• FRA team (May 2011)
• FAO forest monitoring colleagues (May 2011)
• FRA Advisory Group (June 2011)
• FAO Forestry leadership (July 2011)
• Finland Expert Consultation (September 2011)

FRA Long-Term Strategy -the context for FRA 2015-2030
FAO Forestry
• Human population: 1.2 billion
• Annual cereal demand: 500 million tons
• Annual sawnwood demand: 130 million m3
– An estimated 67 million ha of forest land will be converted to agriculture
z
FRA Long-Term Strategy -key expectations from users
FAO Forestry
• Provide the “big picture’’ of state and trends in global forests and forestry
• Ensure relevance of FRA to current global issues (deforestation and climate change)
• Provide high quality data on key variables
• Data quality & reliability is the key and is a higher priority than the need for widening the scope of the FRA
•Goals and objectives •Country reports & RSS •Harmonization and data sharing •Partnerships •Country ownership •Capacity-building
FRA Long-Term Strategy - Remain the same
FAO Forestry

FRA Long-Term Strategy - evolution
FAO Forestry
• Increased data quality
• Data sets more relevant at national level
• Integration of remote sensing into country reporting
• Reduced reporting burden
• Dropping variables
• Online reporting option??
z
FRA Long-Term Strategy - Integration of RSS
FAO Forestry
•Build on FRA 2010 Remote Sensing Survey methods •Work with interested countries to help enhance RS use for management planning and country reporting
z
FRA Long-Term Strategy - Evolution (2)…
FAO Forestry
•Understanding needs •Improving online access and analytical tools •Projecting the future •Increased use of non-FRA data sources
z
FRA Long-Term Strategy - Expected outputs
FAO Forestry
•Data quality will be improved
•Increased user relevance
•Reporting burden reduced
•Emphasis on important and practical variables
•Remote sensing use enhanced
•Projections produced
•Tailored analytical outputs

The Collaborative Forest Resources Questionnaire: Making Joint Data Collection Work
Background
FAO Forestry
• June 2011: FRA AG, Rome, Italy
• Sept. 2011: Expert Consultation, Finland
• Oct. 2011: C&I Workshop, Canada
• Dec. 2011: Consultation, Italy
• Feb. 2012: Montréal Process WS, Japan
• Mar. 2012: Ispra 1, Italy
• May 2012: ToS meeting, Russia
• Aug. 2012:FRA AG meeting, United States
Purpose/Why?
FAO Forestry
• To reduce data collection and reporting burdens for countries that report to FAO and one or more regional bodies
• To produce the same numbers for core variables to be used by Consortium partners
• To gain efficiencies in collection, analysis and presentation of results among data collection partners
How?
FAO Forestry
• Collaborative Forest Resources Questionnaire to be developed with variables agreed by the "Consortium"
• This will be a subset of FRA variables – estimated to include 30+ variables of shared interest
• Supplemental information will be requested by FAO for FRA 2015 and by other C&I processes for their specific needs
CFRQ Timeline
FAO Forestry
• April-July: Preparation of draft CFRQ
• May: UN ECE/FAO Team of Specialists review
• Late July: FRA Advisory Group review
• August: Multi-process meeting/working group to refine CFRQ, confirm in-country processes
• November: Final review by Consortium partners and commitments for participation in analysis and write-up of results
