Pedagogical Features of the Student Books Emphasize the 21st Century Skills (the 4C’s)

The 4C’s Incorporation in Scholastic Prime Mathematics for Success

Communication During routine lessons, teachers invite students to share their thoughts, questions, ideas, and solutions on newly taught concepts. ThinkAbout It encourages students to reason and justify their answers using mathematical language. Posing provides additional opportunities for students to present their questions and solutions to the class.

Collaboration Concepts are introduced through concrete activities and students work together during these activities. ThinkAbout It and provide additional opportunities for students to work with their peers.

Critical Thinking ThinkAbout It and Mind stretcher develop critical thinking by challenging students’ assumptions and misconceptions and getting students to look at problems in a new way.

Creativity During routine lessons, teachers teach different strategies to solve a problem and ask questions such as “Has anyone solved the question in another way? Share it with the class.” to encourage students to try new ways of solving the same problem.

Comprehensive Teacher SupportScholastic

TM

Mathematics program includes a comprehensive Teacher’s Guide that provides detailed lesson notes for each page of the Coursebook.

Each Teacher’s Guide includes:• detailed Scheme of Work comprising lesson objectives,

materials needed and suggested duration• Lesson Plans with scripted lesson notes to build teachers’ conceptual

understanding and provide detailed guidance on lesson delivery• answers for tasks in the Coursebook• photocopiables for class activities

TM

Professional Learning system is an online professional learning resource for teachers using Scholastic’s

TM

Mathematics program.

It incorporates learning videos which follow key topics in the TM

Mathematics Teacher’s Guide, with a simple assessment and reporting function for teachers to make learning active and participative.

Each lesson video demonstrates the teaching of a mathematical concept, and also covers the rationale for teaching the concept using the

TM

approach. Below are the topics covered in the videos:

Prepares Students for the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) TM Mathematics for Success develops students’ higher order cognitive skills and contains all three key components tested in the PEP examination.

Performance Task Real world scenarios require students to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills to solve problems. Each task requires students to apply multiple skills. Rubrics provided help teachers to assess and score each performance task.

How Do the Global Top Performers Do It? Effective Teaching and Learning Practices of Top-Performing Nations

“Teaching is for learning; learning is for understanding; understanding is for reasoning and applying and, ultimately problem solving.”

- Ministry of Education, Singapore

“Curricular emphasis is on the understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts or principles, logical thinking, problem solving, communication, and mathematical dispositions.”

- Korea National University of Education

“Students should be able to understand thoroughly what they have learnt, master problem solving confidently and develop a positive learning attitude.”

- Education Department, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

The following five practices are recognized almost universally as effective for mathematics education and are fundamental pillars of teaching and learning mathematics in the top-performing nations. These practices form the cornerstone principles of instruction and lesson delivery in

TM Mathematics for Success.

Readiness-Engagement-Mastery

Effective instruction within a unit typically involves these three phases of learning.

4

Go Beyond.

Page 7: Prepare Students for the Primary Exit Profile (PEP) and Beyond · master kill ver te oncep evelopment and earning. Develops metacognition in learners nablin he o monitor irec n ommunicat

Assessment is incorporated into the instructional design of the units to provide timely and useful feedback to teachers and learners.

Learning Mathematics by Doing Mathematics

Learning to mastery involves deep conceptual understanding through making

meaningful connections.

Learning Mathematics via Problem Solving

Problem solving is regarded not only as a goal of learning mathematics but also as a major

tool of doing so.

Development and Communication of Mathematical Thinking

Thinking mathematically is developed as a conscious habit through consistent use in many contexts.

TM Mathematics for Success has

been developed in close partnership with Jamaican Mathematics educators.

It is fully aligned to the Jamaican National Standards Curriculum, preparing students for the Primary Exit Profile (PEP).

TM Mathematics for Success is a world-class program based on the innovative and effective teaching and learning practices of top-performing Singapore, Republic of Korea and Hong Kong. The learning progressions within the program — how mathematical content progresses systematically across grades within broad mathematical topics — the distinctive feature of the top-performing nations, are maintained.

TM Mathematics for Success is based on

Problem: Mary has 25 erasers and 6 pencils. 4 of the erasers are star-shaped and the rest are round. How many round erasers does Mary have?

1Understand the problem.Describe the problem in your own words. Decide what information is needed.

How many erasers does Mary have? What shapes are they? How many erasers are star-shaped? What do I have to find? What information is not useful?

2Plan what to do.

Think of what you can do to help you solve the problem.

I can draw a bar model to show the number of erasers.

4Check

Check that your answer is correct or reasonable.

If Mary has 21 round erasers and 4 star-shaped erasers, she has a total of 25 erasers. This is the number of erasers given in the problem. So, my answer is correct.

3Work out the Answer.

Solve the problem using your plan in Step 2.

25 – 4 = 21 Mary has 21 round erasers.
