Since 1980, the United Nations World Tourism Organization

(UNWTO) has celebrated World Tourism Dayon September 27.

This date was chosen as on that day in 1970, theStatutes of the UNWTO were adopted. The adoptionof these Statutes is considered a milestone in globaltourism.

At its Twelfth Session in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 1997, theUNWTO General Assembly decided to designate a host countryeach year to act as the Organization's partner in the celebration ofWorld Tourism Day.

At its Fifteenth Session in Beijing, China, in October 2003, theAssembly decided the following geographic order to be followedfor World Tourism Day celebrations: 2006 in Europe; 2007 in

South Asia; 2008 in the Americas; 2009 in Africa and 2011 in theMiddle East.

Did you Know?

Tourism directly represents 5% of global GDP.

Tourism is responsible for over 235 million jobs, or one inevery twelve jobs worldwide.

Tourism is the fourth largest export sector in the world, afterfuels, chemicals and automotive products, generating overUS$ 1 trillion a year in exports.

In some developing countries tourism can account for over25% of GDP.

In 2012, there will be one billion international touristtravelling in the world.

Short History of UNTWO

1970:The statutes of the world Tourism organization(WTO) are adopted on

27th September, known from 1979 onwards as World Tourism Day.

1975: The first WTO secretary-general is appointed and the GeneralAssembly establishes WTO headquarters in Madrid, Spain.

1998: The WTO. Themis foundation is created in Andorra to promote qualityand efficiency in tourism education and training.

2000: The United Nations statistics commission approves the internationalstandards included in the Tourism Satellite Account(TSA).

2001: The UN general assembly officially recognizes the Global code ofEthics of Tourism.

2007: UNWTO presents the Davos declaration, the tourism sectorsresponse to the challenges of climate change.

Short History of UNTWO

2009:The 18th UWTO General Assembly approves the Roadmap for

Recovery to see the tourism sector through the 2008-2009 globaleconomic crisis.

2002: 2002 is declared as the International year of the Ecotourism.

2003: WTO joins the UN system, becoming UNTWO, the UN Specializedagency for Tourism.
