Shirley was on the welcome desk today with Terry Lynch on deck for October. President Sandy opened the meeting with another little story from her recent trip to Alaska. While staying in a lodge on an island, she awoke to some late-night noises. On carefully approaching the source of the sound, they discovered three horses nosing around on the deck. Apparently a pretty normal occurrence on the islandhome to some wild horses. Neat! President Sandy’s theme for our year… “OURYEARTOGROW” This month’s meetings are sponsored by Rotarian Clint Kuschak. Sponsor for the month Clint referred to the latest issue of Bayview that included a fine article on the TBSO and its new Music Director, Arthur Post. A pull-out in the magazine in the form of a compact calendar lists all of the musical offerings by the TBSO this season. Clint will have extra copies of this handy calendar at our next meeting. Single tickets go on sale for all TBSO concerts on September 27 th but value-priced subscription packages are still availableincluding the very popular Select Six coupon package that lets you program your own concert season. And tickets are selling well for the special anniversary concert with Tom Cochrane and his Band Red Rider. The concert will be presented on Saturday, October 16 th , 25 years to the date from the official opening of the Auditorium. The Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has launched two newinitiatives for rooftop solar installations. The programs are calledFIT and MicroFIT and they will be here to stay for the next twoyears. Those first to participate in the MicroFIT program will begiven the opportunity to rooftop-install up to 10 kilowatts of solarand be paid a twenty year contractually guaranteed price of $0.802per kilowatt! Those wishing to install more than 10 kilowatts of solarwill fall into the FIT program and will be paid a lucrative rate as well.Think about it, every 2 to 3 months you will receive a cheque fromthe hydro company instead of a bill, are you interested? This year’s 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run was held onSunday, September 19 at Boulevard Lake. 550+ participants joinedin the Run – running, jogging, walking, strolling, biking andwheeling –around the lake…and some more than once. Donestimates more than $15,000 was raised this year. The weatherwas great and everyone enjoyed the day…in tribute to Terry. Donthanked everyone who came out to help with the Run.

DECEMBER DREAMS 2010:Our first fund raising event in this Rotary year is still some monthsaway but registration forms have gone out to the 65+ artisans whowant to sign up for December Dreams 2010. Clint announced thatbooths sales have gone extremely well and all but two of the boothshave been rented…and he predicted the last two would be gone bythe end of the day.

SHELTER FOOD DRIVE 2010:The annual Food Drive for Rotary Shelter House takes place at allthree local Metro stores on September 25th, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. Lakehead Rotarians will take care of the Arthur StreetMarketplace Metro and a sign-up sheet made the rounds today.

This is an easy community service for us and a big part of Shelter’s ability to feed its clients heading into the Christmas season. KenBoshcoff is our Club leader for this community service so pleasecontact him to add your names. Here is the list to date:

FELLOWSHIP FINES:Richard scored a full sweep starting out with a little “recognition”ofPresident Sandy and tribute from Bill for helping our speakers withtheir presentation. Ken was acknowledged for his run for Counciland Clint was recognized for the recent publicity for the TBSO andits $500,000 fund raising campaign. Those who did not help out orparticipate in the Marathon, the Terry Fox Run, or the Aids Walkpaid some tribute and if any escaped these ploys, the sweep wassecured with a dollar from all who do not have solar panels on theirhomes. Garry Kushner gave his happy dollar announcing the moveto their new office at 1144 Oliver Road [by the veterinary clinic].And Allan gave a happy/sad dollar for the latest “battle ofOntario”…with the recent games between the Senators and Leafsand each taking a win.

50/50 WINNER:Today’swinner of the bonus prize pack–a TBSO CD, $10 Food forthe Soul TBSO coupon and booklet of new Rotary postage stampsand a jar of Clint’s home-made raspberry jelly and a TBSO CD–alldonated by Clint was Garry Kushner.

The 50/50 winner was PDG Peter…and today is his birthday. Nice!

Rotary’s mission to eradicate polio is well known around the world andRamesh helped carry this message further and raised awarenessabout those who live with polio…as he hand-cycled across Canada.Ramesh shared Canada Day in Thunder Bay with all of us on hisamazing cross-Canada adventure. In April 2010 Ramesh releasedhis first book entitled “Better than a Cure, One Man’s Journey to Free the World of Polio”.
