News from the P.I.T. – Priest in Training
I have been on over ten college campuses for school and missionary work. It never failed that during certain parts of the year the soap box preacher would come onto campus preaching fire and brimstone, yelling with their Bible in hand at the college students that they should repent of their sin and come to the Lord! Now I’m not disagreeing that sinners, including myself, need to repent. But I do believe the soap box preacher was taking the wrong approach, if anything, he was pushing people away from the Lord, not drawing them closer to Him!
And yet, in the Gospel today we hear about St. John the Baptist preaching like the soap box preacher! “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand!” But there is a differ-ence between the two! John the Baptist lived in the desert of Judea. Do you know how many people live in the de-sert? Not many, it’s a place of solitude and isolation. The fact was people from all over Judea and Jerusalem were going out to see the saint and listen to his message. They, except the Pharisees and Sadducees, had already made the realization that they wanted and needed to change their lives and St. John the Baptist was extending the invitation to come back to the Lord. We see it also in the life of Jesus Christ as well. Jesus goes out, yes! But it’s the sick, the lepers, the blind who call out to the Lord for healing! Again, the healing begins with their decision to seek re-pentance and turn back to the Lord.
In a same sense, I can’t force you to repent. I can’t force you to grow in your faith. This can only be done by your decision to seek out and cooperate with God’s grace. So, I encourage, better yet, I’m inviting all of us, including my-self, to prepare our hearts by repenting and turning back to the Lord!
Fr. Michael Kearney

FAITH FORMATION
Faith Matt-ers
By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation
The Last Things: Death, Judgment, and Eternal Life (December 4,)
Page 5
We’ve been journeying through the Old Testament in search of the Jewish roots of the Christian understanding of “The Last Things” (death, judgment, and eternal life). For most of the period covered by the Old Testament (1800 – 100 BC) the people of Israel had no real belief in a personal afterlife, in terms of eternal union with God (heaven) or eter-nal separation from God (hell). Rather, death was seen as the end of the story, and there was little reflection on the fate of the individual after death. All people, whether good or bad, were seen as ending up in the shadowy underworld known as Sheol in the Jewish tradition (Hades in the Greek tradition), from which there was no escape. The real focus of Jewish hope, as proclaimed by the prophets, was not on what God would do for the individual after death in some other world, but on how God would guide future generations of his chosen people towards a blessed future in this world. This all began to change around the year 200 BC with the rise of a more “apocalyptic” vision of the future. Last week we finished looking at the book of Daniel, the most fully de-veloped “apocalyptic” literature in the Old Testament, written circa 170 BC at a time when the Jewish people were undergo-ing religious persecution at the hands of their Greek rulers. Daniel 12 contains the earliest clear reference to Jewish hope in a future resurrection. In other words, death was not the end of the story for the individual, but rather, on that great future day of vindication by God, all the dead would be raised from Sheol and judged worthy of either eternal union with God (heaven) or eternal separation from God (hell).
Last week we also began to explore the 2nd Book of Mac-cabees, written shortly after the Book of Daniel, during the same period of religious persecution. Like Daniel 12, this book refers to the developing Jewish hope of a future resur-rection of the body. Second Maccabees 7 contains the touch-ing story of the martyrdom of a Jewish mother and her seven sons, who, in their dying words, give voice to the hope that
someday God would raise them from the dead and reward them for their faithfulness. Later in 2nd Maccabees, in chap-ter 12, there is an interesting reference to the developing Jewish practice of praying for the dead. (Prior to belief in a future resurrection, it would have made no sense to pray for the dead, since it was thought that there was no escape from the shadowy underworld of Sheol.) In 2 Maccabees 12, Ju-das Maccabeus, the leader of the Jewish revolt against Greek persecution, is gathering up the bodies of his fallen soldiers after a battle. He notices that, under their tunics, some of the men were wearing magical amulets dedicated to pagan gods, which was a direct violation of the First Commandment. “Turning to supplication”, Judas and his comrades “prayed that the sinful deed might be blotted out.” They took up a collection among themselves and sent the money to the priests at the Jerusalem Temple “to provide for an expiatory sacrifice.” The author then goes on to praise Judas for this act: “In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view, for thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin.” So we see here that just about 150 years before the time of Jesus, at least some Jews be-lieved in a future resurrection of the dead, and they also be-lieved that the prayers and sacrifices of the living could somehow aide the dead. This text will later become im-portant in the development of the Catholic doctrine of purga-tory.
Before we move on to the time of Jesus and the New Tes-tament, there is one more Old Testament book we need to look at relating to our topic: The Book of Wisdom. This was last book written in the Old Testament, probably circa 100 BC, and next week we will begin to explore it.

Simbang Gabi A Special Filipino Christmas Mass
Visitation Church Wednesday, December 21, 7:30 #.".
What does Simbang Gabi celebrate? By the time of the Simbang Gabi, the somber waiting at the beginning of Ad-vent turns into an eager and joyful longing for the coming of the Savior during the final nine days of Advent. This is best expressed by a Simbang Gabi ritual within the Mass when children process to the altar accompanied by an Ad-vent song while bringing an offering of an empty manger, mantle, vigil candles, and flowers. This ritual symbolizes what is at the heart of the Advent season, humbly trusting and joyfully waiting for the arrival of the promised Savior. In the darkness of the night, all sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior who is the Light of the world (John 1:2b-3). Renew in all hearts the love of God and neigh-bor which is the true sign of your kingdom come!
Fellowship dinner to follow Mass.
