• Wars have been happening between nations long before people started writing down their history. In 20th century Europeans suffered from two world wars, which involved many countries even in the other parts of the world. Hundreds of towns and cities were destroyed. A large number of people including children were killed or wounded during those wars. In the Soviet Union only, the number or victims of the Second World War exceeded twenty million people. That is about 40 per cent of all people killed during the War.

• Total - 13 833. These data first appeared in the newspaper "Pravda" August 17, 1989. In the future, the final figure has increased slightly, presumably due to the dead from the effects of injury and illness after leaving the armed forces. As of January 1, 1999 deadweight loss in the Afghan war (killed, died of wounds, disease and accidents, missing) were evaluated in the following way The Soviet Army -Total - 15 031 people. Medical losses - almost 54 thousand wounded, shell-shocked, traumatized, 416 thousand cases.

• The exact number of people killed in the Afghan war is not known. The most common figure of one million dead, the available estimates range from 670 thousand civilians to 2 million in total. According to researchers from the U.S. war in Afghanistan, Professor M. Kramer: "In the nine years of war were killed or injured more than 2.7 million Afghans (mostly civilians), several million more were in the ranks of the refugees, many of whom have left the country" . The exact division of victims to government soldiers, the Mujahideen and civilians, apparently does not exist.
