THE MATCH-UP Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards and Texans head coach Gary

Kubiak will both make their debuts on the sidelines with their respective clubs in Saturday’s contest at Reliant Stadium which serves as the preseason opener for both squads. Kansas City posted a 10-6 record a year ago in Dick Vermeil’s final pro campaign, while Houston is coming off a disappointing 2-14 campaign under Dom Capers.

Edwards returned to Kansas City as the Chiefs head coach in 2006 after previously serving as a scout and assistant coach with the club in the ’90s. He originally joined the club in ’89 as a minority fellowship coach. Owning 27 years of NFL experience as either a player, coach or a scout, Edwards spent the past five seasons as head coach of the N.Y. Jets, becoming the only coach in that franchise’s history to lead that squad to the postseason on three difference occasions.

Kubiak enters his first season as an NFL head coach after spending the past 11 seasons (’95-05) as the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos. Edwards and Kubiak both own the distinction of serving as NFL players before embarking on their coaching careers. The Chiefs head coach enjoyed a 10-year career as a cornerback with Philadelphia (’77-85), Atlanta (’86) and the L.A. Rams (’86), while Kubiak served as a quarterback for Denver (’83-91).

Although Chiefs RB Larry Johnson will likely see only brief duty in Saturday’s contest, he registered a remarkable performance in his last visit to Reliant Stadium. Johnson set a Chiefs single-game rushing record with 211 ground yards and two TDs in a 45-17 win (11/20/05).

Up next for the Chiefs is a contest at the N.Y. Giants (8/17) that will be televised nationally by FOX. The Texans travel to face the Rams in a preseason outing at St. Louis (8/19). The Chiefs will depart training camp in River Falls, Wisconsin on August 18th and will resume their preseason practice schedule in Kansas City on August 19th.

THE SERIES The road team has won all three road games of the brief Chiefs-

Texans regular season series that Kansas City leads by a 2-1 count. In the most recent meeting between the two teams, Kansas City claimed a 45-10 victory at Houston (11/20/05) as RB Larry Johnson racked up a franchise single-game record 211 rushing yards, surpassing the previous mark of 200 yards established by RB Barry Word vs. Detroit (10/14/90).

The Chiefs won their inaugural regular season meeting with the Texans by a 42-14 count at Reliant Stadium (9/21/03) in a game that featured a 73-yard punt return TD by Houston native WR Dante Hall and a pair of rushing scores from University of Texas alum RB Priest Holmes. The Texans won the only regular season outing between the two clubs at Arrowhead by a 24-21 score (9/26/04) as a 101-yard INT return by Texans CB Marcus Coleman changed the momentum of the game in Houston’s favor.

Kansas City claimed a 19-9 victory vs. Houston (8/17/02) in the only

previous preseason meeting between these two AFC franchises. That game also marked the Texans initial visit to Arrowhead Stadium. The next scheduled regular season meeting between these two teams won’t occur until 2007 when KC is again slated to visit Houston.

The Chiefs have won their last four contests played in the city of Houston. In addition to road wins against the Texans in 2003 and 2005, KC claimed a pair of victories at the Astrodome vs. the Oilers – a 20-19 regular season victory (9/1/96) and a 28-20 triumph in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game (1/16/94).

SHIELDS CAN SET KC’S GAMES PLAYED MARK IN 2006 Chiefs 11-time Pro Bowl G Will Shields has played in 208 regular

season games in a Kansas City uniform. He needs to see duty in just five more contests to surpass K Nick Lowery (212) for the most contests played in franchise annals. In 2005, Shields became just the fourth player since the AFL-NFL merger in ’70 to own a streak of 200 or more consecutive starts. Green Bay QB Brett Favre (212 games) is the only player with a longer active starting streak than Shields’ mark of 207 straight contests.

Gary Kubiak was named the second head coach in Texans

history on January 26, 2006, returning to his hometown of Houston, Texas. He served his initial NFL coaching stop as quarterbacks coach of the San Francisco 49ers (’94), guiding Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young to a Super Bowl XXIX victory. He served as offensive coordinator with Denver under head coach Mike Shanahan (’95-05). In 11 seasons, Kubiak was part of a Broncos squad that produced seven postseason trips and earned two Super Bowl titles.

Kubiak originally entered the NFL as an eighth-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in ’83. He spent his nine-year career in Denver as a backup to Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway and was part of three Super Bowl teams.

Born August 15, 1961, in Houston, Texas, Kubiak began his coaching career at his alma mater of Texas A&M (’92-93), where he coached former Chiefs RB Greg Hill. Kubiak was an All-Southwest Conference pick at Texas A&M where he led the SWC in completions (181), percentage (55.9), yardage (1,948), touchdowns (19) and total offense (1,885) as a senior.

Herm Edwards was named the 10th head coach in Kansas

City history on January 9, 2006. He rejoined the Chiefs after a five-year stint (2001-05) as head coach of the N.Y. Jets. Edwards guided the Jets to three postseason berths, the most of any coach in that franchise’s history. Edwards originally joined the Chiefs as a recipient of the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship in ’89. He later served as a scout (’90-91, ’95) and also coached defensive backs for Kansas City (’92-94).

Born in Fort Monmouth, NJ on April 24, 1954, Edwards served as Tampa Bay’s assistant head coach/DBs coach under Tony Dungy from ’96-00 before taking over as the head coaching reins of the Jets.

Edwards concluded his college career as a DB at San Diego State in ’76 and signed as a rookie free agent with Philadelphia (’77-85). In 135 career starts with the Eagles, he established a franchise record with 38 INTs, and started in Super Bowl XV. Edwards concluded his NFL playing career seeing duty in seven games for the Rams and Falcons in ’86. He then coached DBs at San Jose State (’87-89) prior to his arrival in the NFL ranks with Kansas City in ’90.

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

THE 2006 CHIEFS The Chiefs are coming off a 10-6 record in 2005 and are seeking to

return to the postseason for the first time since 2003. Herm Edwards enters his sixth season as an NFL head coach, his first guiding the Chiefs. Gunther Cunningham is his second stint as KC’s defensive coordinator after rejoining the club in 2004. Mike Solari enters his 10th season with the Chiefs and was promoted to offensive coordinator in the off-season.

Kansas City continued to bolster its defensive unit in the off-season with several more notable additions. In addition to former Pro Bowlers already on the roster such as LB Kendrell Bell, CB Patrick Surtain and S Sammy Knight, the Chiefs added five-time Pro Bowl CB Ty Law as a free agent on July 24th. The Chiefs secondary was further solidified with a pair of promising young players in S Bernard Pollard (D2-06) and S Jarrod Page (D7-06). After tabbing LB Derrick Johnson (D1-05) last season, the Chiefs also went defense with their top selection in this year’s draft in DE Tamba Hali (D1-06). LB Kawika Mitchell (D2-03) serves as the club’s defensive signal caller and appears poised for even bigger things after posting a team-high 135 tackles in 2005. DE Jared Allen (D4b-04) had a team-best 11.0 sacks and owns 20.0 sacks in his first two seasons.

The core of Kansas City’s record-setting offensive unit remains intact. Two-time Pro Bowl QB Trent Green headlines an experienced group that includes arguably the finest guard tandem in the league in 11-time Pro Bowler Will Shields and two-time Pro Bowler Brian Waters. C Casey Wiegmann is also one of the league’s top players at his position. Running behind that offensive front is Pro Bowl RB Larry Johnson, who established a franchise record with 1,750 rushing yards in 2005, including nine straight 100-yard games to close out the year. Johnson also racked up 20 rushing scores in 2005 and totaled an incredible 2,093 yards from scrimmage on the season to rank second in the league. Seven-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez continues to produce at a consistent rate and is the franchise’s all-time leading receiver, while WR Eddie Kennison has registered back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns.

Kansas City’s specialty units are headed by Mike Priefer. The Chiefs boast one of the league’s top young kicking tandems in K Lawrence Tynes and P Dustin Colquitt (D3-05). THE 2006 TEXANS QB David Carr was the first overall selection in the 2002 NFL Draft. He

owns a 17-43 record as the Texans starter. RB Domanick Davis (D4-03) has accumulated 3,195 rushing yards and 23 TDs in three seasons. Houston’s defensive line is headlined by 2006 number one overall draft pick DE Mario Williams and former Eagles DE N.D. Kalu (UFA-PHI). Veteran NT Seth Payne and DE Robaire Smith (UFA-TEN) stabilize the interior of Houston’s defensive front. Former Dolphins LB Morlon Greenwood led the club with 144 tackles (87 solo) and LB Shantee Orr paced the club with 7.0 sacks. LBs Antwan Peek (D3a-03) and DaShon Polk could also see time. Eighth-year veteran K Kris Brown handles the kickoff and placement duties. P Chad Stanley has placed 120 punts inside the 20-yard line since 2002, tops among all NFL punters. Second-year WR Jerome Mathis (D4-05) was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster as a kick-return specialist after ranking second in the conference with a 28.6-yard kickoff return average as a rookie. Mathis and Buchanon split the punt returns duties in 2005.

Bennett earned a Pro Bowl berth with Minnesota after gaining 1,296 yards in 2002. FB Ronnie Cruz is the leading candidate to start at the fullback position. RB Dee Brown was in camp with the Chiefs in 2005 and spent the final eight weeks on the roster. RB Quentin Griffin spent parts of three seasons with Denver. Needing a win to keep pace with the rest of the AFC for the playoff hunt, the Chiefs put together an impressive effort in Houston. Kansas City exploded out to a 31-7 halftime lead with scores from both sides of the ball before closing out a 45-17 win over the Houston Texans. RB Larry Johnson led the Chiefs offensive stampede with a huge night. Johnson established a Chiefs single-game rushing record with 211 yards on 36 carries for the night. With a 15-yard fourth-quarter carry, the third-year back eclipsed RB Barry Word’s previous mark of 200 yards established vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Kansas City’s defense also came up big, holding Houston to just 259 total yards and forcing three turnovers. The Chiefs opened up the scoring on their first possession of the game and didn’t let up until they had posted a season-high 45 points. After K Lawrence Tynes got the scoring barrage started with a 35-yard field goal, Johnson began going to work on his record-setting evening. Taking advantage of the NFL’s lowest-ranked rushing defense, Johnson scored on an impressive 23-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. Despite being dominated in total yardage (131-24) through the first quarter, the Texans managed to hang around thanks to a 99-yard kickoff return TD from rookie WR Jerome Mathis. The Kansas City quick-strike offense of the past few years re-emerged midway through the second quarter. In just a three-minute span the Chiefs jumped out to a 24-7 lead thanks to a pair of quick touchdowns by Kennison and Johnson. First, QB Trent Green capped a four-play, 71-yard drive by finding Kennison on a 26-yard TD pass. The 12th-year passer completed 19 of 29 passes for 220 yards with three TDs on the night. On the ensuing possession, Chiefs S Greg Wesley jarred the ball free from WR Andre Johnson, allowing CB Eric Warfield to scoop up the Texans fumble at the Houston 43-yard line. Four plays later, Johnson found the end zone for the second time with a one-yard dive, vaulting KC to a 24-7 lead late in the first half. Just as the Texans were trying to mount a late first-half scoring drive, Warfield intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown and a 31-7 halftime advantage. Houston drew within 31-17 with 10 unanswered points in the third quarter. A CB Lewis Sanders INT set up a three-yard TD run from RB Domanick Davis. After a Kansas City punt, Houston strung together another drive, resulting in a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. That would be the end of its rally. Kansas City stomped out the Texans comeback hopes by pounding out, 12-play drive that ate 7:04 off he clock and resulted in Kennison’s second touchdown of the night, a seven-yard pass from Green. The Chiefs weren’t done yet. Green would find WR Samie Parker on a six-yard scoring strike to cap the runaway 45-17 win.

On the day that head coach Dick Vermeil publicly announced his retirement, the Chiefs responded with a going away present. With his five-year run as head coach in Kansas City coming to an end, Vermeil’s players honored him the best way they knew how, by routing the Cincinnati Bengals 37-3 in the season finale. As the final seconds ticked off the clock on a bittersweet day and season, the 10-6 Chiefs were understandably filled with complex emotions. A 35-21 Pittsburgh victory over Detroit eliminated the Chiefs from the playoff picture, however the victory over Cincinnati seemed like an appropriate way to send off Kansas City’s head coach. The Chiefs and Bengals alternated field goals in the early going as K Lawrence Tynes staked the Chiefs to a 6-3 second-quarter lead. The floodgates then seemed to burst wide open as Kansas City would rattle off 31 unanswered points en route to a runaway win. The Chiefs posted gaudy numbers on both sides of the ball, piling up a season-high 537 total yards of offense and giving up a season-low 161 yards to Cincinnati. With a nine-yard carry late in the second quarter, RB Larry Johnson etched his name in the Chiefs record book as the franchise’s single-season rushing yardage leader, surpassing RB Priest Holmes’ mark of 1,615 yards in 2002. Just for good measure, Johnson followed that up with a 49-yard TD gallop on the very next carry. In taking a 13-3 lead, the Pro Bowl runner also eclipsed the 100-yard barrier for the ninth consecutive game, tying as the third-longest streak in NFL history. Johnson finished his remarkable season with 1,750 rushing yards and 20 TDs. Moments later Chiefs S Sammy Knight would pick off the first of the Chiefs two INTs on the game. The INT from QB Jon Kitna – who had replaced Pro Bowler Carson Palmer after one quarter – gave Johnson another chance to bring the sellout Arrowhead crowd to their feet. From the 14-yard line Johnson took a toss left and spun out of a tackle attempt from DE David Pollack near the sideline. He then reversed his field and accelerated toward the other sideline, picking up a block from QB Trent Green on his way into the end zone to grab a 20-3 lead at the half. Johnson and the Chiefs weren’t even close to be finished. On the opening possession of the second half an 18-yard pass to WR Eddie Kennison helped push Kansas City into scoring possession. With the crowd chanting “Lar-ry, Lar-ry,” Johnson scored his third TD of the game, following blocks from T Willie Roaf and WR Marc Boerigter on a 20-yard sweep around the left end. The third-year ball-carrier finished with 201 yards, topping the 200-yard mark for the second time on the season. Tynes would add his third field goal of the game, raising the Chiefs lead to 30-3 late in the third quarter. The final blow came when Green capped off a brilliant afternoon by hitting RB Dee Brown for an eight-yard touchdown pass.
