Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structuresGetting started:• Know the purpose : Preliminary/ Tender/ Detailed• Design Basis :
– Obtain from PM/ JPI (Ensure it is approved)– If not available, prepare, get it checked by lead and
approved by client• Essential : Geotechnical information, FGL/ NGL, foundation
solution, support definition, brief design philosophy- (including future expansion detail and expansion joint philosophy if applicable), material grade, cover requirement (for rc elements), lateral restraint assumption if any (steel structure), effective length assumption if any, software to be used
• Any specific loading requirement• Expansion joint requirement• Use check list before sending for approval
Getting startedBuilding/ Structure Potential specific loadsWork shop, ware house, store, pumping station, process buildings, maintenance building
Crane, Equipments/ plants/ services
Institutional/ commercial buildings
False ceiling, services
Control rooms, security buildings
Blast loading
Steel structures in refineries Due to fire protection
Underground chambers/ tanks Surcharge/ equipment load, nozzle forces
Pipe racks Friction/ anchor loads/ temperature
Equipment foundation Specific loading supplied by vendors
Any structure Due to future expansion
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures
Use of STAAD• Before starting STAAD model :
– Check if there is any version requirement– Confirm/ agree
• Founding depth, FGL/ NGL• Member orientations• Material properties• Support definitions, Releases• Which members are to be designed by STAAD• Design parameters
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structuresUse of STAAD• Working with STAAD model :
– Give file name easily recognizable• Avoid abbreviated names like WS/ GH/ PH• Containing revision status
– Warehouse Rev 1 – WH 03 12 13 X
– Start with project set up• Note revision description in comment box every time revised
– Keep only the latest valid file in working folder– Use levels of input drawings as levels of structure– Get the model checked after every mile stone
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Use of Spreadsheets :
– Check validity before starting– Carefully study inputs required– Check all links of cells– Ensure that all “OK”s have “If”s…
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Presentation:
– Important • Present to reviewer’s point of view• Neat and tidy• Logical flow• Avoid unnecessary bold, capital letters• Be consistent, particularly for units and terminology
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Presentation:
– Few points to keep in mind• Mention all assumptions• Mention all deviations- with drawing/ codes if any• Use figures/ illustrations/ screen shots where possible• Cross references• Appendices
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Presentation:
– Few important points which we tend to ignore• Correctness of “introduction”• Title sheet, Title block at top• Correctness of content and page numbers of index• Spell check and grammar• Mentioning the assumption made while preparing STAAD model
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Typical calculation report content:
• Main document– Title page– Index– Introduction– Design basis and methodology– Preliminary checks (like buoyancy, overturning etc if applicable)– Primary loads– Load combinations– STAAD pictures showing geometry, application of loads– Essential deflection checks– Element wise design– Summary
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structures• Typical calculation report content:
• Appendices– STAAD Input file
– STAAD Output file
– Design spread sheets
– Manufacturer’s catalogues/ tables if used in design
– Reference document to support input
– Output drawings if required by client
Remember : An appendix is like a tail : It should not
affect the content of main document
if removed..
Preparation of calculations
• Typical calculation report content :– Title
• Should have clarity of scope– Design of School X– Steel super structure design for School
– Index• Only important chapters and appendices
– Introduction• Give introduction of structure, not of project• Should contain brief detail about structure (Purpose,
material of construction, approximate size, no of floors), scope of document and brief design philosophy
Preparation of calculations
• Typical calculation report content :– Design basis and Methodology
• Must be in line with approved BoD
– Preliminary checks• Necessary for underground structures and retaining walls
especially
– Primary loads• Basis for STAAD application• One should be able to match the values with those applied in
STAAD• For large project, define primary loads at the beginning of the
projects and keep same numbers through out the project
Preparation of calculations
• Typical calculation report content :– Load Combinations
• Don’t waive any combination
– STAAD Pictures• See that it is legible in A4
– Essential deflection checks• Be careful about relative displacement• STAAD doesn’t check horizontal sway
Preparation of calculations
• Typical calculation report content :– Element wise design
• Give design forces• Cross reference of spreadsheets• As far as possible, give links of cells
– Summary• For RC elements, Size of the element, reinforcement
required and reinforcement proposed• For steel members, section size and utility ratio
Preparation of calculations : Buildings/ Process/ Water related
structuresFinally,
Go through the check list
Take print out of pdf of main document and check.
