Response to the brief

Instead of making negative posters such as:

We needed to make posters that promoted the British film and television industry in a positive way.

I decided to make posters showing great film and television moments, and explaining why they are worth paying for.

I liked the idea of making positive themed posters, as I do not want people to feel bad about downloading films illegally, I want them to feel good when paying to go to the cinema.

Research into past campaigns

A past campaign used for copyright was the “Piracy is a crime” advert, shown at cinemas and on DvD’s. This campaign was not very successful, as it was comparing downloading a film illegally, to stealing a car or someones purse.

Another copyright campaign were the “Knock-off Nigel” adverts. These were not very successful either as it was a bad song that got stuck in peoples heads and it was trying to make a happy song out of a serious crime.

A successful poster campaign was the Obama Hope, Change and Progress posters.

These posters are successful because they are very simple, and are showing that Obama brings hope to the USA, and will make a change. The palette used is mainly red white and blue, which are the colours of the american flag.

I think these posters are successful because they are positive, whereas if they said something bad about the others running for president, they would not have been successful.

This is why I prefer the idea of making positive posters.

Posters that gave me inspiration

I wanted to make a poster that showed great, memorable film and television moments that everyone would recognize.

I wanted to do this as people would like to reminisce on their favourite film moments, and it would make them happy, and they would know that it was worth paying for.

One poster that gave me inspiration was a minimalist poster for Jurassic Park:

I liked this poster because you have to work out for yourself how it relates to

Jurassic Park, and everyone will recognize what scene it is from. I decided to use this same technique for my posters, as people have to work it out for themselves, and I think it is a good way to show these memorable film and television moments.

Making final ideas

I started by making just the white shirt on a red background, but it was not subtle enough to be

a minimalist poster.

Shaun of the Dead poster

I tried cropping it to make the shirttake up the whole page, but this

did not work very well. So Idecided to start again.

Finalised poster

I started my Shaun of the Dead poster again, and used the whole page just for the shirt.

The minimalist poster used for Ghostbusters inspired me when

making this.
