There is a song by Carlos Santana called, “Migra”, and the lyrics go like this ... “Migra! Migra! Pinche Migra, Dejame En Paz!”. And if President Obama gets his

way, la pinche migra will have to halt over 39,000 deportations and let “low level risk” illegal immi-grants that are currently detained to be set free here in the United States. President Obama is using the issue of illegal immigration to his political cam-paign advantage. The dude is no “estupido”. Every damn politician wants the Hispanic vote -even “ra-cist politicos” in all fifty states.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Illegal Immigration is just “episodes of frustration” by white people, black folk, “coconuts” and “old farts” in government who have nothing else to do, but whine about everyone else that don’t live up to their standards.

It is true. There is plenty of “illegal immigrants” in this country. And yes, there is plenty of “undesi-rables”. But heck, there is plenty of “undesirables” in the U.S. Capital and around state capitals all over the country. Much of the problem is this ... for some reason or another, some “racist politicos” seem to target “Mexicans”. There are thousands of illegal immigrants from different parts of the world that are worth throwing across the waters, but I guess the Mexicans seem to be the “poster children” for the United State’s unbearable concern over illegal im-migration.

If politicians want to politically fret over the illegal immigration issue, let’s not forget the other “wetbacks” such as the Haitians, Cubans, Asians, Jamaicans, The Puerto Rican and maybe one or two Canadians.

I don’t mean to be derogatory in describing “illegal aliens”. I’ve been called a “wetback” when I was a kid living in Illinois. I am an “American citi-zen” with “American Citizen parents” and “Ameri-can Citizen grandparents”. Go figure.

In 2011, The United States has deported 396, 906 illegal immigrants and out of those deported 216,700 people had criminal convictions (felony or misdemea-nor). Congress has mandated that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deport 400,000 per year. Did you read that? Mandate -as in “you better find alot of Mexicans to get rid-off or else”.

But just like everything else in this country,

“Illegal Immigration and Deportation” is a money-making business. Whether we know it or not, it is.

HERE IS A SCENARIO:“Man finds “coyote” and pays him money to

cross him across the border. Man works for an American for very low wages and produces for the American. Illegal man gets caught by U.S. Border Patrol Agent who gets paid by U.S. Tax Dollar. Man is sent to detention center that gets paid to house “illegal immigrant” man. Man is sent to court and gets seen by Federal Judge re-presented by a public defender (no comment) who also gets paid by U.S. Tax dollars. Man is set a bail bond by the judge and man’s family pays a large sum of American money for the bail bond to the U.S. Federal Court. Man is free. Man comes back and repeats the cycle and politicians get more donations for their campaigns to fight illegal immigration.”

Voila! By the end of the day, hun-dreds of thousands of dollars has been ex-changed within the illegal immigration hoopla. This is The American Dream.

If Immigrants were to stop cros-sing the border Illegally, I think we’d be pretty bored and there would be plenty of government lay-offs. So, you see, this “ethnic cleansing” is nothing but a never-ending money-making scheme covered in a pile of pigeon shit.

Before immigration reform, there was a thing called “all men are created equal” and “the pursuit of happiness”. So, get rid of the “Riff-Raff”, but not the hard worker. Get rid of the “degenerates”, but not the honest man that lives for the sake of his fa-mily.

So, Illegal immigration doesn’t matter to the point of losing sleep. Why? It’s always been and it always will. So, let’s keep America working, shall we? We all benefit in some way or another.

A FOX NEWS report sta-ted that UFO sightings have increased drama-

tically in The United States. In New Year’s Eve, The National Reporting Center received 110 reports. The director of the Na-tional Reporting Center, Peter Davenport, said in an interview with FOX NEWS, “something is going on”. Thirty-six out of the fifty states have been reporting strange objects passing through our skies. When asked if it had something do with the subject of “The End of the Mayan Calen-dar”, Mr. Davenport could not give an explanation, but said that more people have been submit-ting videos and photographs of strange objects in the sky.

In just the mere months of January and February 2012 there has been 628 official UFO reports only in The Uni-ted States. Italy, Mexico, Ja-pan and the UK, have reported highly-evolved flying objects interfering their air-space.

Mexico’s Ministry of Defense released the video to the public and that same video and a report was sent to the United States government. Mr. Bassett stated, “the Mexican go-vernment and many governments, including France are losing pa-tience with the United States over the embargo of UFO disclosure and the truth about Extra-Terres-trial life.” .

In the video, the Mexican Military records eleven UFO’s in flight. The video is now being ca-lled “historic”. “Many countries are sending out reports to The United States so the truth about contact with extra-terrestrials can come out,” said Mr. Bassett. “It is clear that The United States go-vernment knows the truth about “alien contact” and are not telling other countries about it. France, especially is pretty fed-up that our government is still insisted about hiding the truth.”

Mexico had seen overwhel-

ming UFO activity and now the Mexican government is clearly showing the world the UFO vi-deo captured by their military that the truth is obvious . Members of the Mexican Defense Department states that “it is the first time that UFO’S have had the backing of any country’s armed forces”.

Former United States Astro-naut Dr. Edgar Allen Mitchell, and one of only twelve men who walked on the moon on February 6, 1971, said in a recent Florida interview with Channel News 5 that alien life forms are among us. “They‘ve been here and they are still here.” he said. “Extra-terrestrials have been monito-ring us. I know this because of all the data and facts that I have gathered since my NASA days.”

Other Former U.S. Astro-nauts that have been coming forward with the truth are Buzz Aldrin and Gordon Cooper. Before coming into the NASA space program, Mercury 7 As-tronaut Gordon Cooper was a military fighter jet pilot. When in flight over Europe, Gordon Cooper and the other pilots en-countered several UFO‘s. Mr.

Cooper said, “they were very fast and were doing flight ma-neuvers that no plane in this pla-net could do”. Gordon Cooper also witness a UFO land on a dry-lake bed when supervising a filming for a landing procedu-re for F-86 fighting jets. A UFO went just over the camera and landed. “It was a typical saucer shape UFO,” he stated. “We picked up the cameras and went towards it and it just lifted up and disappeared.”

Former U.S. Astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon revealed that when in flight to the moon in Apollo 11 they were not alo-ne. “We were being followed along side during the flight. We were being observed. I and the other two astronauts saw this UFO just beside us three days into the space flight.”

Sin que se conozcan aún las causas exactas del siniestro que acabó con el edificio del

hotel Laredo Motor Inn y con la vida de dos personas que estaban en una de sus habitaciones, el pro-pietario ya hizo la demolición.

El Laredo Motor Inn se incendió la madrugada del 5 de septiembre del 2011 por causas que aún se descono-cen, pero que se cree fue provocado por una falla en la caja de fusibles que tenía el hotel ubicado en 4210 East Saunders.

Unas 20 personas vivían como si fuera casas de renta en las habi-taciones de este hotel de 30 años de antigüedad. Una inquilina identifi-

cada como Simona García, de 43 años de edad, perdió la vida junto con su nieto Joel Llanes de apenas cinco años.

El encargado del turno noctur-no alcanzó a dar aviso a todos los inquilinos pero la señora García ja-más abrió la puerta y falleció junto con su pequeño nieto.

El dueño de la propiedad, Fer-nando Cantú, quien también posee otros hoteles como Posada del Car-men y Loma Alta, acaba de ordenar la demolición del antiguo edificio sin que las autoridades de bombe-ros hayan dictaminado aún cual fue la causa del trágico incendio.

Tampoco se informó si los in-quilinos que vivían en este lugar re-cibieron alguna indemnización por

las pertenencias que perdieron en el incendio.

Inicialmente se les dijo que el seguro no les iba a cubrir nada y para tenerlos contentos, se les pagaron va-rios días de estancia en los otros ho-teles propiedad de Cantú.

Algunos de los que vivían en el lugar aseguraron que no tenían ex-tinguidores y que las instalaciones eléctricas eran deficientes y que unos días antes del incendio acudió una persona a realizar unas reparaciones.

Es posible que la caja de fu-sibles no tuviera la capacidad su-ficiente para que las personas vi-vieran en las habitaciones como si fueran apartamentos usando estufas eléctricas, hornos de microondas y otros aparatos como refrigeradores.

Hacen demolición

El dueño del hotel Laredo Motor Inn ya hizo la demolición del edificio quemado donde murieron dos personas en sep-tiembre del año pasado.

Democrat Joseph P. Kennedy III officia-lly announced his Congressional bid Thursday to replace retiring Rep. Barney Frank of Massachu-setts. Joseph is the grandson of former senator and U.S. Attorney Robert Kennedy. Joseph made it clear that he will not win because he is a “Kennedy”. He said he will win because he has red hair, freckles and looks like the guy from “Happy Days”.

White House predicts 2 million more jobs in 2012 ... and they also predicted that “The Ma-yan Calendar” is correct. The world will end December 21, 2012 and it will take 2 million people to reconstruct earth. The Good ,The Bad and the Ugly

LO BUENO

Las fiestas del Natalicio de George Washington de-mostraron una vez más que en Laredo la gente es noble, disfruta de la vida y participa de su cultura.

Al cumplirse en este 2012 un total de 115 años de estos festejos, la gente vibró con la música, se deleitó con la comida, disfrutó de desfi-les, de un espectáculo aéreo y hasta viendo a un hombre que se comió 106 chiles jala-peños en 15 minutos para ga-narse mil dólares, dinero que le servirá de poco para pagar al doctor cuando la gastritis

no lo deje dormir, porque lo fácil es que entren, lo difícil viene cuando salen.

Lo único criticable es el dineral que gastan en los ves-tidos las damas que participan en el baile de la Sociedad de Martha Washington, con lo que cuestan estos trapos de lujo que usan sólo una vez, se podrían pagar varias becas de colegio a estudiantes pobres ¿No creen?

LO MALO

El “despapaye” que se traen en las cortes federales y estatales junto con los legisla-dores republicanos de Texas

que no se ponen de acuerdo para delinear el nuevo mapa electoral en el estado, lo que demorará la elección prima-ria hasta quien sabe cuando.

La elección estaba pro-gramada para el 6 de marzo, ahora está para el 3 de abril pero se espera que se cambie posiblemente para mayo.

De por sí la gente no vota en el condado de Webb, pues con esta movida política de los republicanos en Austin, menos personas saldrán a vo-tar cuando se les hinche fijar una fecha.

Los que están bien enca-britados por esta decisión son los políticos, pues algunos ya

comenzaron a empeñar hasta a la “vieja” para soportar los gastos de una campaña que de-bería terminar el 6 de marzo. Y sufren más los que le pagan a “cañoneros”, dizque para sacar votos cuando en realidad sólo les sacan dinero.

LO FEO

La suspensión de Felicia-no García Jr. como gerente general en El Metro es una muestra de que en Laredo hay tranzas pero casi siempre están muy bien disfrazadas.

Este “bárbaro” de García fue suspendido porque inten-tó “donar” dos vehículos de

El Metro a una ciudad de San Luis Potosí sin tener la apro-bación del cabildo. El angelito argumentó que él no sabía que los regidores y el regente mu-nicipal tienen que aprobarlo.

Para terminar con el pro-blema, la empresa First Tran-sit lo transfirió a Colorado y pondrá un nuevo gerente en Laredo. García se salvó de ser investigado a fondo y hasta de recibir cargos por-que le ayudó la protección que le dan algunos regidores a quienes les hacía favores especiales. Ahora espera que de “perdis” le manden tequi-la y colchitas de lana para aguantar el frío de Colorado.

If you had a rental proper-ty, would you endanger a tenant for a few bucks? If

a good conscious directs you, then you won’t; but if you could sleep good at night knowing that you just made a few lousy bucks from a hazardous rental property - then a slumlord you are! Out of 250,000 inhabitants in Laredo, thirty two percent are in poverty and are forced to live in houses that are in poor condition. Most of these homes are uninhabitable and even dangerous for the occupants and the neighboring homes.

Even though the City Of Laredo has ordinances that es-tablish safety requirements for housing, there is only one ins-pector that enforces it. When asked why there is only one inspector, Erasmo Villareal, di-rector of the Laredo’s Building Services Department stated that inspectors are limited due to city’s budget. Mr. Villareal said, even though we only have one inspector we close down 25 to 50 homes each year that are in very poor conditions. “We could do so much more if we only had more inspectors,” he said.

In September of 2011, a fire claimed the lives of a 6-year-old boy and his grand-mother at The Laredo Motor Inn located in the 4200 block of East Saunders. Was this property up to par with the ne-cessary safety requirements? There is housing all over Lare-do that are in dire straits, but is certainly within the budget of the indigent.

“If there are homes with bad plumbing, wall corrosion or bad electrical wiring, we can take action to force the ow-

ner to repair or demolish it,” Mr. Villareal said.

Of course those who suffer from these type of dire dwellings are the families living in these houses. These people are there because they can not afford an-ything else that is suitable.

“If we apply and enforce the ordinance one hundred percent in all cases we could demolish more homes, but the reality is that we must act with discretion because there are many families that will wind-up in the street,” Mr. Vi-llarreal stated. “The inspector in charge of investigating such ho-mes will act firmly if he sees vio-lations that are highly visible and a threat to safety.”

According to rule, property owners have 21 days to respond when a violation occurs. “The property owner may choose to make repairs that are required or may decide that the house be demolished. They can choose,” he said. “If the owners do not respond within the prescribed period, the case is brought before a building committee to analy-

ze the evidence that we provide and then they decide if the home needs to be demolished because of safety concerns.”

Most homes that need safety review are within the neighbor-hoods of La Azteca, San Fran-cisco Javier, Santo Nino and the western part of the city; but poor housing still exists in various parts of the city.

Last year, The Laredo Ho-meless Coalition did a study and concluded that there are more than 1,400 people who are home-less and destitute in Laredo, but the number is growing weekly. Situations like these force many families to live virtually anywhe-re their budget allows them - this includes neglected and damaged homes that pose a serious risk to the occupants.

The Texas Attorney General outlines your right as a tenant on their website. Knowledge is always your best defense against a slumlord or any landlord that seems to avoid serious repairs. Always make your plea to a lan-dlord in writing and mail it via a

certified mailing for proof of your complaint.

Health and SafetyYou have a right to demand

that the landlord repair any con-dition that materially affects your health and safety. Under Texas law, by renting you the property, the landlord guarantees that the unit will be a fit place to live.

SB 1448 (81st Regular Ses-sion), effective January 1, 2010, now grants justices of the peace authority to order landlords to re-pair or remedy conditions affec-ting a tenant’s health and safety, as long as the cost of the repair does not exceed $10,000. Tenants can go to justice court without an attorney to obtain a repair order.

Under certain conditions, you and the landlord may have a writ-ten agreement that you will make needed repairs. The landlord does not have a duty to pay for or make repairs if you or your guests cause an unsafe or unhealthy condition through negligence, carelessness, abuse or accident—unless the condition resulted from “normal

wear and tear.”Also, the landlord must

provide smoke detectors. You may not waive that provision, and you may not disconnect or disable the smoke detector.

If You Have ProblemsIf the landlord won’t make

repairs needed to protect your health, safety, or security, and you follow the procedures re-quired by law, you may be en-titled to:

• End the lease;• Have the problem re-

paired and deduct the cost of the repair from the rent; or

• File suit to force the landlord to make the repairs.

Under Texas law, it is ille-gal for a landlord to retaliate against you for complaining in good faith about necessary re-pairs for a period of six months from the date you made such a complaint. Of course, you can always be evicted if you fail to pay your rent on time, threaten the safety of the landlord or intentionally damage the pro-perty.

You do not have a right to withhold rent because the landlord fails to make repairs when the condition needing re-pair does not materially affect your health and safety. If you try this method, the landlord may file suit against you.

If you think that a home is not up-to-par with the safety requirements and the landlord has disregarded your plea, please contact The Laredo Building Service’s Department at (956) 794-1625.

If this fails, your best bet is the courtroom. No matter how bad the circumstance is, no one should be forced to live in a dwe-lling that is a serious risk factor.

Viven en casas inservibles

Familias de bajos recur-sos habitan casas que se encuen-tran en condiciones deplorables.

Obligados por la pobre-za, hay familias que se arriesgan a vivir en

viviendas en muy malas condi-ciones con el peligro de incen-dios y con las incomodidades de una casa que muchas veces es inhabitable.

Se estima que un 32.3 por ciento de los 250 mil habitan-tes de Laredo vive bajo el nivel de pobreza y muchos de ellos utilizan casas en condiciones deplorables y hasta peligrosas para ellos y para sus vecinos.

Aunque el gobierno de la Ciudad de Laredo tiene un có-digo de ordenanzas que esta-blece requisitos de seguridad para que las viviendas sean ha-bitables, sólo hay un inspector que revisa su cumplimiento.

Las autoridades munici-pales clausuran entre 25 y 50 viviendas cada año por estar en muy malas condiciones para ser habitadas, pero po-drían ser mucho más si hubiera más personal revisándolas y las ordenanzas se aplicaran estrictamente.

Erasmo Villarreal, director del Departamento de Construc-ción en Laredo, dijo que sólo hay un inspector encargado de hacer revisiones de casas que tienen problemas y pueden representar un peligro.

“Si se detectan casas con

la plomería en malas condicio-nes, con las paredes de made-ra muy podrida o el alambrado eléctrico casi quemado, po-demos tomar acciones para obligar al dueño a repararla o demolerla”, afirmó.

Señaló sin embargo, que quienes sufren por estas accio-nes son las familias que habi-tan estas casas, pues están ahí porque no tienen dinero para algo mejor.

“Si aplicáramos las orde-nanzas al cien por ciento en todos los casos podríamos clausurar más viviendas y demolerlas, pero la realidad es que debemos actuar con crite-rio pues esas familias podrían quedarse en la calle”, agregó.

De esta manera, el inspec-tor municipal encargado de revisar casas en malas con-diciones, procura proceder cuando las violaciones a las ordenanzas de seguridad sean muy visibles y pongan en ries-go a otros.

Villarreal dijo que los due-ños de las casas tienen un plazo de 21 días para respon-der cuando se les notifica una violación a las ordenanzas en sus viviendas.

“La persona puede optar por hacer las reparaciones que se requieran o bien pueden de-cidir la demolición de la casa,

ellos escogen”, dijo.Si los dueños no responden

dentro del plazo señalado, el gobierno municipal inicia en-tonces un proceso para clausu-rarlas.

“El caso se lleva ante un comité de construcción que analiza las evidencias que les damos y toma una decisión ya sea para cerrar la casa o bien para hacer la demolición por ser muy peligroso que la habi-ten”, indicó.

La mayoría de las viviendas que están en muy dañadas y algunas de ellas inhabitables, se localizan en vecindarios muy antiguos como El Azteca,

San Francisco Javier, Santo Niño y en algunas áreas del oeste de la ciudad.

El año pasado La Coalición de Personas sin Hogar en La-redo, hizo un estudio y señaló que hay mil 460 personas que no tienen casa y son indigen-tes, pero la cifra crece cada semana y cada mes.

Esto obliga a muchas fa-milias a vivir prácticamente donde se pueda y donde su presupuesto les permita aun-que mientras más barata sea una renta, más descuidada y dañada estará la casa donde vivan y mayor será el riesgo de un incendio o de un accidente.

APAGAN INCENDIO DESPUÉS DE 180 AÑOS

Un incendio que se inició hace 180 años en una mina de carbón al noroeste de China ha podido ser apagado por fin por un equipo de bomberos que llevaba trabajando en la extinción desde 1997. El fuego fue provocado, al parecer, en el siglo XIX (dinastía Qing) por unos mineros descon-tentos con su capataz, en la mina Rujigou. Aunque los habitantes de la zona habían intentado apagarlo de vez en cuando, los primeros intentos serios de extinguirlo em-pezaron hace 10 años. El incendio ha devorado en casi dos siglos 30 millones de toneladas, la décima parte de la reserva del yacimiento, y ha puesto en peligro a la pobla-ción local, con la frecuente apa-rición de humeantes grietas en el suelo. Debido a la alta toxicidad de los humos, cada bombero podía trabajar cerca del incendio sólo 10 minutos, lo que eternizó las tareas. Los incendios de larga duración en minas, muy difíciles de apagar debido a las dificultades de acce-so, son frecuentes en países como China o la India.

CHEATING SEX COULD BE YOUR LAST

HOUSTON - Death during sexual intercourse doesn’t happen very often.

But when it does, most of the time the victim is ha-ving an extramarital affair.

That’s one startling conclusion of a new study led by a professor at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Glenn Levine also runs the Cardiac Care Unit at Houston’s VA Hospital.

Levine and his colleagues found that 75% of people who died in the arms of a sexual partner were actually cheating on their spouses.

Most were older men having a fling with younger women, and alcohol usually played a role.

The study appears in the current edition of the Ame-rican Heart Association’s journal “Circulation.”

NEARLY NUDE TEXAS TEEN LEADS COPS

(NEWSCORE) - A drunk Texas teen led police on a low-speed car chase before she was apprehended wearing nothing but her cowboy boots.

Houston News reported that cha-se stemmed from a complaint last Sa-turday about a suspicious person in an upper-middle class neighborhood in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Once on the sce-ne, police discovered 18-year-old Taylor Burnham standing naked between a Jeep Wrangler and a backyard fence.

Instead of talking to the police, Burnham ran into the Jeep Wrangler and drove off.

The chase ended after a mile-and-a-half of low-speed driving.

A female officer helped the naked Burnham clothe herself before she was given a variety of sobriety tests, which she duly failed.

poner en peligro a sus hijos y ante el aumento de casos, hay quienes piensan que esta legislación debe ser revisada cuidadosamente y apli-cada con más criterio para evitar la separación de familias.

El Código Penal de Texas esta-blece que si una persona, sin impor-tar el parentesco, pone en peligro o descuida a un menor de 15 años, comete un delito clasificado en gra-do de felonía cuarta y castigado con seis meses a dos años de cárcel.

“No todos los arrestos re-sultan en un proceso ante una corte, cada caso es estudiado de manera individual y se trata con mucho cuidado porque involucra a padres y madres”, dijo Ramón Villafranca, jefe de la división de víctimas especiales en la oficina del Fiscal de Distrito.

Los casos, agregó, son anali-zados uno a uno en el Centro de Protección Infantil (Child Advo-cacy Center) por un equipo mul-tidisciplinario integrado por ele-mentos de varias agencias de la ley y del Departamento de Servi-cios de Protección Infantil (CPS).

Villafranca mencionó que el personal de CPS es quien real-mente determina si un caso ame-rita ir ante una corte, ya que en algunos arrestos hay más agra-vantes si los adultos dejan a los niños encerrados en las casas para irse o los dejan en un estaciona-miento para entrar a una tienda.

Sin embargo, hay casos menos graves donde uno de los padres se queda dormido en la casa y el niño abre la puerta y se sale o andan en un parque y en un pequeño descui-do el infante corre hacia la calle.

“Tratamos de obrar con crite-rio porque entendemos que es un delito especial, se trata de perso-nas que no querían o no tenían in-tención de poner en peligro a sus hijos, pero la ley establece que al-guien debe ser responsable”, dijo.

cuando de repente oyeron fuertes toqui-dos a la puerta. Atisbaron por la ventana y era un oficial de la policía. Abrieron y 15 minutos más tarde ya estaban arres-tados. El delito, fue que el hijo de ambos de tres años de edad fue encontrado vagando por el vecindario a las tres de la mañana.

María, estaba trabajando en un restau-rante de la localidad al norte de Laredo, cuando también de repente fue esposada y llevada a la cárcel, porque su hijo de cuatro años, se había salido de la casa, donde estaban sus otros hermanos bajo el cuidado de una joven mujer que aparente-mente se quedó dormida y los descuidó.

Esta y otras historias más se han es-tado escribiendo en nuestra localidad ya que existe un gran número de casos en que los menores se salen de sus viviendas sin la supervisión de sus padres y cada vez son más los que son arrestados bajo cargos de poner en peligro a un menor.

Para el policía escolar Alex Rodríguez, consultado al respecto, esta ley es un tanto ingrata, pues cada día son más los niños precoces que se habilitan de una manera para poder abrir las puertas, in-cluso con candado, y salir hacia la calle.

¨Esta ley es injusta y está provocando que padres sin problemas con la ley se conviertan en delincuentes, debido a la vivacidad de los menores que encuen-tran la manera de salirse de su casa, sin saber que están causando un serio problema a sus padres¨, dijo el oficial policiaco.

Descuidar a los hijos si son menores de 15 años puede hacer que un papá o una mamá vayan a la cárcel.

Sobre la custodia de los ni-ños en estos casos, Villafranca dijo que se busca que los infantes queden en manos de uno de los padres que no haya sido arrestado porque no se desea separar fami-lias ni afectar a los menores.

Can a simple switch in your brain

make you happier?

Can you learn to be a hap-pier person by repeatedly visualizing two tiny parts

of your brain and imagining yourself tweaking them?

Colorado teacher and musi-cian Neil Slade says you can.

Slade has developed brain exercises aimed at lifting your spirits and calming your fears. The website, neilslade.com, has become something of an under-ground sensation, attracting an average of 750,000 hits a month through word of mouth alone.

Slade suggests visualizing part of the primitive brain called the amygdala, commonly des-cribed as the seat of emotional experience. The two amygdalae, each about the size and shape of an almond, are located on either side of the head, between the eye and ear, about an inch in. Studies have shown the amygdalae have a part to play in everything from memory storage to anxiety.

Slade recommends locating your amygdalae in your thoughts, and visualizing a switch on each one, with the click-back posi-tion turning on the fear feelings, and the click-forward position turning on feelings of pleasure. Picture yourself purposefully clicking the switch forward.

Another way to stimulate lighter and happier feelings is to

visualize yourself tickling each amygdala with a feather.

When University of Toron-to psychologist Adam Anderson heard about the exercises, he laughed. The assistant profes-sor is also the Canada Research Chair in cognitive neuroscien-ce, and his research focuses on what the amygdalae contribute to human emotion. Anderson believes they are one of the ele-ments of our feelings, but human emotions result from a delicate balance of the functions of diffe-rent brain parts.

“I’m not saying it can’t work, but it’s a really silly idea that you actually have to picture your amygdala,” he says. “You could teach people to visualize their left elbows and it might be just as effective.

“It’s a form of relaxation and, if it works, more power to the people who do it. But as a scientist, I see it as maybe a form of meditation or a distrac-tion from what’s bothering you”.

Slade thinks there is more to it than that. He believes visua-lizing the amygdalae can crea-te physiological changes in the brain.

“You can directly elevate your mood through behavioural change such as laughter or phy-sical exercise, or you can eleva-te it through mental stimulation like these amygdala exercises”.

Buen carácter moral: en general, un solicitan-te debe demostrar ser una persona de buen carácter moral durante el periodo legal (tipicamente cinco años, pero tres años si el solicitante se casó con un ciudadano estadouni-dense, o un año si el solicitante sirvió en las fuerzas arma-das de Estados Unidos), antes de solicitar la naturaliza-ción. A un solicitante se le excluye permanentemente de la naturalización si alguna vez fue acusado de cometer un asesinato o un delito grave. debe demostrar que se adhiere a los principios de la Cons-titución de Estados Unidos.

Idioma: con ciertas excepciones, quienes solicitan la naturalización deben leer, escribir, hablar y comprender palabras de uso corriente en el idioma inglés y compren-sión de los fundamentos de la historia y civismo además de los principios y forma de gobierno de Estados Unidos.

Juramento de lealtad: para convertirse en ciu-dadano, se debe rendir el juramento de lealtad. Al hacerlo el solicitante jura: apoyar la Constitución y obedecer las leyes de Estados Unidos; renunciar lealtad a cualquier go-bierno, país y/o título extranjeros; empuñar las armas para las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos o desempeñar ser-vicios para el gobierno de Estados Unidos cuando le sea requerido por ley. Approximately seventy percent of donated blood is transfused to patients undergoing treatments for cancers such as leukemia while the remaining 30% is used for trauma patients and surge-
