in Translation and Interpreting, while Lesley has an MA, Dip Ed and Graduate Diploma in TESOL . Jose and Lesley have presented at a number of conferences, including IATEFL, UECA and CamTESOL . They won the TOEFL Award for Innovation and Pearson Award for Professional Practice at the English Australia Conference in 2015 for their Book Club Café project .

Numeracy Through Applied Delivery and Assessment Jennifer Williamson and Iryna Dwyer (TasTAFE) | Friday 13 May | 1100 – 1145 | Breakout 2

This session analyses the major tensions in teaching numeracy within ESL/EAL and presents some contemporary practical ideas on how numeracy can be taught and assessed through applied, project-based means .

Numeracy is recognised as an essential life skill and is incorporated in various Foundation and ESL/EAL curricula, including the Certificate I in Spoken and Written English (CSWE I) curriculum, used within the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) . Despite this widespread acceptance of the value of numeracy, a number of barriers remain that impact on its delivery . Language teachers often feel unprepared as they do not have specific training in its teaching and are unclear about the terminology and how to effectively embed the teaching of numeracy into a context that is relevant to students .

This session will discuss the delivery of numeracy modules within various AMEP courses at TasTAFE and provide recommendations on how to address students’ learning needs in creative, applied ways . In addition to this, the session will also analyse some examples of assessment conducted and will invite participants to reflect on how these could be contextualised to suit different cohorts of learners .

BIO: Jennifer Williamson began her career in TESOL in 1996 and taught in a number of settings and contexts in Asia and South America . In 2008 she returned to Australia to complete her MEd in TESOL and became involved in the AMEP in Launceston, where she developed an interest in using applied and project-based learning to foster the skills development of students with low levels of prior education . In 2015 Jennifer became the state representative on the AMEP Task Bank Working Group, a role which involves developing and

validating numeracy related tasks .

BIO: Ryna Dwyer has been in the teaching profession for over 20 years and has a BA in history and sociology, a Graduate Certificate in Education and MEd in TESOL . Since 2012 she has been teaching English on the AMEP in Launceston . For her student cohort aged 18 to 25 in the Young English Migrant Program, Ryna has developed a special program with consideration to the students’ interest in studying math and science . As an Advanced Skills Teacher, Ryna enjoys supporting the creative process of tailoring learning programs to the needs of particular student cohorts and sharing her experience with

colleagues .

Online Teacher Professional Development Resources for Institutions Dave Fox (Lexis TESOL Training Centre / Cambridge) | Thursday 12 May | 1315 – 1400 | South Wharf

While schools and managers want teachers who are continually developing and improving their skills, there is quite often a difference between what an organisation can provide for its teachers and what the teachers need individually, often leading to a lack of buy-in from all parties involved . The problems encountered when running face to face professional development make it less attractive to organisations and so in order to maximise participation and increase effectiveness, managers need to think outside the box and alternative delivery options must be considered .

This session looks at the utilisation of institutional membership of Cambridge English Teacher as a means to facilitate personal and targeted professional development to teachers . Through the vast array of resources and access to knowledge leaders available through Cambridge English, institutional membership provides organisations with the tools needed to develop teachers while still maintaining control over the program .

The session will show managers how tweaking the way in which they approach professional development can result in change in perspective from teachers and provide a structured, more effective professional development program that helps challenge and develop teachers at all stages of skill and development .

BIO: Dave Fox has worked in the TEFL/ELICOS industry for the last 15 years . During this time he has worked in Europe, the UK and Australia as a teacher, teacher trainer, director of studies and principal . He is currently the Training Manager of Lexis TESOL Training Centres (LTTC) and the Academic Manager of Lexis English Sunshine Coast .

Out of the Box Conversations: “Let’s Continue to Talk”Karen Barber (ACTA) | Friday 13 May | 1400 -1430 | Breakout 1

One missing element in the current ESOL sector is a national community of practice, providing a network for the sharing of knowledge through continuous, relevant and collaborative discussion . The AMEP Evaluation 2015 recognises this and recommends the establishment of such a network (Recommendation 8) .

How can the national TESOL body contribute to this? Great ideas, innovation and learning often originate from conversations . Now ACTA (Australian Council of TESOL Associations) would like to promote on-going conversation with ESOL teachers, students and policy makers alike in all the states and territories . By sharing knowledge, experience and ideas through “thoughtful” conversations we aim to enhance teaching and learning in the ESOL sector and create better understandings between all participants .

Could this be a step towards a community of practice that teachers and policy makers are looking for? In this presentation, ACTA will outline some ideas on how this may be achieved, and invite others to join the conversation .

BIO: Karen Slikas Barber is the vice president of the Australian Council of TESOL (ACTA) and is a teacher in the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) at Central Institute of Technology in Perth . Her areas of expertise include developing specialist ESOL courses, classroom research and linguistic mindfulness . While she has managed and taught at language schools in China and worked in marketing, public education and public works engineering, she most loves teaching in the AMEP with its exciting challenges, complications and

delight . She has a Master of Education in TESOL and a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering . Most recently she has written the Carly and Kumar reader series . karen@readmeagainpress .com .au

Risk Makers Turn Risk Taking Into Risk TamersRussell Welch (John Paul International College) | Thursday 12 May | 1230 -1315 | Breakout 1

Each decade, each year, each day, we find ourselves poised on the brink of another new world of “information and communication”, the world at large; the world of our students .

Although the benefits of change may be hard to predict, successful changes begin with the recognition that an organisation’s potential may be far different from what its current appearance indicates and the “intrapreneur” in any organisation is key to this process .

Risk often has a negative connotation in the entrepreneurial situation, but in the intrapreneurial situation, risk management is integral to success and growth .

Risk making, identifying a challenge or opportunity, and facing it with courage, is the hallmark of an intrapreneur .

BIO: Russell Welch is well recognised as a leader in the field of international education and has represented the industry at State, National and International levels .

As Founding Director of John Paul International College (1997), Russell was responsible for its development and significant growth in the competitive private education and training environment .

As a working Director of a college that currently operates across the VTE, School, Pathways and ELICOS sectors, Russell has a strong understanding of the education landscape .

Russell has great insight into the current demands facing businesses in the education and training environment .

Ceding control of a learning space to students is a daunting prospect for many teachers . Moving to virtual learning spaces is also still widely viewed with trepidation . This presentation seeks to allay fears in both of these areas and encourage teachers to loosen their grip on the reins and allow students to actively participate in their own learning using closed Facebook groups . It also outlines some key class management benefits of this technology for teachers . The presentation will first, briefly, outline the rationale for Facebook use in the light of modern day learners and their existing behaviour patterns . The focus will then shift to real examples of interaction from closed Facebook groups and demonstrate the significant positive effects this virtual learning space has on student autonomy and control of the learning process by highlighting instances of students sharing ideas, resources and information . The presentation will then cover some key benefits to teachers including communication and tracking . The main aim of the presentation is to share positive experiences with Facebook and thereby encourage teachers to overcome any lingering inhibitions concerning control and technology and to embrace the benefits Facebook groups hold for their learners and themselves .

BIO: Ashley has 20 years of ESL teaching experience covering general courses as well as a range of specific purposes including academic, business and exam-preparation courses . For the past eight years, Ashley has taught ELICOS courses at La Trobe Melbourne, where he has acted as academic coordinator, contributed to materials development and offered professional development sessions both internally and at Victoria branch EA events . Ashley’s main areas of interest include peer assisted learning, learner autonomy and mobile learning .

Supporting and Managing Staff Through Online WikisAnna Bicknell and Cammie Ochoa (ELSIS) | Friday 13 May | 1315 -1400 | Breakout 3

Connecting with teachers and staff in an efficient and effective way is a challenging task for academic managers . At ELSIS Melbourne, management utilise an online wiki to provide updates, important announcements, course curriculum, assessment details, and policies and procedures to teachers and support staff . This enables management to capture all staff and provides a central place for everyone to locate information . Many of the teaching staff are part-time or casual and need to plan from home . Using a wiki allows staff to do this and reduces the confusion that can occur due to multiple emails or remote computer login access . In addition, should a teacher need to cover a class with short notice, the wiki allows them to easily see what material needs to be covered . Sustainable Professional DevelopmentMaggie Swannock and Donna Cook (ACU) | Friday 13 May | 1015 -1100 | Breakout 3

A Sustainable Model for Continuous Professional Development: Reflections from a Chinese High School .

This session presents a model of CPD designed to equip experienced teachers with the skills to rise to the challenge of changing educational demands, particularly in the high school context . This model provides contextual strategies for sustainable change through input-sessions, classroom practice, mentoring and reflection . We will demonstrate how this model can be adapted to any context to enrich CPD for both experienced and novice teachers .

We will draw on our experience of delivering a practical CPD program in a Chinese high school . It will show how context informed workshops; classroom observation, mentoring, demonstration, joint reflection and ongoing feedback can result in sustainable change . This session will begin by describing the CPD model used for the course design; it will briefly outline the context and the key challenges that were faced including the changing educational landscape, large class sizes, unmotivated students and disillusioned teachers .

The model is particularly relevant for delivering CPD offshore, but could be easily adapted to the Australian ELICOS environment .

Teacher as ArtistPatrick Pheasant (University of Sydney CET) | Thursday 12 May | 1400 -1430 | Breakout 2

In an ever-changing economic, social, political, technical and educational environment, how can we as teachers, educators, managers and artists hope to create transformative learning experiences for international students at universities in Australia? Exploring the intersections of all four pillars of the 2016 NEAS ELT Management Conference of thought leadership, pedagogic disruption, collaboration jam and intrapreneurship in ELT, this interactive presentation encourages ELT managers to reconnect with the core inspirations of their work as leaders, teachers and artists in universities, colleges and schools in Australia . Patrick Pheasant shares his insight from his recent doctoral research in using drama and role-play in TESOL to create transformative experiences for adult students of English and how this study has influenced his approaches to management, teaching and service roles in the ELT industry .

BIO: Patrick Pheasant, Director at the University of Sydney Centre for English Teaching, brings enthusiasm and a healthy pragmatism to his roles as teacher, educator, manager and artist . With 23 years’ experience in applying drama, TESOL and teacher training methodologies across ELICOS, high school, vocational education, higher education and corporate sectors in Japan, the Netherlands, the United States and Australia, Patrick’s approach to leadership, disruption, collaboration and intrapreneurship is informed by a dynamic systems

perspective with a global outlook and a whole bunch of opportunism! His recent doctoral research at the University of Sydney is in using process drama in TESOL . Patrick is the current Vice-President of the University English Centres of Australia (UECA) and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors . He has been recently appointed as Convenor of the NEAS Advisory Board .

The English Language Sector in New Zealand: Growth and the Relationship With GovernmentEwen Mackenzie-Bowie (English New Zealand) | Thursday 12 May | 1145 – 1230 | Breakout 1

The aim of this presentation is to report on the current state of ELICOS in New Zealand and identify the factors which in 2015 have produced a second year of solid growth among English NZ members, with numbers from Latin America up by over 50%, and steady incremental growth from the North Asian markets that provide half our business . I will look at global economic factors as well as government agency performance and discuss how they have affected our businesses both positively and negatively .

Recent changes in immigration policy settings to allow pathway visas will provide further opportunities for growth, but will also expose the market place to higher risk . The presentation will analyse some of that risk and highlight the danger of the NZ Government’s international education policy being too heavily dependent on migration and employment outcomes .

English New Zealand incorporates private and state sector ELICOS providers and represents 85% of the market share in the country .

BIO: Ewen Mackenzie-Bowie is the Chairman of English New Zealand, the peak body for the NZ English language sector, and owner-director of two member schools: Auckland English Academy and New Horizon College . Ewen taught English in Egypt, Scotland and Spain before running language schools in England and, since 2001, in New Zealand .

AEA and New Horizon are part of ICL Education Group, of which Ewen is Chairman . The Group includes a business school and aggregates over 1000 EFTS (equivalent full-time students) . Ewen is an experienced marketer and has also published several children’s literature papers and texts . He has an MA from the University of Surrey, a BA (Hons) from the University of Stirling, a DELTA from the University of Edinburgh and an IH CELTA .

The English Language Teaching Sector in Malta Genevieve Abela (FELTOM) | Thursday 12 May | 1230 – 1315 | Breakout 2

The ELT industry in Malta is a unique animal; a cottage industry tracing its roots back to the late 1960’s, it has evolved, developed, and grown into a key player in the international ELT scene .

Initially a summer destination offering short stay summer camps to young learners choosing the safety of a small island and home stay options, Malta now attracts over 75,000 learners a year, all year round, from all walks of life .

A leading example on how creativity and flexibility supports a successful business model and how public-private partnerships can work to achieve quality and positive results, Malta brings together all stakeholders in the industry with a common goal of attracting new clients by offering a quality product .

Where is Malta? What is Malta offering? Why should I even care?

Who knows but you might want to find out…

BIO: Genevieve Abela joined FELTOM (Federation of English Language Organisations in Malta) in 2012 as the federation’s first Chief Executive Officer, further bolstering the organisation’s setup .

Responsible for accreditation and quality assurance, lobbying, marketing and representation for quality providers of English language teaching services in Malta, FELTOM works closely with government authorities and industry

stakeholders, to champion Malta as a centre of excellence in English language teaching .

Occupying the post of Private Secretary to the Minister of Tourism within the Ministry for Tourism, Culture & the Environment, for the previous four years, Genevieve was able to apply her training in education within the tourism context specifically by overseeing the EFL industry .

Genevieve’s experience and expertise lends itself to the myriad skills required in high pressured, fast paced environments that focus on network building and quality branding .

She currently sits on the ELT Council under the Ministry of Education and several other inter-ministerial boards responsible for the tourism business sector . Genevieve also represents the industry on the Malta Tourism Authority Board, the Malta Employers Association Council, as well as being Chairperson of the MTA Committee for Niche Sectors and the Malta Chamber of Commerce Committee for the Tourism Business Sector .

The F*@! FactorDr Susan Delahunty (Explore English) | Thursday 12 May | 1100 – 1145 | Breakout 3

Swear words, love them or hate them, are an essential part of any language . I was once told that to master fluency in a language, one must also master the swear words that are part of it . There are many prissy people out there who might suggest swearing is a sign of poor vocabulary . Is this utter nonsense? The people that I know who do swear tend to have a much wider vocabulary than those prissy people making these statements . So is swearing a good or bad thing and should taboo words be introduced in the ESL classroom . An interesting thought but unfortunately, this sensitive topic usually has “the jury out deliberating” on more occasions than not! All that being said, why do those brave ESL teachers venture into the controversial world of language learning and use swear words in the classroom . More importantly, is there any point? I will put it to the audience that this is a topic that needs addressing if ELICOS Centres want to stay in the 21st century . Shouldn’t we acknowledge that young students who walk through our doors have a genuine interest in this area of our language? This presentation will put the audience on the spot in terms of addressing taboo words and explores how our own psyche determines what we believe is right and wrong .

BIO: Dr Susan Delahunty has been responsible for setting up Explore English, a funky, boutique style ELICOS centre in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD . As the Director of the language centre, she oversees academic output and is also responsible for implementing strategic direction to help strengthen the centre’s position in the marketplace . Prior to this project, Susan gained valuable managerial experience working at a number of institutions such as Bendigo Kangan Institute and Cambridge International College . In fact, she has over

20 years’ experience in the training and development industry and is a member of the Teachers Registration Board of WA (TRBWA) and the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) . Her overseas experience has been in the Middle East (Dubai), Malaysia and Japan . Susan has always had an interest in the experiences of students who cross international borders and as a result, her PhD research focused on international education . In particular, Susan illustrated the stories of Middle Eastern Gulf women studying at Australian universities . Susan also holds two Master degrees (Applied Linguistics – TESOL ) and Education (Special Needs) .

Transforming Tests Nick Michelioudakis (Express Publishing) | Friday 13 May | 1230 – 1315 | South Wharf

“Death by m/c Qs” seems to be the punishment God gave teachers in the wake of Adam and Eve’s transgression . Yet it does not have to be like that . Although most of us have to use exam materials in class for reasons of face validity, we can in fact “tweak” them so that students actually find them interesting . The aim of this workshop is to demonstrate four easy-to-use techniques which can both motivate learners and help them do better in exams . Requiring only minimal preparation, all of them can be used in class tomorrow .

BIO: Nick Michelioudakis, B . Econ, Dip RSA, MSc (TEFL), has been active in ELT for many years as a teacher, examiner, presenter and teacher trainer . He has travelled widely and presented in many countries . He has written extensively on methodology, though he is better known for his “Psychology and ELT” articles which have appeared in numerous newsletters and magazines . He is particularly interested in student motivation as well as social and evolutionary psychology . He often shares comedy clips for students on his YouTube channel, “Comedy for ELT” . For articles or worksheets of his, you can visit his blog at www .michelioudakis .org .

UECA – CamTESOL Research Symposium MentorshipDarren Brookes (UECA) | Friday 13 May | 1145 – 1230 | South Wharf

Managing and connecting digitally: Engaging ASEAN researchers and their Australian mentors with online spaces and social media

The Cambodia TESOL conference series, held in Phnom Penh each February, has grown from 150 delegates in 2004 to 1700 delegates in 2016 . CamTESOL is now one of the largest annual ELT conferences in the Asia-Pacific and is attended by many market leaders and other stakeholders in our region . This conference is also supported by the United States and Australian governments with the aim of helping Cambodia to develop its English language teaching capacity . In addition to the main two-day conference program, there are also a NEAS sponsored leadership and quality forum, local site visits and a full day research symposium . As part of the full day research program, a research grant awards program was instigated . This program enables local ASEAN researchers to present topical ELT research papers and submit papers for review to the prestigious Language Education in Asia (LEiA) journal .

In this session, the research grants mentoring program project coordinator will present on the various online strategies and social media used to manage and engage a diverse cohort of researchers and mentors across Southeast Asia and Australia . Local mentors are selected from University English Centres Australia (UECA) member centres to work one on one with research grant recipients . The goal of this mentoring is to ensure that papers are of a suitable standard, not only for presentation but also for consideration for publication in the LEiA journal . The coordinator will highlight the history of the project over three years and show how project management methodologies have been used to varying degrees . The coordinator will also demonstrate how online and face to face communities of practice (CoP) have been used to engage researchers from high context cultures and to also help the Australian mentors to connect and share strategies .

BIO: Darren Brookes has been the University English Centres Australia (UECA) project coordinator for the Cambodia TESOL ASEAN Regional Research Grant Recipient Mentoring program since 2013 . In the last two iterations of the project, Darren has coordinated a team of local mentors, selected from UECA member centres, to work one on one with research grant recipients from several ASEAN member countries . Darren holds a Master’s degree in applied linguistics from the University of Queensland and has worked across

the ELICOS, EFL and higher education sectors for nearly 20 years . His special interests include eLearning, mLearning, blended learning, project management and the professional development of educators . As coordinator for the research grant mentoring project, Darren has investigated ways in which to effect and manage online communities of practice for both mentors and researchers using online spaces and various social media . Darren is currently directing his own eLearning consultancy in Melbourne . His clients include NEAS, UECA and English Australia member colleges and universities .

Understanding and Engaging With Computer-Based Testing Scoring EnginesLouise FitzGerald (Pearson) | Thursday 12 May | 1145 -1230 | Breakout 3

Computer based testing is becoming more common, with more and more candidates opting for the keyboard rather than the pen or pencil for their visa application or university entrance English test . However, teachers, used to preparing their students for paper-based tests, are not always confident that they are giving their students what is needed for them to perform at their best in this new format . This session will provide insights into areas where teachers can help their students maximise their scores in all four skills by understanding how automated scoring engines work . Examples from the Pearson Test of English Academic will be incorporated into the session .

BIO: Louise FitzGerald has been an ELT professional for more than 30 years . She has taught, trained teachers and managed ELT programs in Australia, Egypt, China and Cambodia . She currently teaches English to pre-sessional students and trains on the Language Teacher Education Program at the University of New South Wales Institute of Languages . As well as proficiency and achievement test development, she is involved in item writing for a range of high-stakes tests and has written items for an international computer

based test .

“Making valid tests is a waste of time"

Making valid tests is a waste of time if an externaltest can meet your needs in a cost effective way.Developing and maintaining good internal testsof your own is a challenge requiring appropriatecontent, statistical soundness, and anchoring tothe standard you have in mind. The challenge isamplified by a need for parallel forms, security, and new content as existing forms become known- particularly for Listening & Reading tests.

We invite you to take advantage of the researchand development behind the TOEIC® and TOEFL® Institutional Testing Program while using your own resources to move beyond what a standardised test assesses.

Quality is a commitment. ETS specialises in test design, with many parallel forms, and a score anchored to international standards of competency. A TOEFL result provides objective evidence for external bodies and adds a recognised score (TOEFL PBT®) that students canrefer to alongside their other results. In contrast, your teachers' ability to qualitatively assess students can enhance and broaden your assessment, and the quantitative and qualitativeresults can be constructively compared as a meansof improving overall standards.

"Quality is a commitment"Integrate the TOEIC® or TOEFL ITP® with your ownteaching and assessment expertise, to achieve the best overall assessment.
