Dear Parents, Students and Friends

Prep Big Day Out

Monty South was certainly full of life, early last Monday morning as 99

Prep children made their way to school, still in their PJ’s! The day

started with breakfast, then after a quick change into our uniforms, it

was onto the buses and off to the Planetarium. The excitement was

palpable and one child told me that it was the first time they had ever

dreamed about school! Another told me when I had asked what was

the best part of the day? –“everything”.

Thank you to the Foundation staff, Amanda McDonald, Emma Hooper,

Tegan Caldwell, Amy Duckworth, Keera Glass, Ingrid Addison –Harris

and Kate Little for organising the day so well and making sure a good

time was held by all.

Also a special mention to our Parent Helpers who assisted us

throughout the day -Jane Plunkett, Jodie Hogan, Shane Egan, Narelle

Brilliant and Jenny Rose.

Attitudes to School 2015 Data

The overall objective of the Attitudes to School Survey is to collect data

about the opinions of students from Year 5 to Year 12 and for

individual schools across Victoria to use this information to drive

improvement. The Attitudes to School survey assists schools to gain an

understanding of students’ perceptions and their experience of school.

The survey provides schools with valuable data on students’ views of

their wellbeing, school in general, and teaching and learning.

This survey was conducted with all Year 5 and Year 6 students at our

school in late April this year. It is pleasing to note that the 2015 Student

Attitudes to School survey data has maintained and built upon the

exceptional data from previous years since 2010 and shown a further

positive increase yet again to reflect that our students at Montmorency

South Primary School are highly motivated and have a strong sense of

belonging and connectedness to our school. Both our Year 5 and Year 6

student data in all areas has continued to exceed Region and State mean

scores.

This 2015 Student Data reinforces that as a school we continue to

maintain a learning environment that gives many opportunities to

experience success. It is also most encouraging to note that our

students feel safe and secure and very connected to their school.

Student leadership opportunities and developing students’ resilience

has continued to be a priority with many taking the opportunities

offered to demonstrate their ability to be role models and leaders for

other students. Many other qualities have continued to emerge that

have been most pleasing to observe including, empathy, consideration

for others and compassion on a local and global perspective.

Our school culture is influenced by a common purpose where we need

to continue to acknowledge and pursue high performance (excellence)

through setting high expectations whilst embedding a social framework

to support students on their learning journey.

School Council The School Council met on Tuesday evening. Business items discussed

included:

Transfer of our 2014 surplus funds from Department of

Education and Training to our account. (Finally!)

Approval for Banyule Walk to School Day in October.

Approval of the Mobile Phone policy.

Compass program and its progress. Will offer a Parent

Information Session on Compass to parents in Term 4.

Parking Issues

Parents and Friends fundraising activities

Plans for 2016 school year.

Beveridge Primary School Visit We had 10 staff from Beveridge Primary School visit us today. They

wanted to see our literacy session in progress, our data wall and our

resources. One of the foci was our use of the Learning Intentions and

Success Criteria.

The Beveridge Primary School staff were impressed and very thankful

for our staff for opening up their doors. Our thanks to Jane Plunkett

who took the staff around the school and assisted us in the process.

BRIDGES The Bridges program for the Prep children of

2016 is well underway and we have enjoyed

meeting the children and their families. They

are certainly a very enthusiastic group and

ready to know all they can about their new

school! As well as visiting classrooms,

teachers and special places in the school

grounds, we also read, play games and make

things! We made a little owl puppet last

week, an "owlet" if you will, to signify the

children's beginning at Monty South. As you

can see, they were very proud of their

achievement. We wish to show our appreciation to the teachers and children who are so friendly and

welcoming when we visit you. If we haven't seen you yet, we soon will!

Many Thanks,

Lori O'Neill, Bev Jackson & Clare Bear

YEAR 2 Classroom Clippings In Grade 2 we are really enjoying learning about the solar system. Many students have been borrowing books relating to space to expand their understanding. In class Ian was enjoying the book ‘The Magic School Bus – Lost in the Solar System’ and became inquisitive about what sun spots are made of. Totally terrific Tracey posed this question to the class and here are some predictions they made up as to what the answer could be. I think they are little fiery balls of hot gas – Ava. I think sun spots are made of oil and hot air and bits of coal- James

A place in the sun that there’s no atmosphere- Oliver

I think a sun spot is where the sun gases haven’t spread – Harry

I think sun spots are made out of fire – Alex

I believe sun spots are burning out parts of the sun – Ashwin

The grade then researched the answer. If you see somebody from 2C ask them!

YEAR 4 Classroom Clippings

On Monday 10th Aug, the Year 4s and 2s went into an inflatable planetarium. The Cosmodome was set up in the gym and could fit one class in at a time. It was dark inside the dome and we were able to lie down on the floor and watch the ceiling. We watched a movie called Oasis in Space where we learnt about the eight planets in our solar system and whether they could support life. We also learnt about Pluto, the dwarf planet, and about galaxies and the atmosphere on planets. Nick, from Journeyman Education, explained what we can see in the sky at night and how we get day and night and the seasons. At the end we were able to ask questions. It was amazing to learn about the size of each planet and the sun. We also saw the constellations made by the stars at night. It was a lot of fun and really interesting to learn inside the Cosmodome. YEAR 5/6 Classroom Clippings

Last Week on Friday the grade 5/6's did 5 groups on some awesome activities!

Gaelic football, gymnastics, orienteering, lacrosse, judo and ICT. We all had lots

of fun and a really good time! We will be rotating through these activities for

the rest of term. Thank you to all the teachers who organised all the activities.

This week in To Infinity and Beyond we have learnt about the Earth's Axis and

how Earth's seasons will change in the future. Did you know that in 13,000 years

the Earth’s seasons will swap and we will have a white Christmas? We have to

write an explanation about the Earth's axis and its features. The text has to

include at least 3 paragraphs of body an introduction and a conclusion.

From Morgan, Bree, Abileine and Sarah in 5H.

David and Amy collect the

weekly Sports award for Ninox.

Sporting News

This week a group of 6 MSPS students competed in the 1500m district event at Willinda Park. Our MSPS students performed brilliantly, receiving a first and five second places. All 6 of our students will progress to the Division event. I think this is our best performance at a District level ever. Congratulations Aaron Doyle, Ella Jones, Cailey Noons, Adam Crick & Ruby Alexander for receiving second place and to Josh Weddle for his first place performance. We are so proud of your achievement.

This week in the kitchen…..

This week in the kitchen we have discussed the role Russia has played in space exploration. Russia was the

first country to send up a satellite (Sputnik 1) the first country to put a man into space and then later, the

first country to put a woman into space. We have then gone on to discuss Russian foods. Cabbage and

potato appear in many Russian dishes. Their most famous dish is called borscht, its key ingredient is

beetroot, but it also contains potato and cabbage! Russians are very proud of their traditions surrounding

gingerbread. In Tula, south of Russia’s capital Moscow, gingerbread is so loved that there is even a

gingerbread museum.

We enjoyed a Russian feast fit for the Tsar. We have made Russian potato bread, Borscht (beetroot and

vegetable soup), potato Pampushki (cheese filled potato dumplings) salad Olivier (Russian style salad of

cooked vegies with a dill & mayonnaise dressing) and gingerbread!

Come and join in the fun in the kitchen. Help is required for the flowing classes:
