The Ultimate Guide to Elves and Sprites

Year 5/6 English Work

Week Beginning 6th July 2020

Page 3: prepared by ‘Talk for Writing’. Their · genre of writing, we can still be inventive and creative. We like calling it FACTION because it is set up like an information or factual

Information with a touch of ‘faction’You are going to be writing an information text about a type of elf or sprite that you will create yourself. Of course, these are mythical figures. Even though this is a non-fiction genre of writing, we can still be inventive and creative. We like calling it FACTION because it is set up like an information or factual piece of writing, but the content is fiction.

The Ultimate Guide to Elves and Sprites…Before we move on to this week’s activities, listen to Pie Corbett reading an extract about cave elves! You can follow the story by reading the model text (on the website).

Lesson 1

Cave elves have to make occasional journeys to the market in order to buy provisions or seeds for their gardens. What 6 things might you find in a cave elf’s knapsack? Here is a list of 6 things found in a goblin’s knapsack. You can hear Pie Corbett read this aloud here: https://soundcloud.com/talkforwriting/knapsack/s-PzqyzJwV8Rb

Lesson 1TASK: Create a list of things found in a cave elf’s knapsack!

To start off your work, spend some time thinking about what would be in a knapsack…

Why would these items be in this bag? Explain the purpose of these.

Lesson 2 – your elf or spriteTo help you think about what you can create, here are some ideas…

The forest elf is found in large woods and hedgerows. It has twigs and leaves sprouting out of its head.

The river sprite lives under riverbanks. It is covered in a salmon’s scales and is very slippery to touch.

The rose elf inhabits gardens and has red, soft skin. It smells very sweet and likes to sleep in a rose’s petals.

Lemon tree elves live in grocery departments of big stores and are an astonishing bright yellow. However, they have sour spit which is best avoided.

The library sprite hides on bookshelves, is pale and, because of reading so much, tends to wear glasses.

The sky elves live in clouds, can fly with their tiny wings and have misty hair. They are the only species of elf that can fly long distances

Lesson 2 – creating a passport

Time to make your mind up. Which type of elf or sprite will you be writing about?

You will need to provide details and draw a picture. Here is an example of a passport of a unicorn. Use the template on the next page to create your own passport for one of your chosen species of elf or sprite.

Lesson 2 – creating a passport

Use the template that is on the school website to create your elf/sprite’s passport.

If you cannot print it off, simply draw and write it out in your book.

Lesson 3 – planning your report

Pie Corbett has used a box-up to put his ‘Cave Elf’ text into sections based on the order that they appear in and the content of the paragraphs. The sections are:

• The opening hook;• Appearance;• Habitat;• Behaviour;• Ending – involving the reader.

Appearance, habitat and

behaviour can be in any order!

Lesson 3Look at the box-up example on the website.

Now it’s your turn to plan an information report on your elf/sprite!

See the next slide for more information on your box-up planning.

Lesson 3 – your planUse your ideas from yesterday’s lesson to box-up your plan for your own faction text (the box-up template is also on the website).

You do not have to write in full paragraphs today! You can do this when you draft your text. Right now, you only need to write your main ideas.

Lesson 4 - drafting

Draft your text. Make sure that when you read the text aloud, it flows. If you find a sentence hard to read aloud then so will your reader. Check that you haven’t muddled up the information. Does it sound like Pie Corbett’s texts?

Lesson 5 – editing and publishing

Today, you will be reading through your final draft. Find a member of your household to read it to.

Does it flow well? Do they understand your text? Could they suggest any parts that you can improve?

Once you are happy with your final draft, we’d love you to publish on a laptop (if possible) using Word and you can include the picture of your elf/sprite within that document. When you have finished, please send them to the class email addresses because we are planning on creating………. (look at the next slide!)
