1. On March 20, 1999, Swiss psychiatrist Bertrand Piccard and British balloon instructor Brian Jones made history.
2. As they flew over Mauritania, a country in northwestern Africa, the two completed the worlds' first nonstop balloon flight around the world.
3. The journey had begun 19 days earlier, on March 1, Piccard's birthday.
4. Piccard, who had just turned 41, and Jones, who was 51, had taken off from ChateauOex, a small town in the Swiss Alps.
5. Piccard comes from a family of adventurers. His father, Jaques Piccard, traveled to the greatest ocean depth ever reached using a bathyscaph, a deep sea research vessel.
